Ok, after a bit of mad science I've been able to do what I wanted using smooth stone but (and it's a pretty big but) it required editing the block data directly in the world using VoxelSniper on my test server. Apparently blocks that don't normally track the data values don't handle them well in your inventory.
However I do have good news. While smooth stone might not behave well, wood planks do. By setting it to use the wood plank block and the unused metadata value of 4 I was able to use /give <yourname> 5 1 4 to give myself a wood plank block with a data value of 4. I was then able to place and harvest this wood without losing that value and when placed it had the stone head textures.
So it IS possible to get those wonderful faces in your world without giving up another block for them. Not the most elegant solution though but it works. For now. (Provided Mojang doesn't add another wood type.)

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
juliusand1, I PM'd you, but I don't mind you uploading edits in my thread at all.
So long as it's not from another texture pack, meaning either completely original or based on my work, and it's within my thread, I'm happy for folk to share stuff.
As often as I can, I pick any contributions like that up and include them in my 'alternative textures' folder in the pack along with appropriate credit. ksheep does the same for mods, with my gratitude, as I don't have time to experiment with that area. Lol, I don't even get time to properly experiment with the basic pack textures these days!
Hold fire on any major editing, Auld Grump!
I'm going to upload version 9 of the pack which returns things back to normal with an opt-in folder with all the stuff for those who would still like to have the heads and runes to play with. There are instructions for what to do so that folk are able to choose another block for the head if they so wish. I just don't want to mess around with anyone's hard work more than absolutely necessary.
Hope you liked the rest of the new things.
Oh, I liked the rest of the things just fine - I even like the heads. The new spruce... looks great, but I had been using the square tiled version for floors in posh places. Nothing ruined by the change, it just looks different. Less posh, more solid - and looks closer to the oak.
But seeing the Zeppelin (well, part of the Zeppelin) suddenly made out of faces....
I am making it sound worse than it is - more work was done on the mooring tower than on the Zeppelin.
The main purpose of the Zeppelin is to have an excuse for the Beacon.
The pyramid is going to be the roof of the control tower.
When I am done it will be another home, I think - the gondola is already finished, and attached to the mooring tower, so I put the bedroom in one of the cabins. Less time running home (up until I closed up the gondola I was living in the mortuary).
But the amount of time I have had to spend healing after plummeting to the ground.... I keep forgetting that even with the shift down you can still step off stairs and into the air - and I make my roofs (and the primary supports of the mooring tower) out of spruce stairs.
Going for a mostly realistic (if anachronistic) Zeppelin. Not fancy, long and grey.

Yer a genius, sir! Thank you so much for this and for what it means as potential. I once again have incentive to add to the heads and the runes and the prospect of other useful functional and decorative blocks. Even if turns out they can't all be used, they would still be available as alts.
I find the metadata side of things somewhat confusing at the best of times. My attempts to get the half-block spruce planks to connect properly with cast iron strips on all edges was partly successful, in that the 'bottom' half spruce plank has a border of black metal along the top and bottom edge (as intended), but the 'top' half spruce plank only has the black metal strip along the top edge. I would be grateful if you or someone could take a look at my feeble attempts in the block126.properties files. The birch planks work as intended, but not so the half-block spruce. Also the spruce steps aren't as elegant as I would like, with the way the metal strips work.

