This pack looks so awesome I think I just revisited puberty. Srsly its practically orgasmic, but enough of this. Can you post the textures for the torch? and yes crystall would look cool, maybe diamond blocks could be see-through clusters which take up 1x1 (might be hard). Could you PLEASE paste a "expected release date"? or at least follow up on that request to type up a to-list. I'd be happy to help with the cobblestone texture if that would speed things up.
Apart from that, takes these as commission: and to help your morale.
Sorry to shamelessly double post again, but I don't think this'll fit in my orginal post.
Important: I'm still currently using some of Doku's esteemed RPG pack for textures I've not yet converted, Mixcraft's GUI and JohnSmith's excellent Mobs. So if they pop up in the background while I show you taster pics of my own textures, please note I'm not trying to claim them as my own. I give them credit because they are the textures that inspire me! I mixed and matched all the time in the past, so if you see someone else's stuff please let me know and I'll give them due credit here during my WIP stage.
Some more pics and thoughts.
First of all, many thanks to all for your very positive comments. It sounds like there is a goodly interest in the theme and that's sufficient encouragement for me to carry on. I apologise for any disappointment caused to those who checked this thread out, only to discover there's nothing to download yet. I don't have a lot of spare time, but any I do have will be used to finish this off. I'm just as keen to try and get something I can use in my worlds too, but I needed to know I wouldn't be wasting a great chunk of my time!
This is an exciting time with the big announcement from Notch about the Halloween Update and I'm wondering how this and subsequent updates, now he's got a crew behind him, will effect textures and mods. I know I'm looking forward to lanterns and wondering how I might fit them into my Steampunk theme! So many good things happening recently especially on the community modding front too. Don't forget to download and use the HD Texture Glitch modviewtopic.php?f=25&t=46173. As a result of this patch I won't be urgently working on a steampunk HD version of water and lava. I love the animated version too much! (edit) have just installed the latest version of this mod and now it is possible to have moving water so some time I will have a go on something a bit steampunky. For now Doku's lava looks lovely animated, and I've turned his water a green hue so it now looks a lovely polluted Victorian pea soup! Not sure it works but it's good fun trying!! :smile.gif:
One of my main reasons for starting out with this pack initially, was to try and make as many of the textures serve multiple roles in my own architectural creations, as for now, the range of blocks we have to build with is necessarily limited.
So for me, things like dirt are not only 'dirt', but also a 'red sandstone' and sand could also be 'a yellow sandstone'. Clay can be made into bricks (especially now with the HD fix), but also reforming the clay lumps back into blocks and you've got another building material, seen here in the foreground (haven't done red bricks yet).....
…...which for the Steampunk theme I've worked into a kind of 'blue marble' or 'exotic metal panelling', still works, imho, in the world as a kind of blue clay too, adding to a greater range of materials to work with. However, I'm still struggling to get that perfect balance. Just don't expect them to be really exciting textures like Doku's, John Smith's, or Eld's.
That includes the ore blocks – I wish we could still use the basic coal, diamond and redstone ores as building blocks. Nice decorative building material too, and still there to use when needed! However, all these blocks still have to serve their role as basic landscape elements too, just less busy and more muted. I don't mean to spoil the look of your virgin worlds, but I am trying to make my own epic builds have more to work with. It's selfish, but it's what's driving me with this texture set.
Sorry about the pic, but the ores glitter much more than they appear to here. The Diamond ore block has other precious stones scattered around on it's surface, so that when I come to design the Diamond and Gold 'storage' blocks I can employ some nice jewel like designs. I wish we could find all sorts of precious stones (as items) down in the mines, that we could later stick around our walls for decoration, but I understand the limitations.
This has been my reasoning behind the other building blocks like glass. I know a lot of people don't like the glass to be too busy with decoration, but Doku's glass set me thinking what an amazing opportunity here for building cast iron bridge supports and scaffolding, supporting other marvellous fantastical structures. Glass is the only 'building block' we can see through at the moment and it would be a real shame if it wasn't possible to exploit it's dual capabilities for creativity.
And so on, to things like the forge, craft bench and iron, gold and diamond, the 'multi-faceted blocks', great for increasing the variety of our designs from diferent angles. I'm happy with the iron block as it stands as a steampunk gizmo, but there's so many other things we could do with it. Here's my own steampunk 'sky ship' design docked at my Grand Railway Terminus...yet another WIP, my initial inspiration for starting the steampunk theme.
