There's no texture support for the Smoking Blocks yet, so it shouldn't look like bricks.
Here's a screenshot of my old factory with smoke stacks (4 smoking blocks per stack). They do more than just make bigger smoke, it gives it a longer duration, so it can spread out further.
I agree, it is odd that they havent fixed it! and there is a mod called Twilight Forest that has a block called "Smoking Block" that literally just sends out a giant version of the smoke particles, if you would like a screen shot of it I can make one, I am using it in the smoke stacks of my factory and they really bring it to life! It is an amzing block and with the textures of brick on your pack, it looks REALLY good for the factory!!! I cannot get over how amazing the mobs look, and the enchantment table. Sometime if you would like, i can show you the City either by whitelisting you on the server, or through screen shots to show how amazing your pack has changed the city into true steampunk. Especially with steam from the steam boilers from railcraft in liquiducts from thermal expansion making it real steampunk! again, AMAZING job!
The only edits I am making is adding mod support for minerals and what not, I do not want to change anything you have already put work into! It is amazing as it is. I am just going to do my best to make machines match somewhat closely to what you have, if i can haha
Ooo! Yes please. Any pics help me to realize which way to go with future textures and give everybody else here examples of how the pack could/should be used.

I'm very jealous of those Smoking Blocks. Such a simple but incredibly effective visual element. I really must give FTB a whirl again after I've managed to update, even if it's just to see that smoke. My only problem being that FTB usually blows my mind due to it's massive nature and becomes an incredible distraction from the business of perfecting the base pack. Lol! Can't win either way. I don't know how you two manage.
I'm curious to know if having lots of smoke pouring out causes any lag?
What bugs me slightly is that Minecraft itself doesn't come with basic options that allow you slightly more control over such things as smoke, etc. Mod api...if it isn't just a pipe dream...will hopefully provide some solutions for texture pack artists who, having to keep their packs in line with updates, are slightly more constrained than everyone else. Though once 1.5 settles down, there won't be quite the urgency to update blocks and items to ensure there aren't glaring gaps in the landscape or inventory. So that's a good thing.

I've experienced no lag whatsoever with smoking blocks. It's usually the super-huge trees from ExtraBiomes when encountered in their natural forest biomes (Redwood Forest, Temperate Rainforest, Lush Redwoods and Snowy Rainforest biomes), and those only cause lag on low-end computers.
There's plenty of amazing steampunk-ish blocks and designs in FTB like copper, tin, bronze, brass and steel, with several new types of bricks and 20+ types of wood as well as moving Windmills and various other machines.
Oh, and you can make massive Steam Boilers, steam engines, a variety of trains and anything else you can shake a stick at.
I'm having some problems with the 1.5 snapshot version in the latest snapshot (13w09c). Here are some pictures:
I think this has to do with the new way animations are stored.
I wouldn't advise using MC snapshot 13w09c yet, at least with my pack. As of yesterday, kahr still hadn't upgraded MC patcher to cope with the problem of the new animation requirements of having a .text file for every animated block and item. Stick with snapshot 13w07a for now. That snapshot is as far as I've been able to safely use my pack...and that probably goes for most texture packs who support snapshots at the moment.
I'm currently waiting to see if kahr changes MC Patcher so that it automatically generates the necessary .text files for animated blocks and items. I'm not looking to do tedious work like that myself, unless it's absolutely necessary.
The fact that Mojang are holding back with the pre-release version of 1.5, looks like they're encountering lots more bugs than anticipated.

I haven't been using MCpatcher or any third-party programs at all. In 13w07a and before, your pack was working perfectly in the 1.5 snapshots.

Animated blocks and items in texture packs now requires the animation definition (previously it was optional)
I'm guessing this is the source of the problem. I'm pretty sure you can fix it by just adding a line of text somewhere.

Look forward to seeing the pics, then.
I'm not one for servers though, sadly. I'm very much a lone builder type, so apart from way back in 2011 have never ventured forth into the big wild world again.

Ah! Yes. I just made the assumption that everyone who has problems, has them as a result of one combination or other of mods or patchers. Indeed...the problem is definitely to do with the fact that from MC snapshot 13w09 it's become necessary to add a .text file to each and every animated block...something I will do of course, if kahr doesn't make the process automatic for me.
I realize now you don't use MC Patcher, so when I upload my GS version 11 pack, you won't have to use MC Patcher to do the conversion yourself, it will already be done, however, you will be missing out on many, many other features if you don't use MC Patcher...animated villagers, mobs, guis, better skies, and much more. I'm guessing you know that already though.
I'll have to ask you to bear with me on this, because I'm currently embroiled in working on other aspects of the MC 1.5 update, specifically an animated version of the hopper gui, so I don't want to get distracted from the intricacies of that task, until it's competed, or I'll forget what goes where, etc. As soon as kahr updates again, and if the patcher automates the .text business, I will of course upload another fixed snapshot version if we're all still waiting around for the official update.

