Didn't think it was possible, but tried a quick experiment with 4 different apples and I can confirm it doesn't work. Sorry, mate.
Darn, I was hoping it would be possible now... At least there's some hope, I asked the same question over on Bonemouse's thread, and learned that Kahr may very well be adding support for it! Here's hoping I won't have to wait too long.

I'd never really considered it, to tell you the truth, but sounds nice if it makes finds, inventories and chests more interesting. I wonder what the end result of all this will be?
Anyways, had to do more work on the new birch wood block, as it was looking pretty abysmal as steps, the end result was quite good fun. Surprising what you can get out of just one block using CTM and a few birch picture frames:
Wow, I was a little skeptical before, but that birch construction is actually very impressive.
As you already know, you only need my ctm.png if you're running Optifine (so I'm surprised you left it in while you're modifying textures, sorry for the trouble that caused), and even then the better solution is to just remove Optifine's ctm.png (which, admittedly, is a little more work).

Howdy, Demi_Person. Glad you like the look of the new birch wood. I was trying to get a little more out of it by way of it being ambiguous as a material (could be sandstone, brass or birch wood at a push), and also having a little fun with the ctm possibilities. The new picture frame adds a lot more into the mix too!
It's taken me a while to get to grips with ctm (I'm slow to change), but I was very grateful for the file you made me. It seemed to keep a few folk happy that would otherwise have assumed something was wrong with the pack. I think users of Optifine are more familiar with ctm, so I may just take that ctm file out so it doesn't cause confusion later.
Wow Glimmar, every time you post something about the birch I love it even more
Really lookin forward to this V8 release, Im lovin everything youve done! Especially the stone variations, they are simply amazing.
Thanks, mate.
I need a little encouragement at the mo', because as happy as I am with the birch, I'm equally frustrated with the amount of time I'm spending on the spruce. The trouble is once you start trying to improve something, it's like a disease and you spot bigger and bigger flaws all over the place. Which means more unfinished 1.4 stuff isn't getting done.
There'll be lots of new things in the next update, but I feel like I'm going over old ground rather than forging ahead with new things. I suppose I knew this would happen if I embarked on more 64x terrain features.
I have a new 64x spruce log, but trying my best to come up with something fresh for the spruce planks that contrasts neatly with the other wood.
Just out of curiosity, what program do you use? I prefer GIMP, it's free, and I'm more used to it. Also, what do you do to scale down the pack? Do you create new textures, or just use a special filter?
While I cant say I do nearly as much work, I know that feeling about going over old stuff. Ive had to stop myself with my Renewal in order to tackle new stuff and its annoying knowing there are new things to be done but also not quite happy with the current work. Ill be rootin for ya, Good luck

Almost always Gimp, like you. I have Photoshop, which I occasionally use, but I'm thankfully for my wallet I'm more comfortable with Gimp.
As regards scaling, it was more the other way from 32 to 64x to begin with, but anything new now is mostly made at 64x and laboriously scaled down. I don't use any auto-filtering or anything fancy. I just re-scale using 'Image/Scale Image' and then do the best I can by hand to tidy up scrunched up pixels, etc. checking for inevitable tiling issues not present at 64x. Very frustrating work, coupled with introducing a lot more CTM tiles means everything has taken so much longer working towards my next update v.8. That's why I've decided to make everything in both packs, other than terrain, at 64x.

If I was an ordered sort of person, it might not be so bad, but having made so many failed 'to do' lists in the past, I've given up working to a plan. Whatever kicks me in the teeth when I'm walking around my world, and whatever Mojang/MC Patcher dangle in front of me, gets some attention ...until I absent-mindedly wander off on some other venture. To make a list of all the stuff needing attention, as some very organised folk around these parts do, would only make me ill!
I like the stone building in the background. Commiserations again on losing the chiseled stone.
Sometimes the water physics still confuse me... - I used four (four!) buckets of water to create my cascade, another two for the fountains that were destroyed.
Repairing it I had to remove eight (eight!) buckets to get the flow to stop - by the time I was finished there were squids swimming in the crater....
Used Amidst to find another jungle temple... this one had no chiseled stone columns.... And it looks like those were the only two jungle temples in reach. My plan to use the chiseled stone for pipes has gone astray.
Thinking about designing a gasworks.
For the record - my steampunk mood music leans towards the Pogues.

Love the Pogues!
Also let us see progress pics of the gasworks, etc. as they become available.
Will be mighty interested to see if my ctm stone work gets put to good use. I'm hoping the chiseled stone columns will be favorably accepted. The Head Stones with carved sigil tops ...I'm not so sure how they will go down. If I had more time, I'd be able to build more examples of how these additions might be used.
Now back to sort spruce planks out and hopefully leave enough time to catch up on 1.4 items and perhaps zombie villager and mad professor stand-ins. Oh flip, then all the 64x ctm stuff to downscale to 32x. I have some ideas for the Wither (I think I've been spelling it with a 'h'...don't know why?), but I can't see me havin' enough time to complete it.
Sometimes, and only sometimes, you can find pillars outside of the jungle temples - I have found one, which had six columns of four.
The second jungle temple had no columns.
I found the one with the columns in a previous Weekly Snapshot, I forget which one. I do not know if they are still on some temples or if the have gone away.
Glimmar - an idea on pipes - would it be possible to replace the Nether Brick Fences with something that looks more like pipes? I do not think that all that many folks use the Nether Brick Fences for much, so I do not think that it would harm existing builds.
Working on a small - three tower - gas works. Going a lot faster than either the water works or the iron foundry.

Not too sure about pipes, but I've been meaning to have a go at turning them into a convincing cast iron fence sometime. They might also second as pipes with that texture, but we're stuck with the shape of it being a fence, as I'm sure you know. I assume you mean using it as vertical pipes, or horizontal pipes supported on posts. I'll have a think about it when I can.
It'll be something for the future though. I cannot believe how much time I'm wasting on trying to get something both useful and convincing out of the spruce planks. Really tearing my hair out now!
I'm not wasting any more time on it after tonight, so you might all just have to put up with a flat cartoon cardboard looking spruce wood block. Gah!

Finished the small Coal & Tar Gasification Plant - compared to my other recent builds, very easy and straight forward. Plus, I had already built a coal tar gas works out of cardstock and plastic for a tabletop steampunk game - so I knew what I wanted it to look like.
There is a wonderful episode of Connections titled 'The Long Chain' - about how coal tar led, step by step, to such things as fabric dyes and modern agricultural equipment. In particular from the byproducts of the horrible, vile, poisonous sludge that was produced in these plants.

I believe the dye industry was also what led to much of modern chemistry and manufacturing on an industrial scale. If I remember my hazy history lessons on the topic.
I like the imaginative way you build, Auld Grump. You might like some of the new textures I've made for those industrial complexes you have in mind. Many thanks for showing the pics, it helps me to see out of the box how things might be improved texture-wise ...in the same way as it's necessary to get someone else to proof read an article or book.

Much closer to 100% of the byproducts of the process are now used - the main point then was gas for lighting.

Also wondering what that idea for the wither that you mentioned is.
