Just playing with your pack, and first I have to say: Love the water animation! And water in general, for that matter. I keep trying to make mine look as smooth and wet as yours, but I can never quite seem to do it...
I've never told you this before, but I think it's worth mentioning that I studied your pack extensively to learn how to shade various textures. So thanks for being awesome. :smile.gif:
PS: My only quibble with your pack is the brick. For me it just feels too orange, and the green-ish tint to the mortar makes it look harsh. I was looking through your alts and couldn't find a toned-down brick, so I was wondering if--when you have the time-- you could maybe look into making an alt brick?

Sort of like ken Ken did, I just kept an eye on your channel for it to pop up. He's always faster than me a bit (or a lot). Very awesome work my friend! I agree completely with your take on the water. Doesn't take away from the murkiness of it. The portal and fire are great too...but the lava is my favorite of all.:Diamond:
I'm a complete noob as regards YouTube, but I can see making Minecraft movies is a lot of fun and obviously yet another secret to Notch's success. He made it possible for everyone to easily show of their creative side, whether it be technical or artistic or simply plain awesome.
For some odd reason i though the fire would be green to match the sparks that come off p.s if i have my lava as the green will it still have the animation ? thanks if you answer
Do the green sparky things come off the fire? You know i can't remember now! The smoke that billows out is purposefully green tinged (as much as the hard-coded color handling allows) to represent chemical pollution. Just my love of the darker industrial side of steampunk.
If you've downloaded the 'green lava animation strips' on the previous page and installed in the zip file you should see that they do move just the same as the standard. Have fun, but mind the fumes! :biggrin.gif:
not bad Glimmar! me likey. I think the multi-layer lava animation is pretty cool, I need to look into that myself! lol
If I hadn't locked myself into my original lava texture by hours of work I would definately do it differently now. Same flowing/rippling action but less definition by way of the crusty up layer. Still, we learn a lot from our mistakes and not a lot from our acheivements. :smile.gif:
Well...it was multilayer suckiness at least :tongue.gif:*Edit - Just now looked at what your avatar said...I lol'd:D
Your lava and portal animations were amazing, Faust, especially as yours were 32x and I've rather cheated by sticking with 64x.
It's not from a position of finding them wanting in any way that I didn't use them, it's just I was determined to conquer my own inadequacies in animation and produce my own. I had to ride out the tide of folk asking for animated stuff to make me get off my behind and learn. I still stick by my arguement that excessive movement, especially in the water would ruin it for me over large areas and I'd rather have no movement at all if the opposite meant flashing patterns when trying to look at my latest build.
When I saw the lava, my eyes about popped out of my head. The water looks fantastic as well. Great work as always :smile.gif:. I can't wait to see it in game.By the way, I absolutely loved the music you had playing.
Thanks so much, torturran. Hope they look ok in game now.
The music is by 'Vernian Process' and the two tracks I used from their album 'Behold the Machine' are called 'The Last Express' and 'Into the Depths'. Josh who is a member of these forums and the lead vocalist, kindly offered all the tracks from the album to Glimmar's Steampunk for folk to play in the background and they have been very gracious in allowing us to use them in any YouTube vids. As a Steampunk band the music is perfect for this theme. I'm just disappointed with myself for not having used the music more often in vids, but now I'm getting a bit more used to this movie making process I'll certainly be putting them to good use.
There's a link in my OP (with info about Vernian Process) to download the tracks.
glimmar those animations look amazing! well done sir. this makes me want to do a lot of work on mine. We must sit down and have a tea and talk animations :smile.gif: looking forward to the update sir.
I like both those suggestions. :smile.gif: I'm a noob though regarding flicky movie things. You'd need to invite Faust and Grugsy over for a 'shindig' (of the party variety) as I count them the experts.
Looks like Notch and Co. are currently previewing 1.8 in PAX. Looks like there will be a number of new things to add, including:Enderman (mobs)Silverfish (mobs)Stone Brick (block)Mossy Stone Brick (block)Cracked Stone Brick (block)Iron Bars (block)Giant mushroom (two types, basically trees, so trunk and cap blocks for both)Cobweb (block)Melon (block)Cooked Chicken (item)Raw Chicken (item)Raw Beef (item)Steak (item)Three stages of bow (loose, slightly pulled back, fully pulled back)Wouldn't be surprised if there is other stuff as well. Looks like you'll have your work cut out for yourself. Luckily it isn't coming out yet, Notch and co. want to fix it up a bit after getting feedback.
