-snip-
I glanced at the rumors of what's in 1.7, including the 'disco mountains'! Disco mountains might well be a problem and it might be necessary to change the texture slightly on certain hardened clay colors if they're not going to look completely ridiculous. Or I could just not worry about it at all and see what vast layers of bricks on a mountainside look like...might look like the foundations of a lost civilization, an abandoned factory complex to raid for supplies, or a mess! Marble-like versions of my hardened clays should look ok. The only ones that would give cause for concern would be the purple mosaic, carved stones and the marble frieze textures...they'd look a little outlandish...and I've been doing a lot of building with those. Curse you Mojang! [shakes fist]
-snip-
I've been having this exact issue with my clay for my modern pack, it's coloured concrete. It seems Mojang knows exactly what to do to ruin old textures
I think brick mountains might look awesome, like a crumbling ancient egyptian mastaba, or other mysterious ruins. But like you said it might also look silly with a brightly coloured mountain of bricks
The rest of the updates look like they won't be too hard on you. They're adding a bunch of new flowers; tulips (in lots of colours), sunflowers, 'lavender' and paeonia, and fixing up some old biomes and adding some new ones. One of the new ones is the "redwood forest' which has huge sprucewood trees, dirt that doesnt grow grass, a new form of grass called, podzol, and natural mossy cobble boulders.
Here's Jeb's screenshot.
I think the only major thing in this is the natural mossy cobble. Maybe you'll have to make the cobble appear more natural, or mabey ancient moss covered ruins can exist in your forests (I prefer that option )
Good too see you again, and good luck with whatever you decide to tackle first!
My suggestion for things like the colored clay and all those wonderful alt textures you have but are afraid to add lest it mess up someone's build is to take advantage of the multiple resource pack feature they are adding.
Basically, you would have your base pack with all the 'plain' textures and then various alt-packs that only have specific things in them like say the fancier clays.

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
Welcome back! I hope you had (and continue to have!) a great break

Hiya, Squid.
Yes it's been a good break, but I feel slightly left behind by life in general, so lots of catching up to do. If I'd been any longer away, I might have completely turned into a real castaway character...the temptation to go truly Minecraft in real life is very hard to resist.
I didn't know about tulips, lavender and paeonia. I wonder what uses these will be put to? I sneakily relaxed on the 'Magic Farm' version of FTB and thoroughly enjoyed being away from texture pack work (hehe). Alsorts of useful plants for eating there, but what's the info on the Mojang plants. Always welcome though, even if they're only for show, ctm'ing 'em should be fun too.
Yes, it would have been nice to know what Mojang were going to do with the clays when having to think what use to put them to in the pack, but they probably didn't know either at the time. Lol!
I was working on updating my cobble and it's going very well - meaning it looks ok to me and the process hasn't been too frustrating - except to make it fit better with stone, I've had to change the tone of every single stone texture I have...but I think it was worth the effort. That humble cobble is so incredibly important. Somewhere down the line I'm changing the stone and all the ores! I must be truly mad!! In any event I should just about be finishing off my new mossy cobble when the mossy cobble boulder comes along...one more bit of moss shouldn't bother me too much...I hope!

Hiya, mate.
It all sounds very complicated to me, and I haven't even got round to experimenting with sounds yet.
For some reason though last week, after weeks using my old laptop I suppose, I decided to start putting together a version of my Hybrid pack, minus all animations apart from lava, and water etc. but still retaining the CTM. This is my first attempt to work towards making the Hybrid pack available to a few more users, whilst remembering at some stage I really do need to back track to 32x scale. Perhaps I should look into making the Hybrid pack even more basic. However, I'm having great difficulty adapting to the new layout as it is, let alone understanding what this multiple resource pack feature is you speak of. I'm having to make baby steps again and narrow my focus. Slow and steady for this old codger.
The multiple resource pack feature was just announced a couple days ago for 1.7, so you'll have some time before that crops up. Basically, what you can do is select what resource packs you want enabled and rank them in order of priority. Therefore, if you have a pack that's partly completed but missing something (say, mobs), you can put that as highest priority. Then, you can place something that has mobs that you like second, and it'll fill in the gaps from the first pack with those resources in the second. Makes it a lot easier to fill in missing textures without having to resort to Vanilla or manually mixing and matching.
EDIT: On a side note, I finally got around to playing Minecraft again, picked up the latest version of the texture pack, and I love how everything turned out.