I'm looking forward to a pictorial tour.
Glad you like the spruce. In my frustration to find something a little unique, it occurred to me it would be nice to have something that looked a little more worn and industrial...like the kind of weathered timbers used as railway sleepers, or tarred Elizabethan beams. In the end it became a compromise in terms of shade and the use of heavier riveted iron connecting strips, but it kind of gelled because of the way it complimented the more refined oak plank texture. I'm certainly glad it's not generally reviled, because I like it's functional use a lot in my own world! Even though I haven't had much chance to use it so far!
The ship itself is complete, maybe some finishing touches. The other part, refueling outpost is different story.
Hello everyone,i am following this topic for a while and looking for inspiration, cause i am not big steam punk/diesel punk fan,but this universe of "Victorian Airships" is magnificent.I just wanted to show you my continuing project,(i have chosen big scale,so it is taking time) it is airship refueling outpost,i am planning build more ships, and few buildings on the ground (storages, barracks, etc.)Airship in the pictures is "HMA Undaunted"(Her/His Majesty Airship) "Fearless" class Light Cruiser. It is huge beast,i am not sure if it is flyable, probably is,but i don't know if my computer can handle it(So far more than 9000 blocks). So,the second one will be frigate half the size of the cruiser.
I hope i will see here more projects.
Live long and prosper.
Hull hangar bay.
Aft hangar bay and tested Pinassa.
Bridge and CIC.
One of side gun stations.
Engineering control station.
Anti-Grav Generator.
Marvellous! We all need inspiration and good examples of how this pack can be best used and your airship certainly provides that. Many thanks for sharing and I look forward to seeing it in action! (see below)
ok, NOW i know why so furious about the gray wool, that ship is f****ng amazing! really good job! will you make a download for the world?
if yes tell me, because my brother will loveit, good job again, and tanks to glimmar for the update
Well it's excellent to have a good outcome out of all this!
My pleasure on the update side of things. Especially when I get to see how the pack is being used.
Hi.I am glad you like it and i don't have any problem with uploading save file.I am going to update my progress on Zeppelin mod forum,i am sure it is known here. But if you want,i can post it also here with new save files. This is my first project which i am posting on any forum and after my bad entry here is good to be recognized.Again i apologize for my impulsive first entry,it was exaggerated.
Important think, ship is more-less complete, but i have to complete some interior stuff like loading mechanism of forward guns and crew quarters.
Will you be making an actual loading mechanism out of redstone and tnt? I would love to see something like your airship blasting away with that forward cannon, or some broadside cannons rippling away!!
As it is my first post in this forums, I had to thanks Glimmar for this amazing texture pack. I've been using it for months since the day I found it, and I love it.
I've been thinking for weeks what to do in order to use this pack in a big project, and a friend of mine has given me the opportunity to do it. He is creating a Steampunk-based-RP-forum, and one of the things he has drawn is the map of "Overcast", a huge city with several districts, harbours, palaces...
I know it will take some weeks (or months) to make it, as I'm building it on my own, with the only help of my sis.. without any mod or pluggin to make the things faster, but I prefer that way. For now, I've done... 3%? 2%? even less? of the map. I wasn't expecting to have the heads replaced, as I'm using them in some buildings, but as long as they are in the alt-textures, I'm ok with everything you do xD
I'll link 2 pics of my progress, even if it is quite poor:
I greatly appreciate your thanks, Lua_Rojas and love the scale of your plans. Best wishes for it's success to you and your sister...keep us posted if you can.
You've just made me realize what's missing in my own world...kerb stones! I can see how you've used that design and I realize now that kerb stones are what make a road in a city look convincing. Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. Oh, and welcome to the forums!
Is it possible to set the chiseled stone bricks with CTM so that they use the stone head texture when on their own or side by side but become columns when stacked?
Also you either need to work on the ice or change the colour of the water.
The ice has a blue tint to it but the water is more green-ish.
Aw! But I like the way the top and bottom of the pillar works as edge/capping stones when in side to side strips.
It doesn't bother me too much that the ice contrasts so much with the water...I think that happens in nature, but my ice is definitely way overdue for improvement...just what to do with it though?

You could use the faces for the single blocks with CTM but then you would be limited to just one face. I don't see any way to randomize individual tiles in connected textures. That and you wouldn't be able to place the stone heads on top of the pillars.
As for the ice, well obviously it's pushing out all of those toxic heavy metal salts as it freezes. You could possibly eat the ice in Glimmar's world but I wouldn't suggest drinking the water.

For the top half-blocks you add 8 to the metadata. So if you change block126a to:
I tried the 32x version on the laptop, an it work! finally even ''small-caliber'' computer can taste the steampunk!
Excellent! I didn't dare ask about the 32x and how it might have been effected by all the extra animation, ctm and the move to 64x items. But that's good news, indeed. Thanks for the info.

I wish I'd just PM'd you about it before... I wasted an entire afternoon trying to understand metadata enough to fix that little problem. I've tried to find a good reference list for Minecraft metadata online, but just can't find anything I can fully understand, which is a slight disadvantage when it comes to ctm.
I think my brain is addled from drinking too much Glimmar water!
I just thought it looked like a leftover from when you used a different water colour, I dunno.
It didn't really look right.
As for what to do with it, use CTM.
Less detail in smaller spaces will make it look much smoother and slippery.
Just look at Misa's ice.
Water colour has always been the same. In fact both textures date right back to the beginning. I don't think I'll ever tackle a complete re-edit of the water animation...lost way too much sleep over that task! My ice is more of an acceptable task, but as beautiful as Misa's ice is, I'm not sure I want to tackle it in quite the same way (using 8x8 blocks I mean), but certainly I'd be going down the ctm pathway.
It's just not as exciting a prospect as some other things. The problem is, I don't usually build near ice and so it's not really entered my, "Gosh that needs urgent attention!" list of work. There's too many texture problems like that, to which I'm applying 'work avoidance' tactics.
Starting in Minecraft 1.2 (actually weekly 12w08a), the bit at 0x4 is used as follows:
0: Stairs are regular
1: Stairs are upside down
All that line about bit 0x4 really means is if you want the data value for the upside down stairs you just add 4 to the values listed above. So an upside down west stair would have a data value of 5. To specify all the upside down stairs in CTM you would use:
metadata=4 5 6 7
The right side up ones
metadata=1 2 3 4
Just the west ones
metadata=1 5
I hope that helps and I wasn't too confusing.

