Glimmar, have you heard about the texture artists' union?
I have, mate. :smile.gif:
I looked at it yesterday, but with the recently proposed forum changes and 1.8 looming it was one of those things I kind of decided to put on the back burner, before I went mad with too many changes. :sad.gif: What the admin did to Feathers kind of made me walk away with disgust too.
I need to join, but I'm just focusing on this flippin' update and going round in circles, before getting stuck into any other threads likely to raise my blood pressure. Lol!
I just noticed Feather's comment that you are both admins. In which case I will feel in good company joining and will do so as soon as the dust settles. I'd been meaning to ask what happened to the Texture Artist's Guild? Has that faded away now or just been put on hold?
A 'Union' sounds more like a force to be reckoned with. :smile.gif:

So now there are new glass panes as well? :blink.gif: Is this all to do with the new lighting?
That pic does seem to indicate the iron bars are sort of 2d then? So yes, some kind of railing that could also stack to make a large iron gate or scaffolding. Mmmm?
Yeah! You haven't heard about them? Hold on, lemme get a picture.
While this won't replace glass blocks, it will be available, and looks a lot more slick than what we have right now, and it looks like the Iron Bars use the same mechanics. Here's a video of someone playing with the Glass Panes (skip to 1:20).
I do believe that the edges of the glass panes are on the terrain sheet, just to the left of the bed and above the redstone. At least, I'm fairly certain that that's what it is. Should allow for some control over the edges of the glass.
Yeah! You haven't heard about them? Hold on, lemme get a picture...
That explains a lot. Yet kind of makes me want to wait to play before I commit to something. I'll add it to the growing list of things that need to be experienced, not just anticipated! :smile.gif: Thanks, Triskelli.

Now that's what that thin blue line is! Lol. I couldn't figure it at all, but knowing the huge chunks of info I've been missing, not surprising. Notch and Jeb's teasers are like decoding the Rosetta stone. :blink.gif:
Yo!
Can't wait for your pack for 1.8
When do you plan to start? :biggrin.gif:
P.S. Greatest pack ever \m/
P.S.S. Sorry for my English
whenever mc patcher gets updated mcpatcher reports it is compatible with 1.8. most of this pack will work as is, but you need the hd patch in MC 1.8 first. i just tried the 1.8 pre, with glimmars and rezcraft...almost playable until you get to the animated blocks
. grab the new jar, run mcpatcher on it, try the pack. it will be missing the new items, patience while glimmar gets his pixel magic warmed up :wink.gif:
The great thing about the pre-release is that texture pack makers can get to see the textures they make and refine the new textures before the actual release. Looking forward to whenever you get time to update the only texture pack I've ever used Glimmar. I absolutley love the pack! :biggrin.gif: Oh and I was wondering what you had in mind for the enderman mob. Could you share any initial textures with us if possible?

ya quite a few new things were added. i noticed in all the packs that certain trees were not taking the leaf graphics the packs normally have...entire forests show up with a totally different look from the normal trees we are used to...looks like quite a bit of work ahead to all the texture pack maintainers.
those ender pearls are an interesting item, wonder what theyll do with those. btw, the ender tactics are brilliant. they will teleport behind you if you attempt to engage...nasty little buggers =)
So far, I noticed a chest "redo". There's new chest .png files (small and large) in the items folder that (seems to me) cover the chest textures on the terrain.

So my animations still work then? :smile.gif:
Lol! My pixel magic needs a lot of warming up these days...what's left of it! :biggrin.gif:

Haha! Yeh, pre-release is great unless you're a cautious noob like me. I'm ashamed to say I haven't tried the pre-release! The little time I have is being concentrated on the obvious texture changes I can easily test in the current version (just substituting the wool textures) whilst still using those mods I've got used to, like flying and MoreItems. Does the 'creative mode' work in the pre-release?
I spent the last two days of free time working on a HD 'steam enderman' and it's nearly finished. I'm tempted to upload for feedback, but I want it to be a surprise. :smile.gif: It's dark, mechanical, steampunky, and looks appropriately scary (hopefully), but not as scary as Misa's!
Can anyone think of a better name? 'Embermen' would have been cool, but is already an Irish band, I've considered 'Steam Gollum', but that's a bit over used. If anyone can come up with a cool name that I like (or the majority vote on) I'll dedicate my enderman skin to them.

Lol. [nervous laugh] I can't see that anything has changed regarding the foliage from the terrain.png file. Do you think that's a Patcher or Notch problem?
And what the heck are 'ender pearls'? I can't find a graphic for those anywhere. Oh well, I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and try the pre-release. Goes against the grain for an oldie like me. :biggrin.gif:
So far, I noticed a chest "redo". There's new chest .png files (small and large) in the items folder that (seems to me) cover the chest textures on the terrain.
Yeh! And I just wasted another day of free time last week re-doing the chest on the terrain.png to fit the newlook chest!! Always pays to wait. It didn't occur to me it would be a new 'item' graphic. Gah!
I'll release something as quick as I can for you to try out, even if all the various elements aren't upgraded to steampunk.
Even though i HATE HATE HATE steampunk, this texturepack looks very well made.
Haha! I take that as a great compliment indeed. Thanks, mate. :smile.gif:
Just a little update on my experiences with Notch's pre-release 1.8 update:
I have to say I hope it's very pre-release, because I really didn't like the new lighting at all! Why have all the shadows turned brown inbetween lit areas? It's propbably just me, but everything seems a lot more pixelated in the distance...whereas before it was nice and smooth. Something that's very important to the way I build. :sad.gif:
It's also mucked up the grass and foliage .png files and edges of grass again for me. :sad.gif:
But what I really, really hate is what Notch has done to the chest. For the sake of a little dinky animation of the chest closing, in my opinion we've lost a another excellent block that could be built with in lots of imaginative ways. It now just appears too small and insignificant and obviously fits in with those who like to adventure, whilst cramping the style of those who like to build flights of fancy.
No more wall or floor storage units or the option of having a little variety in your wood panelling. I'm really disappointed over this, and it's tempered my enthusiasm at the moment. As far as I'm concerned this is one of those backward steps Minecraft occasionally takes. sadly all my wooden flying galleons will need completely redsigning now...their holds were lined with snug fitting small and large chests. All my warehouse walls are lined with stackable chests and now just look ridiculous. :dry.gif:
I hope there will be a future option to have a chest that fits seemlessly in with all the other blocks. This is obviously my personal opinion from the point of view of being a builder, not an adventurer. The clever thing about Minecraft was the way in which you can imaginatively stick 'blocks' together. The new chest just completely deviates from this rule.
Anyways, I'm off to do a spot of 'real' building now...muttering...stupid little chests! :dry.gif:
[edit] I guess I will just have to wait for the finished update before making a final assessment, but as it stands I'm disapointed about the detail in the distance. I've just compared it with the 1.7 version and there is an incredible difference! Perhaps it's to do with the current MC Patcher or perhaps my graphics just suck! :sad.gif:
And what the heck are 'ender pearls'? I can't find a graphic for those anywhere. Oh well, I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and try the pre-release. Goes against the grain for an oldie like me. :biggrin.gif:
they are dropped by endermen when they are killed. so far no use for them, but im pretty sure something will come up . im betting something like slime balls...useless until sticky pistons came out.
Don't worry about being slow on the updating the pack. I prefer that you take your time and not rush to get it out. That way it looks better when you do update it. :smile.gif: While it's not as big a deal for me, I do agree with you about the chest. It feels like it breaks a fundamental rule of minecraft. All blocks are cubes. I guess some are more cubic than others. As to the enderman name, how about steamerman? R.I.P block chests. :sad.gif:
they are dropped by endermen when they are killed. so far no use for them, but im pretty sure something will come up . im betting something like slime balls...useless until sticky pistons came out.
Thanks, MaudDib. I still haven't seen an Enderman yet...or should I say Steamerman (see below).
I've had a bit more of a play with the update since my rant above, and I'm beginning to warm to it, especially the new larger types of biome, they're just awesome. My grasscolor.png and foliagecolor.png are indeed a problem now. :sad.gif: I tried a couple of other packs and although there is some bad gradations of color change going on, none are as bad as mine. I can't understand what's going on though, because I no longer have any sharp changes of color in those png files. I changed back to Notch's and all was fine. :smile.gif:
Besides looking at the update through my old world with all it's glitches, when I first tried a new world I landed in the swamp and Notch's vines and hens were a bit extreme. On trying a new world I landed in a massive pine forest (and no snow...excellent!) with awesome cliffs and mountains around and the whole scene was quite stunning, along with the new lighting which I was quick to bemoan. Perhaps my old world just wasn't being rendered properly by the new engine.
The new glass panes and iron bars are way better than I thought. So many possibilities...but with great possibilities comes great responsibility...oops wrong costume!! I need to think on those two things and what it means for the old glass block:D
In the long run we've gained a lot more than we've lost. Any disappointment is my own fault for becoming so dependant on using chests as decoration in my world build and my slowness to accept change.

Thanks, avanguard. I appreciate the sympathy, especially with regard to the chests. As you probably know my atitude has always been about getting as much as possible out of a limited palette of blocks, so it goes against my Minecraft mentality to have a block become more limiting. That and the fact I'd wasted a day anticipating I'd need to change the chest graphic on the terrain.png sheet. My own silly fault though. :biggrin.gif:
There's a great deal more in the way of new graphics (not being a news hound, there's lots of hidden stuff I wasn't aware of) and it will take a little more time than I'd been thinking, so I'll probably release something before it's all done, then if anyone is still interested in my pack you'll be able to carry on. I'm still undecided about those giant funghi.
'Steamerman' is a good suggestion, thanks. I think I need to make a list of relevant words like: steam, gollum, etc, but somehow it's got to have that sinister ring to it that ends in 'man' to endorse it's terrifying appearance. Something to think about while I grumble over me graphics. Honestly, today has been one of those days when I look at my stuff and think it mostly looks crap!

I'm almost certain I saw you in there too, but without looking through the thread again I wouldn't argue with you over it! Lol!