That's a neat list, mate and does look to be some exciting stuff (along with a lot of work), but it makes me think more that this 1.8 update is the final big push before the game loses it's beta status. As I don't keep up with the latest news on Minecraft it may have already been mentioned.
I checked the forum news here and there seems to be a lot more as you alluded. New biomes and I think 'hunger' etc. I'm still not so keen on the mushroom trees as they looked a bit odd to me, but they might look better in the nether to brighten things up a bit down there. But what are these 'silverfish'? Are they just little fishes in the sea? If they are, I hope Notch considers making some little birds too and some random bird song would make the forests feel a little more 'alive'.
glimmar i loooooooooove the changes, it looks amazing.
Haha! Thanks, mate.
I'm sure you'll agree when i say it's a bit scarey uploading stuff, especially when you've been staring at your own work for weeks and then suddenly you look at it again and think, "well that looks a bit rubbish". I think yer all being kind and it really does look poo! :biggrin.gif:
Just playing with your pack, and first I have to say: Love the water animation! And water in general, for that matter. Haha, thanks mate. This section is a great melting pot of imagination, which is why it's such a shame when folks spoil it with rehash after rehash of the same old packs.
I can understand your quibble with the brick block. I do need to have another look at it, but it is based on the sort of bricks we see a lot of here in the industrial North West of England. The bricks really are that sort of orange colour and the mortar really is a grey/black from years of factory chimney smoke (there used to be hundreds of towering chimneys belching out smoke just within a three mile radius of where I grew up and the town is not even one of the big cities like Manchester or Birmingham) and the sides of some of those factories still standing have massive swaithes of rising damp causing the mortar and bricks to have a slimy mossy tinge. Lovely stuff! Think Wallace and Gromit...another great source of inspiration for me.
It's a little known fact that the brick texture I did is refined from an actual photograph I took deep in the cellar under my house. It tickles me no end that a few of my cellar bricks might be part of someone's epic fortress! :biggrin.gif:
But I totally agree I need to look at having more brick varieties. Though, like everything else with the block textures in this pack, they've got to look acceptable over massive areas, so any alts might look just as boring...you know I can't stand seeing unintentional patterns in constructions.
This is what i use. It's darker but not totally unorange:P
That's definately more like my cellar bricks! Except now I'm getting worried, cos' I keep hearing noises down there when everyone's in bed...it's not you Faust, is it!? :blink.gif:
Looks great, mate! The plans you have for the future sound good too!As for the problem with people using your textures without permission for their own pack, get some loyal fans to be guard hounds who roam the Texture Pack forum for you. :tongue.gif:
Glad you like, Lolligator. :smile.gif:
Me? Have fans? Never! :biggrin.gif:
I think admin frowns on folk chasing down rogue remixers. Sadly we hard pressed artists are expected to do our own freelance detective and 'thugee' work around here. :sad.gif:
I like to remain on good terms with people, but having your work redistributed and go uncredited always makes my eyes glaze over with a red mist! :dry.gif:
What I could really do with, is a huge steampunk gollum that just appears behind any unsuspecting texture pickpocket and taps them on the shoulder with the words, "SEEK PERMISSION FIRST".
ah yes, tea party with a group of us needs to happen. More texturing from me needs to happen also... such a mental block at the momemt. Perhaps now soccer is over I can knuckle down. I also need to mention that I am particularly fond of your tall grass. It was the starting inspiration for the two variants of my own. You are a fantastic pixel artist.
ALSO! loyal fans of glimmar unite! How is this pack not at 50+ rep yet. everyone needs to go the the OP and click the green plus on the bottom. alright fans, GO.
What? It's not all perfect as it is? :blink.gif: Lol! :biggrin.gif:
I meant "edit in your alts that I like better from the millions provided". I never have to do anything but copy/paste around 8 of the alts in though (clay from your alts, sandstone, diamond block...that kind of stuff). From when we built a ton on Pipeworld. Now I don't even have to add the animated stuff
That's definately more like my cellar bricks! Except now I'm getting worried, cos' I keep hearing noises down there when everyone's in bed...it's not you Faust, is it!? :blink.gif:
Yeah..it's the brick of yours on an alt sheet. Once I saw it...it's been in the pack ever since. Like I said...I never have to touch a pixel. Too many options to choose from. Like 31k Flavors....mmm ice cream
ALSO! loyal fans of glimmar unite! How is this pack not at 50+ rep yet. everyone needs to go the the OP and click the green plus on the bottom. alright fans, GO.