Just a few more things I've been working on: refined the torch, reworked the glass to look like wrought ironwork, lever, brass ladder, signpost (which I'm still thinking of changing to a wrought iron work black edge), lit furnace....
….and obsidian, adminium(?), and mossy cobblestone.
I'm trying to decide which way to take the gold block as I'm not happy with my early experiment...more gadgety, structural or decorative, but no question...I'm going to try and use all three of it's sides and similarly with diamond. I'm leaning towards gold being inlaid into a more refined polished stone block along with precious stones for glitter and opulence – it might also be possible to make them look slightly 'gadgety' too, like a primitive circuit board thingy.
Ideally, what I would really like Notch to do, or some clever community modder, is to create a limited palette of say 10 'editable' 32x32 pix png transfers that we can all use to stick on any solid block side. Even better, if it was possible to edit them 'in-game', say on the craft table. Imagine the infinite design possibilities this would provide! Obviously, blocks decorated with multiple sexual body parts would flood Minecraft, but I could put up with that if I could decorate my different world temples and fortresses with aztec, egyptian and celtic designs...to name just a few. Just day dreaming...... Please, someone do this if it's at all feasible!
dorianGREY asked me to provide a list of those things still to do, so that you might possibly provide me with some inspiration, suggestions, pics, ideas, etc. Here's my hastily put together list in no particular order:
Gold – already got ideas on this (see above) but always open to suggestion. Diamond – something gadgety and mysterious with pipes, etc. Kind of like some primitive crystal/plasma thingy-me-bob. Remember all 3 sides to be different. Jukebox – Lots can be done with this, but I haven't started even thinking yet! 3 sides Chests - Currently working on this in a teak wood base colour and black ironwork, but there might be scope for adding something a bit more steampunkish. Lock-wise? Mob Spawner - Haven't a clue, other than cagey. Or does it? Mmmm? Track - Not sure how this could go other than 'tracklike'. Certainly dark wood, possible leaning towards an oily tar finish on the sleepers? Mushrooms - Have lots of pics already and will try to do something mysterious, but along with the other growing things, I don't really want to add any Steampunk paraphenalia or it might look a bit silly, unless someone had an amazingly brilliant idea! I think the essence of the genre is that it looks wonderfully believable, even though it's also far-fetched. I'm thinking of making one of the two plants a hedge for formal decoration and the other a rosebush. Redstone Wire and Torches - I have some ideas about this, involving wire and illuminated valves, but I don't know how 3-dimensional I'd be able to get the valves to look. I know redstone wire has a practical use, but it's also a wonderful material for making illuminated displays, etc. The redstone torches will still have to be reddish in essence, but with a hint of amber perhaps, like old radio valves! Any thoughts? Brick - Typical dark red Victorian brick, slightly damp ...possibly mossy and crumbly, but nicely textured. Doesn't necessarily need to be red, but does need to be just right for this theme, as like the cobblestone, it could add a great deal to the atmosphere if got right, and look silly if not. Don't know whether to use a glossy 'Accrington' type of brick (like my house has. lol!) or the matt finished 'biscuit' fired kind of brick. I wish there was some spare block I could use for making shiny Victorian tiles!
Well I'm sure that's enough for now, get your gas-powered, valve-topped, brass thinking caps on, if you have a moment to spare, and see what inspiration can be generated. :biggrin.gif:
Soooo.. looking forward to Notch's lanterns, they are just perfect for this theme!
You should make art pack that includes concept art from steampunk styled media to go along with the pack. Things like this:
That sounds good! Also technical looking blueprints of fantastical machinery, and as was suggested 'symbols', so that some of the paintings can be used as decorative items on banners, sides of ships, above entrances, patterns, etc. Still wish we had more painting bases in the png file. Still trying to concentrate on the terrain.png at the mo., but really appreciate any suggestions from you folks.
No problem. Since the textures are a steam punk world, having real portraits kind of brings it back to reality. So the idea of making an art pack came to mind.
I <3 you.
So that gearbox is the iron block?
This is amazing, are the green torches regular torches or redstone?
Green torches are converted from the regular ones. One of those on the spare of the moment experiments, which just seemed to work...there's no-one more surprised than me. Still thinking about what to do for the redstone side of things. I think it's got to be reddish, but perhaps with a hint of an amber glow, if that's possible, then they look like old valves overheating or something. Funny how there are certain colours that just jump out as being Steampunk!
Thanks, Chris The Mushroom.