Okay, seems I forgot to do my Mod support textures. But i'm back with an... almost updated gregtech mod support. A couple of versions behind, but they're not in FTB yet, so i'll be good for another month. Also got some new IC2 textures as well.

ic2/sprites/crops_0.png (This is a brand new set of textures that wasn't supported before.)
ic2/sprites/item_0.png (lots of changes to this. Took out the hazmat suit and switched it for an old-school steampunk diving suit. Among other things...)
ic2/sprites/block_0.png (a few small changes. Darker reinforced door, retextured construction foam, fixed a bug with tin ore, etc...)

Yeah... Big list of mod supported stuff.
Awesome addition, as per usual, Vermillion. You're a powerhouse of mod texture editing.
I hope you make a current version of this pack with the new textures that still apply (like the netherrack and stone slabs)
Obviously I can't ask you to do it if you don't want to but it would be nice.
I'd rather wait until Bukkit (and the server I'm on obviously) get updated to 1.5 before updating MC itself.
and it does mean I'll lose out on new textures for my favorite packs. (I'm glad Sphax added the new textures for previous versions of his pack for example)
You should take a look at making unique log tops too for each log type.
I kinda miss this when I'm not using Misa's.
Ah! If I had time, Deepblue. Obviously many of the new things wouldn't translate, but of those that would, it would be fairly easy for someone to edit my 1.5 offering and upload it here if I get way behind (which it looks like I'm getting.:( ). Also things like the new cart and chest would be very easy to pull out and drop in your 1.4.x version. However, I think most of the new stuff would only be usable in 1.5, sorry.
Where can the stone heads and the carved stone frieze blocks be found? It says that you have to type in a command to get them. What do you type in and how do you do that?
Edit: I figured out how to type things in, but when I type in the command, it says that I do not have permission to use that command, Help please.

If you're on a single player world and can't do it, it's probably because you had cheats disabled when you created the world. If you're on multiplayer, it's either because you don't have Mod privileges or cheats are disabled completely on the server.
Your new green pipe work is just divine darling just divine a clear favorite *clears throat, manly voice now* Dam you Glimmar I haven't swapped over to 1.5 yet so will have to wait till i can see all your latest creations all proper like but ooh by 'eck it will be worth it!

Haha I completely understand that, it was more for a look at the city based on your pack, to give ya a tour if you wanted xD you dont have to actually join the server, it was an invitation to look around We have a clock tower we have to show you by the way! with a functioning analog tower clock!
Hey, if any of the mod support artists have time to help me with a request, small one, id love to know. Im basicly looking for a server support with this pack, personal use only. If at any time i use the pack in a recording or screenshot i will credit the editor and glimmar ^.^

Would it be possible to convert the world using 'TooManyItems' for single player? Only playing in creative mode these days, I've never needed to test this on a survival world. Though come to think of it I did use TMI to change my Newglim survival world to creative ages ago, so yes, that would be one way to go to enable cheats.

Haha! I like the different English accents slipping through in your latest posts!
Glad you like the pipework, mate...thanks! Yes, there are some good things to play with in 1.5. I'm still trying to understand exactly how some things work. Given the nature of my pack, you'd think I'd be well into using redstone circuitry and such, but I'm not and find understanding how to represent the new comparator very difficult. You'll have a lot of fun texturing the new stuff, but I wouldn't wish all the extra sleepless nights it will bring.
Oh dear! I really hope I haven't caused offence to Minihilly. If it's any consolation, for the first year of my existence here on the forums, I was mistaken for a she rather than a he. Not sure why really, probably because of occasional reference to my family and the fact that knowing my kids probably read my posts, I've always been careful to curtail any flowery use of the English language, so probably didn't come across very 'laddish'. I can't very well ground them for such misdemeanors if I'm just as bad!

Oh, any clock towers must get an airing round here. I'm wondering about working on the new animated clock next, so any time related builds will certainly be of interest.
I'm hoping the clock I make will fit nicely with the new decorative pipe/column texture and others, to make the odd grandfather clock, or 'clocking on' type factory clock, a possible feature of future builds. Only trouble is, it will take up an enormous amount of time to get it looking right, and as there are still other 1.5 terrain and item blocks to complete, I'm in two minds.

I managed to figure everything for the ctm blocks out, I didn't have cheats enabled. I was wondering if, when the 1.5 update hits, it might be possible to add to the ctm blocks by letting us add which specific version of the blocks we want as opposed to them being set at random? So, with the carved head blocks for example, being able to specifically add the version of the block that we like via the ctm command?

Here's a screenshot of my old factory with smoke stacks (4 smoking blocks per stack). They do more than just make bigger smoke, it gives it a longer duration, so it can spread out further.