So, Glimmar, I heard that Notch is going to have the bow have three sprites. One for un-pulled, one for pulled, and one for pulled far. Well, I had some free time, and decided to make you this.
Lol! I said I wouldn't be on so much this week, but I keep getting rained off the cabin/summer house project and finding a bit of extra time in the evenings.
Glimmar, I am loving everything, just everything! How's the home project going? It amazes me how much time and effort you put into your astounding packs! You are simply an icon!
Much appreciate the compliment, imnumberfour. :smile.gif:
As regards the home project...I've got to the floor beam stage and realized I needed a brick column in the middle of the floor to give more support. I like a sprung wooden floor, but not one that behaves like a trampoline. Wouldn't it be great if we could build like Minecraft in the real world. :biggrin.gif: We'd need a bigger planet though.

Haha, a nice civilised group this is turning out to be!
I know what you mean about knuckling down. It's not that I don't have lots of ideas...it's the sitting down, starting and putting pen to pad that I find difficult. Being tired after a day of mixing sand and cement and lugging rocks around doesn't help. Also, knowing now how much is involved in making what seem to be small insignificant textures, it takes a lot of motivation to get going! I'm also painfully slow by comparison with everyone else on here.
I was never really happy with my 'tall grass', but I've lost touch with most of the excellent mods I was interested in. It's a fulltime job keeping up with all the amazing mods this game inspires. :smile.gif:
hehe...thanks. Though my response was more of a joke back to Grugs. I don't think of mine as bad...just a distant second to yours now.
No way a distant second, mate. Mine are no better than anyone else's, but it was a challenge I needed to get to grips with, or I might have just given up completely. However, I know my limitations and it's good to try and overcome them.
I so wish we were able to have a tea party :L But I don't think it would be considered normal for a 13 year old boy to be having a tea party with people older than him from the internet... especially a married man! :L
Lol! That's exactly what my youngest son says when it's dinner time! :tongue.gif:
So, Glimmar, I heard that Notch is going to have the bow have three sprites. One for un-pulled, one for pulled, and one for pulled far. Well, I had some free time, and decided to make you this. In case you wanted them :smile.gif:
Many thanks, Tlos. Those are awesome, I'll certainly be using them for the 1.8 update. It's one thing less to worry about and my compliments on being ahead of the game, so to speak!
Heya Glimm...you wanted to know iffin there was a thread to my RPG pack? There is now:PStankecraft RPGI have a "nod" to you in the form of my Glowstone. Rather proud of it...and happy I had you to be a great teacher.:Diamond: 2 U
Oooo! I shall pop over and annoy you for calling me a teacher. :biggrin.gif:
Glimmar, the new animations look great, really nice. Also, do you plan on releasing your world to the public? I'd love to take a tour.
Originally I started Glimmar's Steampunk as a way to bend the game to fit my world build and start a thread about my world, but the texture pack kind of took over and my world got left behind. Then my old world was further left behind with all of Notch's updates and, mined out and full of glitches, I decided to transfer all my assets to a new world and that's the stage it's at now. Lots of projects started and experiments for texture display purposes, but no epic gritty steampunk city that I'd originally envisaged.
So yes, one day I'd still like to release something, but at the moment it's just a bit of an embarrassing mish mash! :mellow.gif:

Okay I have to do this since everyone loves steampunk here (I assume I might be wrong but meh) this is a good site for steampunk things...corsets, jackets, goggles, accessories, guns, etc.
Vitual tea party via tinychat/skype/this thread :3 It will be great :wink.gif: :LBtw, I have made a 8x8 pack http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/580937-8x816x16-17x-microlite-wip/ and I enjoyed it so Much I was thinking of trying to do an 8x8 steampunk! Heres a 5 min mockup of a workbench side and top (grey things are meant to be gears -.-):(you will have to open it up in paint.net/gimp and zoom in...
It takes a lot of skill to squeeze enough detail out of 32x textures let alone 8x so having had a look at your pack you've done brilliantly!
