I don't find your views insulting in the slightest, everyone is entitled to their opinions and everyone who's interested in the subject has their own idea of what Steampunk is, but I can't really agree with your definition of my pack as being closer to Dieselpunk than Steampunk.
Indeed, I can't agree with your argument that because the pack contains robots, wires and things with lights on, that it implies everything is therefore powered by electricity and so must be categorised as Dieselpunk. You are conveniently ignoring the many instances of steampower, brass cog-controlled textures that run through-out the pack and the fact that electricity, wires and many experiments in new forms of lighting were very much a feature of the late Victorian/Edwardian period. Some aspects of the pack might be considered more Dieselpunk than pure Steampunk, but in truth all genres and themes overlap and if one is going to be in someway original, that process of stretching the boundaries is absolutely necessary.
A number of textures and skins used in the pack are still 'stand-ins' that users have kindly 'donated' to the pack, and you may be confusing these with a more Dieselpunk style (skins like the temporary robot villagers, some of the squid, ghast, etc.) Though excellently realised and far better than the vanilla textures, they are not quite what I envisaged for my theme, which is mostly based on or inspired by the works of China Mieville, considered by some to be one of the foremost contemporary steampunk authors at work today.
All my own textures are absolutely inspired by an alternate Victorian or Edwardian world of arcane technology, which most definately was dabbling with electricity, even if it wasn't fully understood (one only needs to read H G Wells to confirm this), and over time (which I don't have much of at the mo') they will be replaced with artwork more appropriate to my vision. I should also mention the inventive work of Eddison as being a progenitor to literary steampunk, and my first thought whenever I think of him is one of lightbulbs, generators and lightning-esque Frankenstein experiments. I also think of films such as 'the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' and others that consist of ingenious wired-up glowing devices alongside brass cogs and boilers.
Electricity in China Mieville's stories is seen in an arcane/magical vein, and that's how I've tried to realise it in this pack. Mieville also views chemistry (or chimistry) as more akin to a mixture of alchemy, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Victorian scientific experiments and again my work in the pack has that in abundance. My only texture, eg. one that I've made myself that could possibly be considered more Dieselpunk than Steampunk in it's style, is my TNT which I've always felt was a little too modern looking but was a very early attempt at something different. Nowhere have I consciously used a petrol or diesel engine texture.
The 32x scale and constriction of working with block textures in Minecraft does make it somewhat difficult to represent the more decorative style associated with the Victorian period. And because I like to make the terrain textures as useful as possible for epic building, I tend to lean to a more utilitarian style of block that tiles well, but always with a Victorian industrial feel of cast iron, brick, hardwood and stone. My armor, though most of it is made up of placeholders based on the iron armor, is operated by 'chimical', 'arcane electrical' or 'steam/boiler' power, not combustion engine, and is temporarily represented by the ore colors for definition(eg. diamond, gold), therefore slightly confusingly modern looking.
There are brass cogs, steam and cast iron boilers aplenty in all the work I have so far completed. However, I have always believed Steampunk to be a broad church that incorporates all types of futuristic technology as envisaged by Victorian/Edwardian scientists and authors, not just limited to steampower or brass cog controlled contraptions.
I've always found it to be refreshing to be imaginative with a theme and not to be absolutely constricted to a literal definition of a title (even if I conciously chose the title to best convey what my theme is 'mostly' centered around). That way the genre grows rather than stagnates. If one takes the title 'Steam'-punk literally, and only used the science of steam powered technology it would be pretty limiting for the majority of today's best loved Steampunk authors and their fans, neither of which have limited themselves to just cogs and steam power. One only needs to search Google-images under the heading of Steampunk to see the infinite range of gadgets, artwork, constructions and fashion that consists of brass cogs and copper pipes and wires, glowing lights/valves and what appears to be a retro-Victorian (not a more modernish Dieselpunk) use of electricity.
I would admit my title is used in the general sense as I would not wish to be confined to any one of the many subgenres like Dieselpunk that collectively are referred to as Steampunk. Indeed, there are many aspects of Dieselpunk and other retro sci-fi subjects that, if the fancy took me, I would include in the pack, if I thought it helped me realise something better in my own Minecraft builds.
When all is said and done, we all have our own view of how things should look in an alternate Victorian world of science and architecture and this pack is just my quirky retro sci-fi world view. It is constrained of course by Minecraft's elements and blockiness, but it is, in my humble opinion, best labelled as Steampunk. I suppose, like China Mieville who often describes his work as 'weird fiction' rather than Steampunk, I'd similarly describe my work as 'weird textures', though best highlighted and categorised to the casual passerby as 'Steampunk'.
There are many others out there that qualify the use of primitive electrical devices and glowing lights in a Steampunk world, so in parting, here's a couple of quotes that might be of interest:
Definition Steampunk (noun) – A sub-genre of soft science fiction, typically set in an industrialized historical period, in which anachronistic technology is present.
"Steampunk is a genre which came into prominence during the 1980s and early 1990s and incorporates elements of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and speculative fiction. It involves a setting where steam power is widely used—whether in an alternate history such as Victorian era Britain or "Wild West"-era United States, or in a post-apocalyptic time —that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistic technology, or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art. This technology includes such fictional machines as those found in the works of H. G. Wells and Jules Verne, or the contemporary authors Philip Pullman, Scott Westerfeld and China Mieville." wiki
"Steampunk: An aesthetic movement based around the science fiction of a future that never happened. Recall, if you will, visions of the future that were written a hundred years ago or more. Think Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Mary Shelley, and the like — telling stories featuring technology that didn’t exist at the time, but might someday. Remember that they were writing with no idea of the microchip, or the internet, or (in some cases) the internal combustion engine. Therefore, in their versions of the future, the technology upon which society would eventually come to depend is driven largely by steam power or clockwork. Sometimes electricity is likewise invoked, but it’s often treated as quasi-magical due to the contemporary lack of understanding about how it behaved and what it could do...
...Steampunk could be considered a retro-futuristic neo-Victorian sensibility that is being embraced by fiction, music, games, and fashion. It is ornate and vibrant, and intricate. It believes that functional items can and should be beautiful."
Author Cherie Priest
Sincere good luck with your texture pack take on Steampunk, 13thMurder. It will be just as individual and quirky a world view as mine, and will of course satisfy the desires of those looking for something different. I dare say it will also be better realized than my humble offering, as you seem far more versed and considered in the subject matter than most.
actually, the mobs were overall what mostly gave me this impression. many, such as nether mobs, do indeed feel very steampunk to me, however it was things like villagers who originally got me thinking that way. but you are right of course. there must be overlaps, changes, and strictly thinking about it as one specific thing would achieve nothing more than stagnation.
i was however talking about dieslpunk in a more... loose definition. early 1900s technology's theoretical evolution, just as steampunk would be the victorian era's technology theoretically evolving. but when i write it out and see it like that... its hardly a difference all.
Thanks to Kahr, I got the animated texture for the railcraft rails to work!
Brilliant! Have you contacted ksheep to include it in the Mod Texture Support Pack? That's if you want to share it here. I look forward to seeing it in any event.
One question. Do you absolutely NEED MCPatcher or is it just for the HD animations? As in, could I use it in a stock MC without MCPatcher? I run the 32 bit MC BTW.
These days I would say yes, not because your game will crash using the pack if you don't use MC Patcher, more that there would be little point aesthetically, as so many features in the game would be missing or garbled with other textures, eg. no custom water, lava, fire or portal animation - only default, no animated terrain textures, no custom colors or HD clouds, no HD font so the lettering on my latest guis will not fit the graphics, fire on blocks where it shouldn't be, water in the nether and the list goes on.
I'd encourage you to at least try MC Patcher (if you've never done it before and you're worried, just backup your world saves). However, if you have mods installed you will need up to date backups of those, to reinstall after using MC Patcher, or drop them in MC Patcher's mod installer and do everything at once.
Looks SOO EPIC! but when I try to download it on any of the websites you have it on it won't let me cause I don't have an account! And I don't want one!
Glad you like, mariokid45. As far as I can ascertain, only 4shared requires membership. RapidShare and Box should just be straightforward downloads. I've tested both without being logged in and they don't require membership. I'm still waiting on my ISP and MediaFire to sort their differences. After using MediaFire for nearly two years without much of a hitch, last month my ISP decided to block access to MediaFire. According to MediaFire this has happened before for many users of TalkTalk.
As recommended a couple of pages back, I may give 'Minus' a try too.
Just popping in to say hello, as always the pack looks great. Hope things are going well for you and your family.
(btw how did that real life minecraft project go?)
Howdy, 42and19. Always glad to hear from you.
My wife is much better than she was, though life is nonetheless busy. Just ferrying kids back and forth to school and college and trying to keep on top of work is pretty draining.
Lol! The real life minecraft project kind of ground to a halt autumn of last year after my wife got sick, but I picked it up again this Easter...only to clear away leaf fall and other rubbish that kids and animals seem to have piled up on it. Basically my kids are like creepers! Once in the garden things just keep exploding all over the place!!
If there's anything worth showing I'll proudly upload a pic, but simply I have a small castle retaining wall, the foundations of a small wooden summer house with a level timber frame platform with crossbeams...great for outdoor squirrel concerts!
Real life Minecraft project? Oh the shed!(?) Yeah, how DID that go. You never told me D:<
Also loving all the updates! :3
Hi, imnumberfour.
Nice to see you around again and glad you like the updates. I'm still slowly working on another one, but it's competing with my shed and outdoor activities again!
One question though! Why are my bookshelves and glass textures still vanilla? Not sure what I've done wrong... Everything else is working, even the animated Chainsaw Diamond Axe... Just bookshelves and glass shows up default. :-\
ksheep explained what the problem is, and the solution is indeed a couple of pages back. Just turn the 'connected textures' option off in Optifine. I will include the necessary .png file Demi_Person kindly put together for me in the next update. Demi_Person's solution won't really make any difference to just switiching the option off as there is no point in having connected textures with my texture pack. I currently don't have bookcases, my windows are meant to be structural, not big wide sheets of glass, and my sandstone is already designed to be 'connected'.
Are there some retextures for Builcraft and Industrial Craft for this pack? If so can someone send them my way ? Sorry for the laziness, it's just that 416 pages is intimidating to search through. I blame Glimmar for being too popular but that's just me.
There is a Mod Compilation pack on the first post, not too far below the main download, in a spoiler marked as "Mods". I am currently working with a number of other volunteers to make some textures, and I believe we have most of BuildCraft and about a quarter of IndustrialCraft done so far, as well as various others (such as RailCraft, Weapons Mod, Clay Soldiers (might not be in the current download), and several others). Feel free to give it a try.
One question. Do you absolutely NEED MCPatcher or is it just for the HD animations? As in, could I use it in a stock MC without MCPatcher? I run the 32 bit MC BTW.
Not stock MC, that's for sure, for the reasons Glimmar already said. However, optifine does EVERYTHING MCPatcher does, except making mod installation easy, if you are dead set against it. However, MCPatcher makes life SO much easier. I even use it to install optifine So, all in all, you need either MCPatcher of Optifine to use this and other HD Textures. I personally recommend both (just uncheck all the default MCPatcher mods), and use patcher to handle your modding. Good luck!
Are you ever gonna use an useful and well-known uploading site or I am just gonna f*cking rip out my hair as to why a uploading site would limit banwidth?

He usually uses MediaFire, but due to some complications between MediaFire and his ISP, he's had to use other hosting sites. I believe there are currently 3 different sites hosting it, so if one doesn't work for you, just try the other.

...and no need to rip out hair or flair your temper. So long as it's not MediaFire, suggest another site and I'll give that a trial too. 'Box' gave no indication in it's signup that there would be a limit on it's bandwidth, so I'm as frustrated as you. I do the hardwork, get paid nothing, don't charge anything and waste more time trying new file-sharing sites - so if anyone's ripping hair out tonight it'll be me!
Box will be dropped as soon as I find another to try. As for useful and well-known, just move on to trying RapidShare...what's the problem there?
Thought about dropbox? Well, it has a limit you might reach fast. HOWEVER, What if I could make it so the file over dropbox is only a kilobyte, but anyone could download the whole thing? Don't shoot this down before hearing it out: torrents.
Yeah, I know they are normally connected with illegal software. HOWEVER, I have gotten several programs that people wrote and shared over torrents, not because they were illegal, but because torrents are simple. It's not always something illegal being sent over them. Even more so: it's simple to make a torrent. This page has info on it. I will gladly be one of the first to seed this if you do do so, and my internet connection is in the range of 23-32 mbps, and I have a computer with uptime almost 24/7. If nothing else, torrents are a way to get through until you find an actual upload site. But, hosting the .torrent over le dropbox would not be that bad a method as a backup (I do not recommend this as the actual thing because, well, it requires a program to download them) but, if all of them run to bandwidth limit, boom, no bandwidth limit on torrents.

Hey Glimmar, I've made a huge revision of your texture pack for my server, mind if I give it to my members? I will post the link here so you can see it. Everything is from your original, alternates, except for gold nugget, thats a gold coing I found and edited via google images (didn't have time to cite, sorry owner of it) I will post a link as soon as I finish touching up! If that's okay I mean...
Heya Glimmar. Been a huge fan of this topic for a long time (like since beta 1.3-1.5). Hope you find something new to distribute your pack on, the current ones you have chosen are pretty much 2 of the worst. Wishing you the best of luck with this pack.
~Cheers! Bai.

Probably not because he doesn't like if if people give out modified versions of his texture pack. he is worried it will lead to people trying to steal it.
I'm getting bad with not saying Ill be gone for a certain amount of time, I was on spring break and Xbox.
Sorry for those who missed me dearly and I don't want to talk to those who didn't notice I was gone. I want to say my hard drive that I store all my minecraft and texture related stuff is broken and I need to fix it soon. So for now I will not be making textures, sorry.
Also I saw that Glimmar recommended me to help with bdanziq with a skin request, and many thanks goes to you.
Wow, I go away for a bit and all sorts of stuff happens. Like you making it onto the front page. (Grats!)

Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
I am glad that this texture pack is on the home page, I completely forgot about it! This is a great texture pack and one of my most favorite, I like using it when I am in the mood for something different instead of the usual look of minecraft and midieval looking texture packs.
I really like the water and lava effects, some texture packs look really nice but their water texture looks awful. Also I like how the crafting bench has animations, I really like the look of it. The armor is also really cool looking, especially the leather armor. But really everything in this texture pack is awesome looking, I like the darker look of everything because for some reason brighter texture packs give me a headache.
Anyway thank you so much for making this Steampunk texture pack and keeping it up to date, I look forward to any tweaking or possibly any new texture packs that you may create.
Sorry to hear about your wife, but also glad she is better now!(?) Grats on the darkroom video! Although the commentator didnt seem to be aware he could have custom green light colouring...that irked me. Hahah, but nonetheless, its awesome you got featured by someone with such an awesome voice! Hope the shed gets built, i would love some pictures so I could stalk you and kidnap you to make textures in my name! :3
Many thanks, numberfour.
Yes, the darkroom vid was excellent and I'm very grateful to Sacheverell for the coverage, and why wasn't I born with that amazing voice, instead of my goblin croak. For someone who works so hard to promote Minecraft, he's a very personable guy to speak to.
I better get that shed built and properly defended with arcane technology. If you've ever watched Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, look out for the old grandpa hiding in his little outdoor privy...that'll be me, looking out fearfully for someone called Baron von Numberfour floating overhead with grappling hooks!!

Just consider doing it as a fail-safe
Many thanks for that suggestion, Zeeful234. I shall bear that in mind, but I'm still looking for something fairly easy for me to use that the majority of folk are also used to, which was MediaFire...curse TalkTalk!!
I did use DropBox, but got locked down within a couple of days for bandwidth abuse.
Same with Box! Gah!!
I've had enough of reviewing file-sharing sites and reading small print today.

Glad you like my stuff, ProjectRay and I'm happy enough with my texture pack being edited for personal use or offered privately to friends on servers with clear links back here and appropriate credit, but I don't allow the pack to be uploaded and offered for download on other threads or websites.
The reason? Simply because, having been around now for 2 years, I've seen it happen on a number of occasions, where users freely avail themselves of my material from defunct remix packs that I loaned material to. Then these enthusiastic folk, thinking they're doing fans of the remix a favour by re-launching the pack, conveniently forget to ask permission of the original artist (me) if it's ok to continue using my stuff and even credit the departed re-mixer for my efforts. I've even had users PM me accusing me of using the re-mixer's artwork!! There's nothing worse for ruining incentive than to have that happen. Imitation, for an artist, in that sense is definitely not flattery. It's like someone nicking your homework, getting all the credit and then the teacher putting you on detention because they think you copied!

Thanks, oneupbai. Glad you still like the pack and thanks for the encouragement.
Yep, it's a frustrating business, finding something to temporarily replace MediaFire, and a total distraction from working on new things for the pack. As I mentioned above, I've wasted all my free time today on checking out alternatives. I still like RapidFire as second best choice to MediaFire, though.
Glimmar, that was a great, and interesting, explanation of your views and inspirations for this wonderful texture pack, and steampunk in general. Even though I've been a fan of it for a long time I don't think I have really expressed it here and thanked you for making it.
And 13thMurder, I hope you don't see it as that I'm taking Glimmar's "side" or anything here by stepping into your discussion. I've followed your thread too and you seem to have a lot of unique and fascinating ideas that will be interesting to see how you develop further.
(In the debate of what steampunk is and isn't I can't help but post this little catchy tune, for anyone who hasn't seen it.)
Haha! That, kind sir, was one very entertaining vid. I'm not sure he'd be happy with my calling the pack Steampunk either!
Also, glad you didn't consider my views as being comprised of too much boulderdash and piffle! I'm well aware that once I get going I tend to drift off into the aether, much like Glimmar's Steampunk! Steampunk is more than big enough to satisfy my outlandish ideas, but I do try to use components in a way that looks believable rather than just decorative. I'm very much in agreement with the vid that you can't just stick cogs on as decoration and call something steampunk...well not in my world anyway.
I very much appreciate your taking the time to say thanks, dave11.

Well I hope you get that harddrive fixed...and I missed you. You might have to sacrifice that Xbox to the gremlin gods as an offering of good will if you want the PC/Mac to stay happy.
Wow, I go away for a bit and all sorts of stuff happens. Like you making it onto the front page. (Grats!)

Well, I'm 'gobsmacked' as they say around here in the UK. It's a great and delightful surprise to see you popping in, Fool. I've missed your technical and creative views on Minecraft. I hope you and yours are happy and well and look forward to you quickly catching up on things. Every time I look at my alts I always think of your 'Texture Mix Machine' and still prefer it as a solution to folk's need to edit things to their satisfaction. I can't quite cope with the complexities of the Minecraft Customiser and the amount of time I'd have to invest in managing it.
I noticed that the potions GUI is some sort of sketch. Is it a rough draft, or is it supposed to be a sketch?
ksheep is absolutely correct, it is a rough draft of what I might do when I finish it. Jottings at the time of some ideas I had. I knew at the time I didn't have time to finish it, but I didn't want to come back to it having forgotten where I was going with making it work as a kind of alchemical distillery.
I thought it would still be more fitting than the default potions GUI, even as a WIP.
I'm currently working on a new 'container' or chest gui whilst the inspiration takes me, but my ideas keep changing as I'm working! The current one is a little too low res and the grid is too busy and bright for some of my fiddly items.
I am glad that this texture pack is on the home page, I completely forgot about it! This is a great texture pack and one of my most favorite, I like using it when I am in the mood for something different instead of the usual look of minecraft and midieval looking texture packs.

You are very welcome, Nkagnito89. Comments like that are indeed a good incentive to keep churning new stuff out. I don't really work towards Minecraft updates. If I've a bit of spare time, then I'm always working on something new, Mojang update or not, as there is still much to do in replacing placeholders and improving ideas, and most certainly introducing new animations (the last just require a lot of free time to fully realize). So thanks again.
I really like the look of the wolves
Btw, has your name got something to do with spyro?
I always intended making more wolf skins, including natural looking ones, but there's more than enough in the rest of Minecraft for it to be a life's work just finishing my vision for it!
Spyro/Glimmar? I've never played that game, if that's what you're referring to, so I'd have to say no.
No, the name came from that little illustration I did years ago that's now serving as my avatar. That particular illustration was painted many years before the first Shrek movie came out, but he was going to be a character in a kid's story about a little delving goblin character. I just never got round to finishing it before Shrek surfaced. Then when I discovered Minecraft and started tinkering with textures, it was the first thing that sprang to mind when I needed an avatar pic.

ksheep explained what the problem is, and the solution is indeed a couple of pages back.
Many thanks, you kind people. I much appreciate your comments.
Not stock MC, that's for sure, for the reasons Glimmar already said. However, optifine does EVERYTHING MCPatcher does, except making mod installation easy, if you are dead set against it. However, MCPatcher makes life SO much easier. I even use it to install optifine
He usually uses MediaFire, but due to some complications between MediaFire and his ISP, he's had to use other hosting sites. I believe there are currently 3 different sites hosting it, so if one doesn't work for you, just try the other.

Curse Premium...and no need to rip out hair or flair your temper.
Just consider doing it as a fail-safe

Probably not because he doesn't like if if people give out modified versions of his texture pack. he is worried it will lead to people trying to steal it.
Best of wishes, -Green

Curse Premium*goes back to lurking while he attempts to catch up on things*
Also check me out on:
WordPress, Etsy, and Spore.
That is indeed a work in progress, with random sketchings and doodles of what Glimmar is thinking of adding… whenever he gets the time.

Curse PremiumMany thanks, numberfour.
Many thanks for that suggestion, Zeeful234.
Hope you understand, mate.
Thanks guys, I appreciate your time.
Well, I'm 'gobsmacked' as they say around here in the UK.
ksheep is absolutely correct, it is a rough draft of what I might do when I finish it.
