I like where you are going with the gravel, I can't say your old gravel was one of my favorites. Now it looks like something to actually landscape with!
All your new stone is looking TREMUNFULOUS (it's MY word) my dear Glimm
I can see it's made you a little delirious and that little bit closer to the men in the white coats.......but oooooh so WORTH it. Well for us anways I'm sure rocking in the corner of a padded room thinking you have the power of Medusa and anything you look at is turning to STONE, might not be the fluffiest of scenarios if you had a choice! hehe
I also blame you sir that after looking at your stone and packed ice, i'm redoing stone for the 3rd time and bonkers amounts of it!! Although that blame IS turning to thanks as i'm rather chuffed how it's turning out
Always a pleasure never a chore to step into Glim's world......... although the "oh crap, I'm having urges to redraw stuff" moments really don't help my progression!
Keep it up!
Dammit.......CTM gravel, SEE you have done it again *trudges off, thinking of little small stones*
Depends on how complex people make the models and how common those models are in a world. The more detailed the model and the more common it is, the more impact it will have.
I guess that's what I kind of expected. Some things will be wonderful as special models, but if more common models like trees and plants were made more complex I imagine there would be problems, unless it was something as simple as the vanilla models. Hope I'm understanding that right.

No I wasn't a great fan of it either, to tell you the truth! One of those compromises squeezed in when trying to do too many other things at the same time. 64x really does give much more creative scope, especially coupled with repeat ctm, but it still feels like cheating! Lol!

.....GS v16 Early WIP Gravel 2!
A few more pics of the gravel might help to put it in context with the other stone textures. I'm beginning to think that it's the dirt that needs to change more than the gravel. Yes the gravel needs to darken slightly and have some evidence of dirt, but I'm not going to get it right until I settle on a new dirt texture...something I'm kind of hoping will 'cement' the whole...but don't worry I'm not going that far, yes new dirt, but not cement dirt!

Haha! I almost missed your comment seein' as you posted at the same time.
I'll have to hire that TREMUNFULOUS word. Sounds like it's a description for some kind of tree fungus!
The trouble is, I'll have to come and look at your new stone now, and then the whole crazy process of, "Oh! That looks way better...I never new it could look like that!" will begin over again. I'll just go and get my coat now should I? I think I'll book myself into the clinic, might just be easier!

Hey Glimmar, getting back to minecraft after being away for a while and your work is as good as ever.
Now I like the gravel a lot Glim, and as you say will be spot on for under rail track, but I also think it blends with the landscape like a charm, I also like to do the odd gravel path here and there, and I think it will be a welcome addition for that for me mate. On another note, please don't change the lava, it has to be the best lava going Glim
Haha! Good stuff! haven't had much chance to experiment further with it this weekend, I've been out walking and taking pics, but the weather hasn't been ideal for anything useful.
It's funny you should mention the lava, you must be a mind reader or something, as I've been thinking I'd like to experiment with a variation that has the black cooler lava crust shaded to a similar colour as the rest of the lava to see if I can smooth out the eye-poppin' patterning one gets at distance. I'm hoping it might make it a little more 'gloopy' looking, except I just need to find the original layered animations I made. Only if that turned out a roarin' success would I consider changing from the regular though, so no worries!

By the way are the Minecraft Forums using 'Cloudflare' now? For some reason this morning it's interfering with any searches I do through Google for the forums and sometimes when I'm posting...or has my computer been infected with something? What the heck is Cloudflare?

I've been noticing some 'Cloudflare' stuff as well, especially when initially accessing the forums. It pops up with a "verifying your computer" message and it waits about 5 seconds or so before letting me in. As near as I can tell, it seems to be an anti-DDoS system, trying to prevent hacked computers from sending thousands of simultaneous requests to the server which could make the server crash. Honestly, I'm not a big fan of what I've seen, and I am a bit wary of it, but if it's any consolation, your computer hasn't been hacked, it's happening to everyone (as near as I can tell).

Thanks for confirming that. Only noticed it today and Googling the name seems to suggest it's the website that implements it...and some people put up with it, but the majority from what I've read hate it. Does this mean the Forums have suddenly just started using it, and it's something we just have to get used to, or has it been around for a while and it's just detected something suspicious at my end? My virus protection hasn't picked anything up yet.
It's not long to wait for it to disappear, but like everything that spoils the normal flow of things, it's bloomin' annoying when you're note expecting it! I just got it again posting now, but I'm not getting it anywhere else I go, so I assume it is just a MC forum thing.

Yeah, I believe it's a fairly recent development, and it looks like it's server side, so you should only see it here on the MC forums. Bloody annoying if you ask me. If I had to guess, they probably implemented it after the server issues last week. They may have been hit by a DDoS attack and decided to start using this service to help alleviate it… but it'll likely only serve to annoy the users of the forum. Hopefully they'll remove it after not too long, especially if they hear enough complaints about it.
EDIT: Found this thread discussing it. Turns out it was in response to a DDoS attack from yesterday and part of today. They seem to believe that they've figured out the cause, stopped it, and have since turned off the Cloudflare verification.

Ah! Cool! If it's just a short term thing to protect the servers, then I have no qualms. I've not been aware of it today, so I guess it looks like it's been switched off. It really would have been annoying if it was a permanent defensive wall to keep climbing over every post!
So, I picked up buildcraft to check out some of MegistusEligius' texture work, fantastic work btw, and I've run into a problem. The quarry drill and the construction tape give a flashing red texture.