Ah...thanks, sheep, glad you like, as mentioned above, I'm trying to fit in some updates to older key textures while there's a lull, but I have to balance things with all my RL commitments now. I tried playing other games to have a break, but nothing quite has the 'tinkering but epic' feel of Minecraft.
I just had a look at the news now and the new multiple resource pack system looks very clever (sorry, Fool I hadn't checked the news in a few days), but the question immediately springs to mind, how will this fit in with MCPatcher? Right...a visit to the halls of kahr I think (I'm still not getting all my email notifications through from my subs and actively seeking out shortcuts requires effort. ).
Thanks again for the heads-up.
I just skimmed through the comments here for the summer and saw yours regarding the pressure of work, etc. Don't feel obligated in any way with regard to updating the mod pack, mate. I'm finding everything is squeezed time-wise myself and you've done a great deal to support this pack over the years. However, I'd hate to think that anything to do with maintaining interest in the pack was cause for concern, so I'll leave that section as it is at the moment and if you want me to put a notice up there I'm happy to do that too. Blimey...the way Mojang are going, everything will just be a mass of textures anyway! Me? I'll just keep tinkering away and hope things settle down.
Sorry for clogging up your thread but if you're looking for other games to play for a bit I cannot recommend "Rise of Legends" enough. I'm sure you've seen heaps of it here, but it's what got me into steampunk in the first place, and is why I like renaissance themed steampunk the best still. Really worth a go!

And some little words (bought it on day one and still have it in pristine condition. Still has one of the best game intro movies, even by today's standards).
One of the first things I thought upon seeing that bit of new was wondering how it could be made to work together with e.g. Random Mobs across several resource packs. (I don't think the Multi-Resource Pack thing has been brought up in the MCPatcher thread yet.)
I was the first then...Yipee!
I'm definitely no expert on the subject, but it seems to me it will be a real headache for kahr and probably a case of having to follow the same system, ie first in the list gets priority. This is going to get messy though, because it's not really going to allow users to pick and choose textures from favorite packs, the ordering priority will still mean it only fills in missing gaps that might exist in the texture packs higher up in the list...I think. I assume therefore it will be necessary to create those gaps if you want a certain texture, which is no different than manually swapping things in and out as we've always done.
Hello Glimmar and fellow Steampunk users. I started playing MC at the 1.3 version and have over the course of time used a variety of texture packs. I noticed this pack a long time ago and to be honest, gave it short shrift. I thought "too odd" so I moved on without even trying it. Okay... but recently I upgraded to 1.6.2 adding a few small mods for my SSP gaming and I thought "what the heck, why not try out some other texture packs?" I piddled around with a few packs then decided I'd go ahead and give this one an actual tryout. Well blow me down.. I like it! And not because I'm a mechanical freak or anything like that (I'm actually a meteorology freak, haha,) I like it flat out for being a great texture pack... period. My favorite item is the torch... oh my, they are magnificent! (I have a feeling your torches are tapping into my subconscious childhood; some half century old memories of railroads.)
Hope you don't mind my showing a couple pictures... and while at it, can you explain the red tree? The trunk looks made of blood red jelly. Is this a glitch of some sort? Also, please check your stone sword (it's showing up as a medieval war club on this and other texture packs when using the latest Forge (build 844.)
This was my hillside "hidey-hole" to start the game. It's been expanded a bit and improved (the roof is cobble slabs to prevent widespread creeper damage.)

I think it all really depends on how Mo' Jang implements this. I'm no stranger to load ordering, having been a committer for the master list of the BOSS for Bethesda games, and it could all be really smooth for Kahr if it's "seen" by the game as a single pack (as someone mentioned on the other thread), which just has things overriding bottom-to-top. I fully trust the Mo' Jang Crew to create a system that will be utterly unworkable though. They seem to have a knack for that sort of thing.
Lol! I'm all for change and new things, but until we get our hands on this new system it seems to me there could still be a lot of confusion down the line. Even after years of being dependent on MCPatcher, I probably understand it less than any other texture pack artist out there.
It does seem that Mojang are at least on the road to catering for mods, but to me it appears to making things more...not less...complicated. A few people I know in real life, who usually come back to Minecraft and MCPatcher every update time, have been totally put off by 1.6. And now I'm beginning to hate the new launcher...it's design, how clunky it is, but this is just my opinion as a regular user who has to hop in and out of the game, usually a hundred times a day sometimes, to check how edits appear.