Tried messing around with the Texture Mixer, and I was a bit overwhelmed. Is there any way to make the base texture pack one is manipulating a pack other than the default? I was messing around with the 32x pack and different textures from the alternative texture pages and found it to be easier to just open them up with GIMP and do it manually.
I do like the tool, for the record. Just seems a bit beyond my grasp.
On a side note, I have found that the heads in one of the alternative texture files works wonderfully as a replacement to the CTM heads. After messing around with the 32x version I have converted some of the ores to machinery parts and the sponge to a metal grate so my lava and water pipes have ends where they can take in/let out their respective fluids.

If you unzip the texture pack you want to use as a base into it's own folder you can then load it in the mixer for the base. I currently don't support loading from a zip file for the base but I've got that stubbed out in the code so it will happen at some point. I also want to make the load dialog a bit more like a proper one eventually.
So it IS possible to get those wonderful faces in your world without giving up another block for them. Not the most elegant solution though but it works. For now. (Provided Mojang doesn't add another wood type.)
I've just been having a happy time wandering around replacing the grey wool blocks that had returned in my world with the ctm'd wood block stand-in, to get my stone heads back. You coders are definately like wizards, with your complicated magic spells. Have you ever wondered how close the comparison is in this modern age? It's a remarkable similarity really... things in this virtual world just come alive when the right spell is spoken! Anyways, thanks so much again, Fool for making the impossible, possible! I can again start work on a bigger collection of carved heads and unusual carved rune stones...even if it's only for my own use!
Would you believe I'd never used the command line before. So it took me a while to figure out how to correctly award myself that ctm wood block stone head! Sad...I know.
Trouble is I didn't get to work on any of the ideas I have for some other additions tonight, nor to experiment on some new textures. But I think I'm entitled to a little break while I recharge the batteries.
I shall include the heads again in a future update with the new .properties files you made (with instructions on how to use) and will fully credit you for making it possible. If and when Mojang change things in a way that effects the use of the heads, I'll have to come begging at your door for a solution. Other than changing the block into something else, if Mojang did eventually add more wood or radically change things, could it be fatal as regards my map, which is quite dear to me after over two years? I obviously have back-ups from before the woodblock stoneheads.
Most of the data values are listed in fairly plain text but I think the most confusing part for a non programmer is when it starts talking about bits.
Take the entry on stairs for example.

Lol! I'm not sure it did and I'm still confused and even more worried now! I did refer to the Data Values page on the Minecraft wiki, for the easier more straight forward edits. However, being an artist and relatively long in the tooth, tired and stressed, does not make for relaxed understanding. Thanks for you patience. mate.
Jus' givin' you ideas as usual, don't let your little book explode (or implode, whatever).
Way too many people add too much detail to their ice textures and it doesn't always look good, or even look like ice should.
Even if you just used CTM to free up a bit of space so there isn't so much detail in a single block.
Haha. No worries. I need someone to keep prodding me about things...keeps me on me toes!

I currently don't support loading from a zip file for the base but I've got that stubbed out in the code so it will happen at some point. I also want to make the load dialog a bit more like a proper one eventually.
I don't want to be cluttering up Glimmar's thread with discussions about the mixer if I can help it.
Ooo! That's probably my fault for asking about it here!
I get lazy and don't do the right thing either, when it should be properly discussed on the 'texture mix machine' thread. I'm extremely keen for it to remain prominent and progress, even from a selfish point of view...so that users can mix and match my alts etc. without me having to spend ages uploading to an online mixer!
On the topic of the faces that I placed on the grey wool texture: I've found that they have a surprising amount of depth. I like to place them on top of columns with upside down brick stairs as supports, and that makes the wool block a bit recessed.
@The_Fool76
Apologies, I wasn't sure where to post it since it was related to both. I'll be sure to post any further comments in your thread.

O: I like that idea!
I have yet to experiment on a large scale with upside down stairs and all the other great additions Mojang has thrown out this year.
Incidentally, the head there in your pic was an early alt for the top of my ender chest, I think, but it was also the thing that sparked my interest in adding a bit of lore into the game with the idea of the 'great engineer' head stones.
Yes the release they made for 1.4.3 tommorow, over 90 bug fixes and a new music disc.
Ooo! I didn't know they were on target for tomorrow. I better use it as an excuse to work on a new 64x music 'roll' item, as well as the new music disc/roll thingy. Thanks, Hunter.

Incidentally, the head there in your pic was an early alt for the top of my ender chest, I think, but it was also the thing that sparked my interest in adding a bit of lore into the game with the idea of the 'great engineer' head stones.
Ooo! I didn't know they were on target for tomorrow. I better use it as an excuse to work on a new 64x music 'roll' item, as well as the new music disc/roll thingy. Thanks, Hunter.
Haha! Thanks for that.
