I have asikar to thank for pointing me in the direction of this most excellent rendering tool. It's been like discovering the wonder of Minecraft all over again!
I can confirm that Chunky works very well for me for both MC 1.6.2 and 64-bit Java. It hasn't crashed once, even though I was hopping in and out of Gimp, Chrome, etc. It's relatively easy to set up a good scene, see what the lighting (and shadow) will look like, change the position of the sun, sky and many other things, before committing to a render.
Here's a few early experimental pics using 'Chunky' around my world build of 'Newglim':
Click spoiler for more:
As the Chunky wiki mentions, it won't render entities and paintings, etc. CTM and other MCPatcher effects are obviously sadly missing too, as Chunky doesn't support mod textures. There are some other little glitches that are as much to do with the non-standard way in which I treat textures, but the end result of rendering a favorite build vastly makes up for any shortcomings. Can't enthuse about this enough! Thanks again to it's creator, nrub.
Very nice work there, Droideka. Looking forward to seeing it expand into an even more epic build.
I've been taking a little breather from mossy cobble and messing around with a wonderful MC mapping and rendering mod called 'Chunky', http://www.minecraft...endering-tool/.

Can't say when I'll be able to do it, but I'll add that to my voluminous task list.
Glimmar, how did you get the water to look like that? Is that something you did with the pack or is it an outside mod?
I saw asikar was using something to display his airships off beautifully and he gave me the link. It's been around almost the same time as my pack...just short of 3 years and I never new it existed. It's very easy to use too.
It doesn't look like this when you're in the game, though. You load your latest world into Chunky and a little like mcedit it allows you to move around and choose a nice scene, and manipulate the sky background, lighting with complex shadows and reflection, the position of the sun, and much more and then when you're happy, render it off as a finished .png pic at your chosen size. Obviously the bigger and more complex the scene (with multiple light sources) the more it will slow the final render down. The scenes above took my mid-range comp about 1 hour to render.
Have fun, and if you get something nice out of it, be sure to show us.
NewGlim looks amazing in the renders. Not that it didn't already. ;P
Haha! Thanks, mate.
If it wasn't for the distraction of Total War Rome 2, I'd be able to render some more. Being able to see your builds in such fine detail and in a range of lighting conditions is a tremendous incentive to creative building...not that I need any incentive to build! Chunky is a great toy and I'm glad you discovered it. I'm now really looking forward to seeing how some other areas of Newglim might appear, even scenes involving minor constructions should take on a whole knew significance. However, I now have quite a few builds that are heavily reliant on ctm, so I'd have to replace vast swathes of blocks.
Sadly, the only thing I regret is this inability to use ctm textures, therefore Chunky is also pushing me to make a kind of Chunky dedicated version of the pack. I definitely need to have another look at the basic MC textures...using ctm can make one a little lazy with regard to good tiling.
Haha! 'Portable and Spatially Compact Inventory Box of Relative Dimension', kind of like a portable TARDIS, hence the re-hash of some of the words/concepts. Here's the video I made that defined it...just skip to 2:42. Oh flip! I just noticed my typo on 'Spatially' [hangs head in shame] Something I probably intended to spell check at the time and in the rush forgot.
I have started using a bit of a combination of different resource packs for my own use. I was wondering what files I would have to copy over to get the current skybox that is in this pack. I haven't any sky that I think is better that yours.

It's very simple, especially if you also want the night time star field.
Open up the resource pack/assets/minecraft/mcpatcher/ and the folder you want to have in your personal pack is called 'sky'. Copy or move the entire 'sky' folder into the 'mcpatcher' folder in your combo resource pack, but make sure there isn't already a sky box there. If there is, remove it and replace it with mine. Everything you need for the daytime sky and nighttime sky, and the .properties that instruct them when to appear and how to behave, is in there.
Of course you need to have MCPatcher installed with the 'better skies' option selected.
If you subsequently show off any pics of your builds anywhere else using your personal mix, including my skies, etc, please give appropriate credit, just so there's no confusion over provenance (ownership), which I'm sure you would have already given. Obviously I don't give permission for any of my textures to be redistrubuted in another pack, but as long as I'm credited, showing off screenshots of builds using a personal pack is ok.
Been a while, but that new cobble is amazing Glimmar, glad to see your back in action Think I may have to get back into texturing at this rate
Hiya, Jester. Glad you like it.
It's turned out to be a lot more work than I thought it would be (and I knew it would be a challenge), all because I've had to re-edit everything related to it, ie stone, just so that tonally everything hangs together better.
Since having a first look at the new 1.7 snapshot (which, I must say, I really like) I'm now having to re-work my new ctm'd mossy cobble to look it's best as 'mossy boulders'. My mossy cobble doesn't lend itself too well to the spherical boulder shape, due to the square-cut shape of the individual cobbles (I think I'd have preferred ruined cottages/cabins, etc), but I've only been able to view them without ctm at this stage.
Now I'm just acquiring inspiration for all the new plants, which is a favourite thing of mine to play around with and will nicely tie in with my new ctm'd reeds and vine. I still haven't been able to find any mesa biomes to check what my brick/marble styled hardened clay looks like, but I think Mojang have excelled themselves this time with all the new biomes.
The best things so far though are the new acacia trees, which use a combination of the jungle log and oak leaves and somehow that combination, along with the new twisted trunk shape, just works for me, looking fantastically atmospheric from a distance.
I'm glad to see you back in action too and hope college work is going well!
Just updated the OP with new pics and also re-jigged a few things. I needed to clear stuff up there in readiness for concentrated efforts on the new update.
@ Squid_Emperor: with your permission I've included a link to your thread in my Download section. This is regarding 16x Steampunk resource pack provision, which I don't have. This is following up, rather belatedly, on my offer of a link to your 'Steamy' pack as a most excellent alternative for those who can only play at 16x. I hope this is ok
@ The_Claw95: with your permission I've added your excellent 'Minecraft Bioshock City of Rapture' video to my 'Feature Showcase' section in the OP.
@ Phillipzu: I've at long last added your 'Minecraft Pocket Edition' of Glimmar's Steampunk to my 'Downloads' section. You waited long and with great patience, so many thanks.

It is more than ok! I am honoured
Once I get Steamy all up and ready I'll make a thread just for it, which'll make it easier to link to...
Thanks again!!

Haha, no probs. Steamy is, and will be, a great pack and the honour is mine. Hope it doesn't put you under too much pressure or anything.
Sorry it took so long to get round to it, re-editing my OP is one of my least favorite tasks. Judging by the chaos up there you can probably tell.
Do you know yet when your next update will be and what will be in it?
Well, it's very quiet around here at the moment...so thanks for asking.
Still undecided whether or not to update before 1.7 is released now, especially as I'm consumed by work in RL and the new MC 1.7 textures. They rather neatly follow on from what I was already working on, ie some of the plants and cobble. At the least I'll try and upload some pics in the meantime.
Also check me out on:
