What block is this?
You say it's your take on an "iron-plated nether block" but as far as I know you left all the nether blocks default, so what is it?

The Nether blocks are only temporarily low res default, until I decide and finish off Steampunk replacements. My 'iron-plate' nether block, you ringed in red, will replace the 'Netherstone' block. Sorry for any confusion! :smile.gif:
Can't decide on what specific texture though - 'grey-rust free' to match the half-stone, this one above, or something else! I'm taking my mind off it for a while by working on the 'Slow Sand' block, which will also most likely be something completely different from the original to!
Glimmar i'm going to be honest with you. i do enjoy your pack and i find it one of the best looking packs, if not the best 32x32 pack on these forums. and i hope you don't take this the wrong way, but i have felt that your smoothstone (epstially next to the cobble) and the half blocks both felt a little out of place and a little bland bland.
i know you can do better, i mean look at all of your other blocks, furnaces, crafting boxes, and chests are simply amazing. the details make them a highlight for any home or steam punk contraption. the door make me feel like i'm stepping into some some made laboratory, or onto a submarine. your gold, iron, and diamond blocks; i look at them and i'm amazed at the detail, how do you do that? even the cobblestone, which initially i wasn't the biggest fan of, has grown on me. and then i look at your smooth stone, and i wonder how did the cobblestone come from that.
i mean the smoothstone is good on its own right, but it feels a little out of place. and the same could be said for the half steps, i think they could be a little fancier, and could have some more details. especially next to the new Iron plates which look very good, but my eye can't help but get drawn to that half block.
I hope my criticism was more constructive then destructive. and you don't halve to take my words as gods, but i hope you at least consider them with a grain of salt. other wise, i wait eagerly to see this pack completed.

Your comments are more than fine, Leon89. I'm never satsified with what i do, especially the basic landscape blocks. I've explained a few times my reasons for the rather plain stone block, as I see it as a kind of sandstone that we get in my part of the world. It's used in Victorian architecture all over the British Isles here, as capping stones, edging and along with red brick and cobble for many other things like factorys, bridges, etc. They're always large very smooth blocks of stone and appropriate to this theme's time period I think.
I do agree though, that there is always room for improvement, and when I've got further ahead with paintings, items, etc, I will return to the basic blocks and see what variations I can rustle up! I don't like the stone block to be too heavily textured though, or it becomes too heavily tiled in the landscape and I did want the smoothness of the stone to contrast with the cobblestone. Rest assured I'm always going to be looking for improvement, given the time, and always open to ideas. :smile.gif:

I actually use the plated version of your overworld iron for my iron blocks (The gears are nice, but distracting), and TBH the nether iron plates in those pictures are extremely hard to distinguish from regular iron plate.
May I suggest a possible alternative?
Have a look at the Destiny (From Stargate Universe)
The outer hull has this great rusted tone that would be an interesting candidate.

I've had a look, but can't find any rusted outer hull pics on Google. Any chance of a link to the image you have in mind?
One of my reasons for using plain rusty iron plate for the Netherstone block, is that it's cheaper to come by than the iron ore block, for those big constructions (without resorting to an editor). I like the simple texture in the pic above and think it's a good finish for steampunk stuff, but I'm open to suggestions still. Though I want to get these finalised soon for my next update. The next update should have the new Nether textures and a new sun, moon and underwater texture. Then I better get on with the Diving Helm interior view (pumpkinblur.png).
I'm thinking now of making the iron block into normal plated iron like you've done already (still with rivets), but perhaps less rusty (as so many mods and Minecraftians use the iron block for normal construction rather than as special one off pieces like the cogs texture). This also makes more sense if the iron, gold and diamond blocks are going to remain single face blocks. I will probably move the cogs to one of the painting slots later with other special gadgets.
Another thing, I've noticed that there's 3 textures for diamond, gold, and iron blocks, Yet I can only see the first one in game. I was going to use that turbine or fan for instance which is apparently another texture of the iron block. How exactly do I get those in game?
I finally got them to work, and I am immediately blown away. I'm never switching textures because, well, these have everything you could possibly need. My only gripe was that when I was looking through my inventory, I got the furnace and TNT mixed up. As soon as I tried to use the furnace, my house blew up. Though that probably was due to my inexperience with these textures. In any case, I also found a weird anomaly. There was something in my inventory that looked like two diamond circles in the top of the block. I don't know what it is, and I can't place it or use it in any real way. It's quite confusing, but it's not really a huge deal. *end of "Cool Story Bro" Cool Story* ANYWAY, I hope you get the iron block done. I need some of those for my industrial part of my city.

Just another little update to show what I've been experimenting with.
Having thought about some of the suggestions you guys have been making from radioactive waste to carpet, etc. This is one of my very early, quick attempts to make something that could have many uses in the upper world. I'm sure you're thinking I'm bonkers now, but having thought about it all day I was actually getting quite frustrated in the end! I couldn't decide whether to go for 'mud', bio-luminescent organisms with tentacles, another form of metal, even radioactive crystal things!! So why not have it all! :biggrin.gif:
Nether World Slow Sand or...wait for it...Pollution/Radioactive Waste/Bio-Luminescence/Pond Weed/Carpet/Bed Covers/Topiary/Exotic Marble/Etc.
I really want to get away from the image of trapped souls, not because i don't think it's a cool image...I just think it's a bit limiting to a hell or fantasy world setting, and I want my blocks to be as versatile as possible...same old story...why have a block that you can only use aesthetically for one type of setting when you can have a material that can have multiple uses. Still want it to look kind of natural, so that it can be used as a building material too! It's not too much to ask is it?
As I say, this is an early try, so don't judge it too harshly. It's shown to give you an idea of what could be.
Some replies:
@ Retrobleck: Before Notch temporarily disabled the three faces of the iron, gold and diamond blocks (I think to fix a problem with stone steps) all three faces could be seen in game. Now only the top texture in each material is now seen on all 6 faces of the block! So If you don't like the one I've chosen, try editing one of your choice into place, using Gimp or Photoshop, etc. Or pray Notch will give us the three faces back.
In any event I'm thinking of changing those faces in the future, when I get to work on the art file of paintings...see my reply to Jonathan_Kent above.
@ GSKashmir: Glad you got them to work! So sorry about the TNT mix-up. I guess my pack should come with some safety warnings!!:sad.gif:
Retrobleck Ninja'd me over what the two diamond things in your inventory are. That's a glitch still waiting to be fixed by xau and his 'MC Patcher programme'. The compass is also smaller than it would be if you were using 16x16 textures. Compass works, but you'll have to do without the watch for now! :sad.gif:
@ CAB00SE17: Airships...moving? That would be my absolute dream for Minecraft (that and big sailing ships and large submarines...little things really! :tongue.gif:). We can but dream! :biggrin.gif: At least we can make stationary versions!

he slowsand idea looks GREAT, and it looks very versatile. one problem: it's got a vine-ey look to it. that might dissapear if you make the two colors more similar, i.e making the brown stuff a dark green, or something like that. but you still deserve

Two thoughts there;
1; You are alot more of a long term thinker with this pack (thats a GOOD thing) I would never have thought of the nether stone that way, but now that you mention it thats an excellent selling point for making it similar to the riveted iron.
2; I may have a solution to your cog/gear thing.
If you go ahead and make the iron block into a building material instead of a one-off thing, then you need something else to fill in right?
My suggestion; split the paintings up 50/50.
Half as art, and half as gearboxes/control panels/lightboards/pipe junction boxes etc etc.
That way you get art, one-off decorative mechanical building pieces, and building iron.
All at one go.
Lastly; the hull picture I was thinking of;
Technically its a gate-seeder but still, its the most well lit hull-shot I can find at a seconds notice.
Oh, and before I forget; That slow sand is AWESOME.
Do NOT change it.
Its PERFECT!
I love versatile materials with many uses, and you NAILED it.
I was hoping folks would like the versatility over style! :biggrin.gif:
Yes, some work needed on the shading, but the viny texture is to make it tile better. The eye tends to follow the trail of the gaps between the green. Originally I was going for swirls of muddy water with pollution/pond weed that's how it ended up like that. Having a viny look might actually be another bonus use! Lol! :biggrin.gif:
Yes, still to do the Glow Stone. My ideas for that are to follow on from 'necramar's' idea on page 25 for a kind of lantern. I'm also going to try to make it look slightly like a stained glass window panel too! Wish me luck! :biggrin.gif: Hopefully this should fit in with the idea of the Nether being the remains of some vast underground civilisation!?
@ Jonathan_Kent: Thanks for the pic and the thoughts. Yep, that's the intention I had for the paintings, that's why I don't mind too much that the iron, gold, diamond blocks are currently broken. I may go with the idea of no actual 'art' paintings, but only the mechanical, pipe, gizmo things + posters, flag, etc. I can see myself actually making more stuff for the art file than it can contain, and just doing different 'sets' of things. perhaps even have a little library on the thread eventually, for people to pick and choose! Who knows, perhaps one day Notch might extend the number of painting slots we can use!
Slow sand looks AWESOME. But please, I'm begging you for the metal plate! That would be SO useful! Also, don't worry about the TNT thing. It was quite humorous.
I am in love with your mud. The only thing that would make that better is two scantily clad "Lab assistants" having a fight in it. >_> (I'll leave the choice of gender up to the viewer.)
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Tis far better to be a witty fool than a foolish wit.
After a long time of trying to get deep enough underwater for a decent submarine and trying various map editors for help I decided to abandon the nonbuilt ship and try instead for an underwater "sea lab" and see how that works instead since it can be connected to land easier.

Seriously, if you skinned the items, the mobs and etc...then this pack would become 100% more awesome than it already is.
I feel compelled to build a giant mech...so this netherstone update is going to help...
