Ah! I greatly appreciate that, mate, and thanks for lookin' in!
I'm sure you know what it's like to work in a bit of a vacuum, with very little free time to finish things, with RL distractions coming from all angles. So it's very encouraging to know what little I've done looks good to a fellow artist.
Here's all I've got to show for today's free time foray into the new textures, yet it does represent quite a bit of work. It's all the fault of 'random ctm'!
.....GS v14 New Dark Oak Planks!
...except, as is typical for me, being the contrary type...they're not dark, but 'weathered' and 'bleached' oak beams:
They look strong and load bearing, so anything you make with them should feel like it'll last...so just let those zombies try beating these down!
Not sure how practical they will prove to be, as I haven't had chance to build anything major other than the little trials in the pics. Once I got started on the idea, then made numerous random ctm variations, it doesn't leave much time for anything else.
Don't forget these are all hand drawn too, like the Dark Oak log above, not copy pasted textures and it takes a lot of trial and error work to get things to look right. Without ctm I'd probably have got through most of the new textures by now (if Halloween and school hols hadn't intervened), but I want things to look right first time, if possible, and I'm no Youtube speed artist...sorry!
When I've more time to return and re-edit things (like that ever happens!) it should be fairly easy to make a number of color variations for those who like their dark oak to look, well...dark! Other richer oak color variations could be made too! With my dark tarred iron bound spruce planks I didn't want to make another dark colored plank. I thought about sort of swapping things around between spruce and dark oak planks, but the havoc that might have caused both to my world and everyone else's dissuaded me. I've already had to swap a number of things around to fix the the extra ctm block problem, so I didn't want to create any more havoc than absolutely necessary.
Hi glimmar, I was wondering if you know if it is possible to do CTM on blocks from mods? And if so, can it be done the regular way, or does the mod need a CTM folder in it? Since mods for 1.7 cant be updated yet, I thought I would mess around with CTM stuff while I wait, and thought I should ask if this was possible before I go through the trouble of making the textures.
THanks!
I almost want to see the Oak and Dark (Old) Oak swapped - that texture would look wonderful as the supporting members in the mines....
The Auld Grump
I know exactly what you mean and all this woody business is proving a real headache. It's a great juggling act really...should this log be darker, should this plank be horizontal, etc? I'll have to move on though and come back to the spruce plank, which I think could benefit from being a little chunkier to make it almost a slightly darker vertical iron-bound version of the Dark Oak plank.
What annoys me at the moment, is if it's possible to make the logs vertical or horizontal, why can't the plank blocks behave the same way? The steps have been made very versatile, why not the blocks. Then it wouldn't be necessary too have to make a fixed choice for the resource pack.
The current problem i'm having is converting and updating mod textures to the new 64x format. I'd really rather not just resize the 32x to 64x and have it look the same while the main pack has the odd semi-realistic 64x. Though i'll have to do that with most at this point, since they were made from pulled-apart 32x alternate textures that you had in spades.
I understand the frustration, Vermillion, and it's not as if I can promise you my updating will be quick, as the new textures are always my priority. The trouble is RL is also very busy for me.
Not to much left to go, mostly just working on the walls, filling the harbor with boats and blending the industrial area to the markets.
It's getting quite massive now.
I hope you'll just keep adding to the world though...a large city, roads off in all directions, building things along the road and letting the landscape and your imagination dictate what pops up. Surely I can't be the only one who just wants to keep on expanding ever outwards?

As far as I know I think it is, though I haven't ctm'd any mods myself. I've seen enough comments and queries in the MCPatcher thread to know that others have used ctm with mods. To be on the safe side you'd need to check for sure on kahr's thread, before committing yourself to a large amount of work.
MCPatcher for 1.6 is stable, but the beta versions for 1.7.3 are a bit buggy at the moment...so bear that in mind. Just do a little experiment in 1.6 first to be sure it's worth proceeding.

Oh, great idea! I didnt even think of that. Thanks!
Those weathered planks look really cool Glimmar, keep up the good work!
Edit: Oh hey look, page 571, this thread is huuuggee.
Glad you like 'em and thanks for saying.
Phew! 571 eh? ....I've got a lot to answer for!

Todays little bit of work on the update....
.....GS v14 Acacia Plank and New Saplings!
I'm prefering this version of Acacia Plank at the moment as it performs well at the edges for windows and the like, as a continuous wall, column, box, etc., and fits well with the other existing planks, coming out as a more bright 'Churchy' varnished oak, rather than the aged and dirty iron-bound Oak Plank. It's got to have a bit of weathering and random ctm work on it yet (knots, grain, nail holes, dents, etc). I'm also still not sure about the jungle wood plank though.
I finished up on the Acacia Sapling and 4 varieties of Dark Oak Sapling and decided to darken the Acacia Log as it was looking way to bright in the landscape and too similar in tone to Birch.
Just finished The Bowerstone Industrial area of Albion. visit my download page to check it out. im taking a break from this project untill Glimmars texure pack has updated, aswell as a mod i use, then ill be updating to 1.7 finally http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/fable-3-bowerstone-industrial/
I'm also still not sure about the jungle wood plank though.
I can only speak for myself, but I have a hard time knowing how to use jungle planks in my builds. I think it's those spaces in-between the slats. It doesn't seem to be right for roofing, though I have used it that way a little. I use it as decking around my lighthouse, and as crates around my dock, although the gold/brass looking rivets/nails lend a class that doesn't seem right for transporting common goods.
I kind of like what Vermillion did with a couple of his Forestry mod support planks. A couple he made look like shingles. That may be a little too limiting, though as you could only use them as roofing. (EDIT: with so many planks to work with in Forestry it wasn't a a big problem) I can see the dark oak also being used like wooden siding and decking as well as support beams, the versatility is great. Just some thoughts, take 'em or leave 'em.
EDIT: I like the cross-band on the acacia planks, but when seeing it next to the oak planks, I'm not sure what to think about the difference in width with the iron bands. Would it be better to have thicker iron banding on the oak? Thinner banding on the Acacia? Leave them be?
I also kind of miss the old spruce panels. Though I have adapted to using the spruce as vertical supports, the polished panels gave a nice feeling of class. Again, just some thoughts.

i have the exact same problem, i can never find a good use for the Jungle wood, which is a shame cus i like the colour but it dosnt go with much as well as the slats to blend well, i do use the jungle wood stairs as outdoor seats/benches. but thats all.

We have some warehouse buildings like that near by where I live and those little tug boats look awesome. I'll have to have a closer look at those when I get chance. Good stuff!
I made some nice plaster textures by accident, Glim. Can I interest you in them, at least as alternates?
Alternative textures of all kinds are most welcome. After I finally manage to get this update on the road, I'll be updating the 'alts collection' download and as you probably know, there's a section there for user alts.
A couple of those stained clay blocks will be different for the update. I've wanted to make one of them into weathered plaster for some time now...1.7 put paid to that though.

Definitely need to do something about making the jungle wood a bit more useful, but as you say the shingles might be a little limiting...as an alt perhaps, but that might have to wait 'till after the update now.
The width of the acacia edge bands being different to the oak iron bands doesn't worry me too much as I think it's good to have them different for contrast. By the time I've finished the acacia it won't look like a lighter copy of the oak, it'll have more acacia-like grain patterning. I'm intending to make the oak look a bit more weathered and knocked about, as an older version of the lighter acacia.
I think I mentioned I'll probably make the spruce a little lighter and more weathered, possibly even a little bleached, still vertical and possibly 2-plank along with the thicker black cast-iron bands, then it can be better used along with the Old/Dark Oak plank. Again, not sure if I should waste too much time doing this before updating, but that's the intention.

Yep! I sure do need to have some alts for this...which I have. The slatted variety is obviously great for boats, airships and gangways, etc. but limiting for other uses, although it makes a nice collector's cabinet too with the brass pins as handles!
I'll see about something a bit more traditional for it like I've done for the acacia.
If you see any pics online of anything that might be useful let me see.
Thanks...one and all for the input. If I go silent for a bit, it's because of work and concentrating my limited leisure time on the business of these textures. If I have anything to show, I'll throw up a pic or two to keep you posted.
I love that rich wood. Perfect for that luxurious feel inside the passenger area of a dirigible or the inside of a steam room for soaking the grime and grit out after a long day at the foundry.

Haha! Believe it or not, I must be dirigible/ship mad, because I always have that very same picture in the back of my mind (no not the steam room!), the part where this and that texture might look quite good as part of a ships cabin or a luxury passenger suite...that's what was running through my head as I was putting the little sample room together for the above pic.
The daft things is, I've still yet to make a worthwhile dirigible/airship!
Red Stained Clay + CTM versions (looks pretty fail though)
First time doing ctm. Didn't turn out too bad for a first attempt...
Very nice, mate!
Once you get started on ctm there will be no stopping, it's addictive, but time consuming! Gone are the days when all we needed to do was one clever tileable texture for every new block Mojang threw in the pot. Now to do an update justice, it's a case of having to craft hundreds of textures. Which is good for users...bad for my social life.
These will certainly go in the 'alts collection' download. In fact, already downloaded and placed in a folder named after your good self.
What I really aught to do, and I've been conscious of this for a while, is to have a more public credit list in my OP for all those who have contributed to the user section of the alts collection. I've added this to my todo list.

I get more than carried away making new textures 64x out of what you've done so far. I won't have time for CTM, though I did want to animate the IC3's Macerator top and front. But I have no idea how to do that as the texture file for the Macerator is 1 image as opposed to one for each side. Here's the old 32x one done by... someone. I think I fixed a bug with it somewhere along the line, back in the old days. I also noticed that it seems to use the same bottom side as the top, which is just weird. You'd put ore in the top, it'd bounce around and fall straight out the bottom. And here's the new 64x one I just finished-ish. The main problem here is ornamenting the sides and back with the same pistons and gears and whatnot that the old ones had, but better. All I had at my disposal for these is the Furnace_Top, Noteblock and one of the dropper/dispensers. I only hope i've got them in the right order and I don't end up with the bottom on the side or something.Opinions?Oh btw Glim. It seems that with 1.7, you can add soundpacks to texture packs. Are you gonna add the ones from your videos into the pack or since you can run multiple texture packs (somehow), keep it as a seperate pack under the guise of a texture pack? Could call it Glimmar's SteamFunk or something witty like that.
EDIT: Here's the IC3 Iron Furnace as well. Like the Macerator, the sides are plain until I have more materials to work with.EDIT 2: Might as well throw them all down here for everyone to see.
Electric FurnaceExtractorCompressorMetal FormerMagnetizer (The second-most useless machine in IC1, 2 and 3.)
I must say, I enjoy working on Steampunk textures far more than I do on JohnSmith ones. They're kinda generic and boring.
I love them!