No probs with the pics...I always like to see how people build with the textures. Also glad you're enjoying the pack after trying it again. If you like cobble, you'll really like my new 64x with plenty of variety for road and wall construction.
Not sure what you mean with regard to the blood-red tree trunk. That does sound like a glitch to me and may be one of your mods over-riding one or two textures (I noticed the pink foliage in your second pic seems to be mod related).
Having said that, my jungle tree log is certainly different than most other texture packs, but I would argue more accurate :P. Most other jungle tree logs are represented by a dark rough bark texture, wereas mine is a light tan brown with a moss overlay which acts as a green shadow under the vines. Last I checked, quite a few giant hardwood trees in the amazon jungle have a pale smooth moss-covered surface, and that just appealed more as a contrast to the spruce and oak logs. I also like how they appear when you look at the jungle from a distance.
I need to upgrade the jungle log texture to 64x and so it will probably be refined to something which might prove a little more useful. Lol! Of course we might be talking entirely about different trees.
I'll check the war club texture out, but I don't use Forge or other mods that require Forge, as it confuses things for me when texturing. I need to see things untrammeled by any modifications other than pure MCPatcher and TMI.
30 odd different ctm textures for top and bottom and sides. Still got the mossy cobble to do and steps may well be a different variation altogether. Just takes a lot of playing with to get it right. Hence why I created the little fishing village!
Will show some pics of the new ctm'd 64x vines (as hinted at in the pics above) and the new ctm'd reeds as soon as I can.
I'm also not ignoring all the kind posts I got over the summer, I will reply to most of those as and when I can.
I love the new cobble! I use it for roads. I especially like the random large cobblestones. Those really break up the monotony.
Mencken_Fan, what mod do you use to get that blood-red jello tree? Is that not what it looks like when you have vanilla textures turned on? I can see from your pics that where your mods add an item not covered by Glimmar's pack, it retains it's vanilla appearance. Like the white flowers in front of the building in your third picture. As for the stone sword in Glimmars's pack, yes it is a club of some kind. All of the stone tools look more primitive than their more 'advanced' alternatives. But as for how it retains that look with other texture packs, I couldn't say.
While I'll not disagree that it's rather clunky (I kind of like it, but I'm also a programmer :)), it does sound like you're reloading the game more than necessary? Does "F3 + T" not work to reload the texture pack?
Nah, don't get me wrong, I like the idea behind it, but I've never had time to really get to grips with using different version setups. Little changes between updates easily throw my comfortable working environment.
For me recently, this past week actually, it's gone very slow from clicking the Minecraft launch icon to actually getting into my world. Which made me wonder if they'd changed something to do with this new system of Resource pack ordering.
I was under the impression that F3 + T didn't work with MCPatcher and MCPatcher's ability to recognize edits wasn't functioning after 1.5 or 1.6 can't remember which, but you can tell I'm no programmer and don't trust myself to mess up! I've always preferred to completely exit the game, study any screen pics I've taken of the effect of new textures, re-edit and re-launch the game. A very clunky approach, but it's become a set routine that also gives me a little break to think about the changes I may have made. Except now I have time to go and make a coffee while it loads up, but not every time!!
I really need to get a little more familiar with shortcuts, as I'm forever also jumping in and out of the menu to change fog distance etc. and I noticed from the wiki there's a shortcut for that. I guess my creativity comes at the price of set rituals that make me comfortable.
Yep, betterglass is surprisingly easy to work with as long as you take into account the fact that you can only use one ctm method on it. You can't matchtiles/matchblocks, you just have to pick one ctm method and stick to that. Hence the reason for slight overlapping on the frames of my glass (it's hard to see since the glass is transparent luckily) it's because the frame uses vertical ctm, and the glass uses random. I couldn't matchtiles the vertical ctm tiles to randomize them.
Your pack has come on in leaps and bounds, but that glass is still my favorite for sure!
Oh yes, I can't wait to check it out— but I may as well write my thanks here while it downloads. I'm really excited for this update, it is, in my opinion, one of the best in while; for your pack and for Minecraft. I can appreciate all of the hard work that went into such a massive update, and I thank you for it. I am especially thankful because yesterday a very sad thing happened. Derivation was officially discontinued, so now yours is the only surviving pack from my "original favorites." (a.k.a. the textures packs that I would actually use.) So now Glimmar's Steampunk is the only option for me.
Many thanks, zamaj...and thanks for those kind words. I'm really sad to hear about Derivation being discontinued, it's a lovely pack indeed. I can well appreciate the pressure the last few updates have add on MC texture artists. All this chopping and changing Mojang have been making, hasn't made for a smooth ride. I wish Levaunt all the very best in any future endeavors.
Wow, I love the new blocks! Im gonna have fun mixing and matching with all these options! I have a question tho, if I wanted to make all of the clay blocks have a ctm similar to the stone slabs (Glimmarmarblecolumn) how would I go about doing that?
edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. When Im all done, I'll show you my results
Ooo! Glad you figured it. It takes me an age to get my head back round my ctm work, let alone explain it. I'm more a Star Wars "Feel the Force, Luke" kind of ctm user. I vaguely understand it while I'm working with it, but understand all it's complexities...hehe...brain is too addled for that!
hey glimmar just got the new update and im happy to be back at work. loving it. also here is a pic of one of my updates to rapture
Oh! I remember how awesome your rapture build is! Hope you can make another movie of any more additional or old work. I really must feature it in my OP soon! Glad you like the new update...it's nice to think the effort I put in (and it near killed me this time, on top of RL work and family!) is still being used after so long.
Hi Glimmar!
I figured out how to make those gold pillars I was talking to you about. I used your carved stone texture and Misa's quartzblock lines texture to get it to look how I wanted it. What do you think?
Yay! It's out! Now I can finallyalmostfinish my creation!
I present to you the S.S. Droideka:
Hats off to you, Glimmar, for making such an awesome texture pack. By the way, this is only the first part of my city in the sky.
Droideka, that's awesome! I love the color and gadgetry in evidence there, and many thanks for uploading the pics.
I guess when I get round to building in the sky, my airships will also probably sport a lot of colorful balloon material, but not having done much yet I can't really say how my designs will turn out, I chop and change things on a whim all the time. Anyways, I hope you'll continue to build on what you've got there.
Well, I think that's about a third of the posts. I'll continue the rest when I need a rest from finishing off my new mossy cobble. Thanks for the kind and supportive comments, guys, they are always much appreciated.
All I can say is, WOW. This has come a long way since I first looked at it back in beta, (or was it alpha? I don't remember, but in the early phase of this) and now I look at it, and there is so much new stuff! I love the clocks by the way

New stuff on the way too, whether there's an MC 1.7 or not...that is if I don't get too distracted with Rome Total War 2.

Here's a few pics to be going on with:
30 odd different ctm textures for top and bottom and sides. Still got the mossy cobble to do and steps may well be a different variation altogether. Just takes a lot of playing with to get it right. Hence why I created the little fishing village!
Will show some pics of the new ctm'd 64x vines (as hinted at in the pics above) and the new ctm'd reeds as soon as I can.
I'm also not ignoring all the kind posts I got over the summer, I will reply to most of those as and when I can.

Curse PremiumMe too, as you can see, I love building cobble roads, hence why I really wanted to make something worthy of all that loose stone!
Thanks, mate.

Curse PremiumI shall put this up in the OP, Phillipzu. Many thanks again and sorry for the delay.
Your pack has come on in leaps and bounds, but that glass is still my favorite for sure!
Many thanks, zamaj...and thanks for those kind words.
Hope it didn't disapoint.
I shall check that out.
Oh! I remember how awesome your rapture build is! Hope you can make another movie of any more additional or old work. I really must feature it in my OP soon! Glad you like the new update...it's nice to think the effort I put in (and it near killed me this time, on top of RL work and family!) is still being used after so long.
Very nice.
Many thanks, StoryStratos.
That's what I remember! Just Fantastic!!
Well, I think that's about a third of the posts. I'll continue the rest when I need a rest from finishing off my new mossy cobble. Thanks for the kind and supportive comments, guys, they are always much appreciated.

Curse PremiumMany thanks, Toastergod, much appreciate the kind words.
New stuff on the way too, whether there's an MC 1.7 or not...that is if I don't get too distracted with Rome Total War 2.