Anyone know what the issue is?
I hope Megistus or someone else can pick up on this for you asikar, because as you know by now, mods are not my thing...as much as I might wish otherwise.
Just one pic for now as this is very early work in process and I don't even know how this will turn out. At present it's the wrong color and the wrong scale, so there's lots of work to do, hence the dark twilit scene. I don't even know if I can blend this successfully with the grass edge yet and to be honest it's getting very frustrating trying to balance so many new textures...one thing impacts another, impacts another and the way this is going the whole lot is going to fall over and look ghastly...Gah!
I might just scrap it as dirt and use it as an adobe-like hardened clay variant...perhaps a new biome specific mesa hardened clay base, as a replacement for 'brick mesa land'! Difficult to decide anymore as I'm too tired to care at the moment.
Brick mesa land, an interesting idea Glim , the dirt, well as a keen user and fan of steampunk mate, I see it working, but I'm seeing it from the whole steampunk aesthetics and I feel it would work, and work well, I think it sits well with the other designs your working on.
Don't let a little thing like tiredness get in the way
Well 'Brick Mesa Land' already exists, as I didn't do anything to change the hardened stained clay 'brick' textures in the mesa biome. Looks quite spectacular, if not a little strange!
My reluctance to alter the brick textures using MCPatcher's biome specific textures function stems from the awkwardness that might arise if one was building with hardened stained clay bricks on the borders of a mesa - the building would be forced to be part brick and part mesa clay texture. I'm still considering what might be best to do about this for the future. Any thoughts anyone? A variant of my new dirt might work quite well as an alternative biome specific MCPatcher texture.
Eventually did some more work on the dirt texture (quite a lot actually), and I'm pleased to say I'm a lot happier with it, but trying to balance it's colour between so many different wildly colored biomes, but specifically the podzal environ is still giving me a headache. I'm just working on the random grass edges now and I'll probably have to completely redo/edit the podzal texture to get a better match when it butts up against bare dirt.
In my frustration I went off and did some work in the garden to relax - another favorite work hobby of mine - it seemed appropriate somehow...work IRL dirt and then texture the stuff in MC in the evening!
"From the off look this truly amazing pack pulls me in to witness the pure beauty in terms of steam punk and minecraft mixed together, it brings all that I know and love about the unique graphics of steam punk and releases it into the raw world that minecraft can sometimes be! Although this may not be your usual, bog standard, custom texture pack, it is for sure, one for the adventurous."
Congrats you earned number one texture pack of 2014 on our website!
That's amazing! Well I would never have thought that possible, but it's nice to see it...even if it turns out to be a mistake! Very nice website by the way.
Many thanks indeed, and as soon as I get a chance to face editing my OP again, I'd like to put a link to the article up there somewhere, thanks again! It's typical that I should get such a moral boost after storming off in frustration and thus not see it for a couple of days! However it was nice to come back to.
Ah...sorry Rosestorm, in it's present state I wouldn't be happy in putting an update out. Everything is currently in a state of change while I balance how all these new landscape textures interact with each other. Hopefully it will be worth the wait though.
Here are more pics to either frustrate or pique your interest. Sorry to keep you waiting, but I'm trying to take some advantage of this extended period inbetween MC updates.
.....GS v16 New Dirt WIP part 2!
3 more pics to give an idea of the current state of my new dirt. It's lumpier, darker and has more stone in it to make it sit better next to gravel and stone.
As mentioned, all this new editing has had serious consequences for all natural textures, sand, podzal, ploughed dirt, etc., all will need a little or a lot of work to play nicely with each other.
I must say I am quite pleased with how the dirt looks underground and under water, if I can manage to balance it's interaction with all the other textures, it will have been worth the long hours spent on it.
Have you decided what the default setup for the girders and airbags are going to be in the next update? I think you mentioned having the bags be for the slime block and have the girders be for one of the stained glass blocks.
Have you decided what the default setup for the girders and airbags are going to be in the next update? I think you mentioned having the bags be for the slime block and have the girders be for one of the stained glass blocks.
Yep...slime blocks will be the airbag texture and the silver stained glass will be the scaffold girder. There are more pics a few pages back but here's one of the pics again as proof that both textures are in the pack together:
As it's designed symmetrically, the new girder also works extremely well as a glass-less window or alternative decorative iron bars, fence, etc., The silver stained glass, as it was as factory glass bricks, was my least favorite. Of course it will still be available in the next Alternative Glimmar Textures download.
This was a tricky stage for sure, but I'm happy how things have turned out, as I have a system for randomising the grass side that still allows for smooth biome colour transition. At this stage the differences are nice and subtle while still being very random (14 dirt types and 12 grass edges types combine together to make...well I'll let you do the multiplication), but the way I have things set up I can add much rarer and more distinctive elements. Just thought it was worth showing you where I'm at. Still got the ploughed dirt types and snow grass sides to do. Phew! I forgot when I set out to redo dirt that it wasn't just a top and side texture!
More pics if you click the 'spoiler'.
If I don't have time before MC updates, it will still be necessary to update sand and clay to better blend with stone, dirt and gravel, but as I've also got plans for the sandstone textures, things should eventually look a lot better.
Podzal is still the least successful area for the new dirt to shine, but I'm looking to test and see if I can subtly influence the look of things using biome coloring.