Thanks, doolahan!
When I have time again, I really want to have a go at making something like the Nautilus, along with an under-water base with airlocks, using the iron doors, etc. All those things were in the back of my mind when I started this texture set. I'm sure many others will have more original ideas though.
Great update! I'll do my best to give ideas and suggestions for the list you gave.

Gold – already got ideas on this (see above) but always open to suggestion.
I liked the gold block you posted earlier (the statue), but I can see how you might want to expand its' use. Perhaps a few gears might be interesting, but the golden bust looks good when you're trying to show off.

Diamond – something gadgety and mysterious with pipes, etc. Kind of like some primitive crystal/plasma thingy-me-bob. Remember all 3 sides to be different.
I agree completely. Maybe something close to Dinotopia's use of Sunstones, where a large crystal is inlaid into a mess of wire and brass fittings, as if it's drawing energy from the crystal.

Jukebox – Lots can be done with this, but I haven't started even thinking yet! 3 sides
You definitely need to put a classic gramaphone horn(?) on one of the sides. And maybe instead of records, you could have wax rolls =p

No need to be too complicated, a classic steamer truck.

Hmm... Perhaps something crystalline or glassy if you're trying to keep away from cages.

Maybe you could make it into actual pipes... Replace the redstone puffs when it's on from red to white and it becomes steam! That actually sounds like an excellent idea!
Triskelli,
thanks again. You have some cool ideas there and not too outlandish either. Especially like the idea of a third rail for the track, perhaps even like a chain, ala rollercoaster, but love the pic you supplied.
Not sure how 3d I could get the gramaphone horn on a flat side, but certainly the wax roll would be cool embeded on one side.
I'd also been thinking along the lines of a steamer trunk too, so downloaded every image I could from Google, but would still like to add something special without cluttering it too much. Also, as with everything else, I want to try and make it so that it merges well with other things placed alongside. More possibilities for everyone to design there dreams.
Love the idea for the redstone wires being pipes and the puffs of redstone dust being steam, I will look into that, but am stilled tempted by something valve-like (which is perhaps not true steam punk). This all needs some experimentation to see what happens when the colours are changed radically. I think I got lucky with the green of the torches and I don't know what will happen with the muted glow from the redstone torch.
'Genius' idea for the mushrooms, if it is possible, one of them would look amazing if it appeared to glow (similar to the mushrooms in 'Oblivion'), but not sure if that would be possible. Perhaps just the right choice of lambent pale green or blue might have the desired effect and long and stringy. Mmm, Got me thinking already!
Awesome parting pic from Wiki. If only we could have an engine like that to chug around a Steampunk Minecraft! I think I need to go back to the drawing board on the minecart. It's frustrating, I'd like to add more in the way of pipes and things to the minecart but have to remember that it's primary use is as a simple cart, not a steam engine. If only more of the furnace was visible above the cart, it would look more steam engine like. Oh well! I'm sure Notch...and the modders... will give us lots more to play around with in the course of time.
Thanks again for all those ideas.
Froman,
many thanks for reminding me about deviantArt. I have an account there myself, but haven't been frequenting it of late. Minecraft has a lot to answer for!
Tiger4Ruler,
thanks for the painting png. You've got the ball rolling there. Love the blueprint pic! This is going to be the most difficult thing to do I think, as so much is down to personal taste. I personally prefer less overt representation of Steampunk images and more classical images (Leonardo, etc., symbols, blueprints and so on). Everyone feel free to add their own Steampunk 'galleries' though and show them here, and then everyone can make their own choices and those who feel able can chop and change. I will make my own gallery in the end, which probably won't please everyone. Just remember to scale for the 32x32 texture size (I know we can go to bigger textures now, but I think 32x32 is probably going to be one of the more popular sizes for some time to come as they are a nice compromise).
Well done indeed Glimmer!
You are truly revolutionizing the meaning of modding within Minecraft. I'm sure that by the time you release this texture pack, you'll have gained at least double the fanbase you already have.
Oh, and about redstone: Eh, electricity fits in with Tesla and Edison, who are Steampunk in their own right. My only concern for the dust is how it will tessellate with a valve pattern. Ooh! Maybe redstone torches could be vacuum tubes! That would both make sense in use, and be interesting to have as decoration.