Haha! I've never been one for using any of those new fangled tinychat/skype types of communication. I'm too slow and old fashioned for that sort of thing now. Lol! But I'll have one of those cakes your bringing here on the forum. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted with my summer house. Sorry it's not on a 'Crystal Palance' kind of scale! :biggrin.gif:
Glimmar your texture pack is always epic, probably the one i use 9 times out of 10, and seeing your world, makes it more epic! is there anywhere to download your world, I'm not a builder, i just play and I would love to customise it for all the steampunk mods I use, aswell as ones I'm planning :tongue.gif: pretty please?
Thanks, FreddJW. You are very kind. I'll point you at the same answer I gave someone just above your post. The state my world is in at the mo' it would be embarrassing...honestly.

Okay I have to do this since everyone loves steampunk here (I assume I might be wrong but meh) this is a good site for steampunk things...corsets, jackets, goggles, accessories, guns, etc. http://www.kinkyangel.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=345&sort=20a&page=1I don't work for it but it's still cool I'm gonna get some things...and it's UK based so you know its good.
Hah! Those look mighty fine. I'm not one for dressing up usually (except Halloween to frighten the kids away from the door!), but if I'd been 20 years younger I'd have been well in there, top hat and all. :blink.gif:
Quick Question, whats with the brightness, on your videos, everything seems to be normal lighting, fairly bright, but on my game its dark, like in a half lit cave. but all other texture packs are fine
This is really weird, FreddJW. Because the vids are way darker than how I see my texture pack on my monitor. Over the months I've upped the light levels bit by bit (as far as I'm happy with) so I'm at a loss really.
A few things could explain it:
Type of monitor, light levels in the room in which you play (even direction your monitor is facing). Even the height you sit in front of your monitor has a big effect and in that respect I'm probably to blame because I usually work pretty laid back with the monitor slightly above my eye level. I have my LED monitor at pretty high contrast, because I like black to look black, not grey as I've seen some happy with.
Also the texture pack is meant to be on the darker side to reflect the type of dark Victorian Steampunk I like which is gritty, smog filled and dank with a hint of horror along the lines of Victorian Sherlock Holmes, Jack the Ripper, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and especially now the stories of China Mieville...in my opinion the epitomy of my style and type of steampunk.
If you come from standard Minecraft or say Doku and John Smith you'll definately find my pack on the dark side, but I always find those a bit too bright and cartoony (not a bad thing I hasten to add) for my taste.
If you look at many of my textures side by side with other packs you'll see mine are higher contrast and darker and this does effect how dark the world is. Only being a humble artist I can assure you I've not messed with any coding...that stuff is scary magic to me. :blink.gif:
The 1.8 update might come to your rescue in that Notch is creating a new type of lighting which I believe is adjustable. In the meantime you could try the 'OptiFine' mod here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/249637-173-optifine-hd-g-fps-boost/ which amongst other things brightens the landscape and nighttime light levels. I've not used it myself, but it looks pretty amazing and many swear by it. :smile.gif:

I was never really happy with my 'tall grass', but I've lost touch with most of the excellent mods I was interested in. It's a fulltime job keeping up with all the amazing mods this game inspires. :smile.gif:
No way a distant second, mate. Mine are no better than anyone else's, but it was a challenge I needed to get to grips with, or I might have just given up completely. However, I know my limitations and it's good to try and overcome them.
Lol! That's exactly what my youngest son says when it's dinner time! :tongue.gif:
Many thanks, Tlos. Those are awesome, I'll certainly be using them for the 1.8 update. It's one thing less to worry about and my compliments on being ahead of the game, so to speak!
Thanks, HeeroZero. Still lots to do to bring it up to scratch, so hope you continue to follow whats happening. :smile.gif:
Oooo! I shall pop over and annoy you for calling me a teacher. :biggrin.gif:

Curse PremiumIt takes a lot of skill to squeeze enough detail out of 32x textures let alone 8x so having had a look at your pack you've done brilliantly!
Thanks, FreddJW. You are very kind. I'll point you at the same answer I gave someone just above your post. The state my world is in at the mo' it would be embarrassing...honestly.
Hah! Those look mighty fine. I'm not one for dressing up usually (except Halloween to frighten the kids away from the door!), but if I'd been 20 years younger I'd have been well in there, top hat and all. :blink.gif:
So long as it's like a Mad Hatter's Tea Party! :biggrin.gif:
:smile.gif:
