The above are just a few examples of what you could use the glowstone 'lantern' block for. Designs are limitless and I'm sure you will be able to think of many more uses in your builds! They all still need some refinement, but I thought I'd give you a quick look before I release the 1.4 version of my pack with the latest updates - hopefully this weekend.
I'm interested to know which you like best...my favourite so far is the 'Tiffany'. I will include the other designs on the terrain sheet as usual, so those amongst you who are brave, can pic and choose. If I come out with any more designs, I'll put them on the terrain.png sheet or upload pics.
Thanks for your patience - those of you who are still interested. :smile.gif:
Yes, Tiffany, closely followed by the Art Deco, but they're all great. I'm going to use the Tiffany block as wall- and ceilingllighting panels, and I'm hoping to use the Art Deco texture instead of Torches. :smile.gif: I like the Nether look, and expect to see Morlocs at every turn... Hmm, now there's an idea for Nether mobs with this texture pack.
Ha ha! Were you as scared of the Morlocks as me? Really put the fear in me as a kid! Thanks, Hoodwink. :smile.gif:
I'm quite fond of this texture pack. Lots of good design choices. Even the non steampunk elements. If you have any 32x32 textures you haven't used in the terrain.png file I'd love it if you made an optional image file that included them, for those of us who know how to cut and paste and customize texture packs. I'd love to see the nether converted entirely into some sort of steampunk style (and I know others might not).
I agree, I'd like the nether tiles now, even if you're not sure which ones you'll use. I'm using the riveted iron, sponge and the top of the diamond block* for now, but I'd love to use the real textures, they look great.
Oh, have you thought of maybe using oil/sludge for an alternate texture for slowsand? It fits for slowing you down, and it helps make sense of why the metal blocks catch fire forever: they're covered in oil. Of course, it'll be wierd that you can't light the actual oil blocks on fire, but it'll look great. I know it doesn't have as many uses as the bio-waste block you're using now, but it'd make a nice alternate.
* I switched the side for the top on the actual block, since it's only showing the top on all 6 sides for now.
I want my texture pack to enhance the look of the game, but not change the "gameplay". Substituting one block (Nether stone/Brightstone) for another (Steel/Lantern) is not acceptable for me. I understand why you did it, but as I only play in SMP, I need to have a pack which will give me approximately the same view/feeling that all the others players, regardless of the pack they use. I can't make a "Giant Steel Steampunk Machine" if others see only a crappy pile of random blocs
I think you can say this about any texture pack, really. For example, I was using Brown and Bloom a while ago, then switched to Doku's. Everything thing I had previously built looked terrible in Doku's. However, I liked the pack enough that I was willing to start a new world and build with a new theme.
I can understand that Glimmar's might be a little more extreme in this regard--considering the change of "purpose" with some of the textures--and that in multiplayer it might be confusing to other players without the pack. However, I don't think the changes are extreme enough to be completely indecipherable. Yes, your giant steel tower might look like a giant brimstone tower, but you can really say that about using anything but the default textures. In addition, it seems to me that this is not a new trend with the pack. From the earliest screenshots, we have jukeboxes next to forges next to iron blocks. They look perfectly natural with Glimmar's but, to someone without the pack, seem random at best.
Anyway, aesthetic doesn't seem to be a huge concern for most of the multiplayer servers I've seen. If your server is organized enough to build with a common theme, then you should probably all agree on a single texture pack. With the new in-game switcher, it's not difficult to switch back and forth between single and multiplayer, or even from server to server.
Don't worry folks. I'm hoping to get this out very, very soon now. I just have some of the other textures to tweak and some other things to include and test and then you shall have it. I'm really sorry I'm just about the last one to update the Nether textures!:sad.gif:
If you look back through my thread you'll see there's been lots of talk about basing things on H G Wells and Jules Verne, so things like the Morlocks may very well appear yet.
Yes, all the spare textures I've been working on will be included, if not on the terrain file, then I will begin to put together a texture and art file at the top of the thread that you can download and cut and paste to your hearts content. I'm still hoping that someone will put together the ultimate database of textures and Minecraft art that all can share in. Each artist being credited with the work they've done, but free to all. I've always thought that that is what makes Minecraft unique amongst games out there.
Thanks for your interest. Check back often! :smile.gif:
Whoa, I haven't been able to really look at this thread and your progress in a while and now that I got a chance - It all looks amazing! Especially the nether blocks, they are just what I need for my Arctic colony and all of it's factories, streets and underwater lights, to guide me from the underwater mines back to the surface. The original brightstone texture, just doesn't look too good and is somewhat hard to spot through ice, since it doesn't really 'stand out' - but with your textures (Especially the Tiffany design, which I like the most) it'll be much easier to spot through the ice as well as underwater.
Keep up the great work, and I'll be waiting for your next release :smile.gif:
Have just finished working on the ice texture. For some reason, the texture I originally did for this, was not what I intended to be in the pack, I don't know how it got there?!! I've never had a snow world, so I completely missed how horrible it looked. Hope the ice works ok for your world. If not PM me and let me know what needs changing about the ice texture.
I'd really like to see some pics of your Arctic colony if you use this texture pack. Sounds fantastic! Don't forget to stockpile up on the Netherstone. :smile.gif:
I know! Exciting isn't it! Such a little thing, but, assuming it's possible to retexture when I do the items, could be a nice little antique looking thing! Haven't tried it yet, would you believe. :biggrin.gif:
I will give a link to it in my next update. Just trying to get the colour and light levels right underwater and tinkering with the biome 'triangles', then I should be able to upload soon.
Thanks for letting us know though. :smile.gif:
@ elementface: Well credit for the idea should go to 'Necramar' pg. 25, but the textures here are mine! :biggrin.gif:
If you're familiar with the BiomeTerrainMod, there is possibility to associate your pack with some BiomeTerrain settings. I've made one for the Arid pack, but with yours I'd have more trouble figuring out a good idea for the typical terrain (yours is focused more on the crafted parts of the world rather than the natural.)
Maybe lowland England? In any case, throw me a bone and I might be able to roll you a fresh terrain type.
@ elementface: Well credit for the idea should go to 'Necramar' pg. 25, but the textures here are mine! :biggrin.gif:
Thank you from us both! :smile.gif:
Eh, I may have made the initial suggestion, but you managed to realize the idea in absolutely fantastic way! That Tiffany's texture made my eyes pop when I first saw the screenshot. Though I agree with most folks that the Art Deco texture looks more "natural", I've been walking around my world going, "Ohh, the Tiffany's texture would look good there...and there...and there..." Can't wait!
This texture pack looks awesome with the world that you have-- will you please PM me the your world files? If you don't want to, it's fine, I just wanted to play around in it because it looks so awesome.
Just a quicky before I put the finishing touches to the update and upload (hopefully today!).
@ RiverC: Many thanks for the offer. I'm currently working on some biome triangles myself, but I'm open to offers of better (I'm no great expert!). I'm not worried about trying to make it particularly 'steampunk' or English neccesarily, just more varied and in-keeping with the randomness of nature. If you can come up with something I could include as an alternative, it would add to the richness of what's on offer for the Steampunk theme! :smile.gif:
@ necramar: ...But you did have a cool idea, and coupled with some of the other ideas that came in that day, it jolted me in what I think is the right direction for this theme! So definately credit where it's due! :smile.gif: I look forward to seeing what everyone does with them. I think this pack should also have a sub-title of "Moody Lighting" as with my green torches and your lanterns, there's going to be a whole range of possibilities! :biggrin.gif: Just glad you shared the idea!
@ Happehwalrus: Thanks, mate! :smile.gif: Everythings an untidy mess in my world at the moment and when I'm mostly finished with the important things in this texture, I'm looking forward to diving in a having fun with my building - something I've not been able to do for more than a month!:sad.gif: Then I want to sort of present it with maps, names, perhaps a vid, etc. and some sort of back story, etc. Then you, and anyone else who's interested, can have a play in it. I'd also love to just keep expanding it for folks to wander around new areas. Just a dream! That's the beauty of Minecraft, lets people realise their dreams. No other game can do that.
I only play on my own private SMP server with friends. However, everyone is free to build what he wants, we don't have the same texture packs (many never installed a texture pack) and we don't even build on a specific theme.
So for a long time I was reluctant to use a texture pack at first. And now, I still select my texture packs to be very close to the original game and often ask others with others pack what they think of my buildings to be sure I've not strayed off the original look because of my texture pack.
But, as I said before, I don't have anything against Glimmar nor the choices he made with his pack. I wish him good luck with its fantastic textures. I simply states that this doesn't suit my own use.
Well, it's all good whatever we choose in the end. :smile.gif: Hope you'll come back and see what's been added from time to time. Happy building mate!
Is there a tool/mod that lets see your Mobs like in the MCSKinedit window, animated? asking cause of the zombiepig.png reskin ^^would be a better way then running from ghasts, deep drops etc. in the nether just to see how the skin looks ingame..
Not that I'm aware of. Would be nice if someone could make an editor. Like the character skins, we'd have a lot of different cool creatures running around Minecraft! :biggrin.gif: Wouldn't whoever made the character skin editor be able to modify it to accept each of the mob layouts?

I didn't mean to sound like I was attacking you or trying to argue you into using Glimmar's pack. Everyone, is, of course, free to use whatever texture pack they like. :smile.gif:
I was only saying, in my opinion, that:
a) Constructions built with texture packs that stick close to the original can still look weird/bad when viewed with the default textures (take Paintery or Quandry).
:cool.gif: Glimmar's pack isn't really heading in a new direction as much as it is realizing the basic premise set out in the first screenshots.
But, regardless of what I think, the choice is certainly still yours. I hope you find one that's better suited to your needs!
I, for one, will be drooling over my new lamps. >.>

Are the new nether textures out? I'd really love to apply this texture pack ASAP.