Those pics are really cool. I haven't started looking at valves yet, but I'm drooling at the possibilites already and come to think of it, yes the grey mushrooms do glow don't they! I'm glad Notch did that. This just gets better and better possibilty-wise.
I'm looking forward to tinkering with the redstone dust and torches especially with these ideas. It's also got me thinking about the furnace again - to function both as a furnace and as some kind of primitive cathode ray tube monitor - perhaps for later variations. This just illustrates the fact that Minecraft in it's simplicity is open to infinite possibilities, with sufficient imagination! We already know that though, with all those amazing architectural feats of brilliance we see on the Survival forum.
Can't wait for him to implement alchemy! Whole new kettle of fish range of possibilties there!
Quick request - could you start saving your screencaps as .png, rather than .jpg? You're getting a lot of compression artifacts that are really taking away from the images.
WWOOOOOOOOWW!
The things your building look absolutely amazing with that pack.. Man :biggrin.gif:
I really can't wait till this comes out. The art pack looks fantastic! I like Steam punk but I was never a huge fan, so I'm afraid I don't think I'll be able to help you as I don't really know the history or anything :[ but judging by how many suggestions your getting, looks like I won't need too and it's coming along amazingly! :biggrin.gif:
I really wish I could get my hands on your terrain.png file!
***** That iron gear box is pure win!!!! ****
My next favorites are your doors, craftbox, wood, torches and raw diamonds. Really really nice work. I don't say that a lot, the only other pack I really like is the Doku set. (Which I'm currently using modded with my own glass & flowers). Btw I like big cobble and where you ended with yours.
So puh-leaze release soon so I can enjoy your gadgety goodness! You can always release newer versions so don't worry that it has to be perfect the first time.
So that gearbox is the iron block?

I personally prefer less overt representation of Steampunk images and more classical images (Leonardo, etc., symbols, blueprints and so on). Everyone feel free to add their own Steampunk 'galleries' though and show them here, and then everyone can make their own choices and those who feel able can chop and change. I will make my own gallery in the end, which probably won't please everyone. Just remember to scale for the 32x32 texture size (I know we can go to bigger textures now, but I think 32x32 is probably going to be one of the more popular sizes for some time to come as they are a nice compromise).
You are truly revolutionizing the meaning of modding within Minecraft. I'm sure that by the time you release this texture pack, you'll have gained at least double the fanbase you already have.
If I'm not mistaken, brown mushrooms already glow very dimly, enough so they can be seen in pitch darkness.

I currently have a Let's Play and time lapse series.
Steampunk Pack - Steampunk textures.
Frenden's Texture Pack - Nice simple 16x16 texture pack.
Alchemy - *drool* Yesss...
