Personally, I'd add a small light inside, like one of these maybe?
The diving helm doesn't need to be so "Daleky" for lack of a better word, I'm just suggesting internal lights.
Mmm. I'll see what can be done. I agree it's got to be done in such a way that you feel your head is inside an enclosed space looking out. That claustrophobic feeling could be very atmospheric!
To me, the key would be all the space in-between the view-port and the edges of the image.
That space has to evoke a convincing illusion of curvature so as to re-enforce the idea that your head is inside this spherical thing....
...without taking up too much space in the image and making seeing out impossible or evoking too much curvature and thus breaking the illusion that way.
You sir sound very sensible and a worthy two cents indeed, and I love all those ideas, however, someone earlier in the thread mentioned about creepers being ideal for Steampunking due to their locomotion and the fizzing/hissing sound they make like a boiler overheating and exploding. Have a look back, they seem too good an opportunity to miss. In any event you are all doing a good job of persuading me of the merits of 'mob mechanization'. :biggrin.gif:
I verbally groaned when I saw that creeper airship, not because I didn't think it was absolutely hilarious and fantastic, but because I'd been thinking along similar lines and missed my opportunity! :sad.gif: Ideas are infinite though. I love Misa's Ghast so much and I often confuse the feel of H P Lovecrafts world and Steampunk together. I guess it's the dark cobblestone streets and Captain Nemo, etc. that does it. So I was also thinking along Cthulhu lines of a tentacled sea creature (wrong environment, height and temperature though!).
Many thanks for the input though.
I registered to say this is just a wicked texture set and to point out that keeping Spiders as Automata along with the Skelly would make sense that we would have Skelly's riding Spiders. Also, I don't know if keeping a balance is all that necessary, but I'm good with whatever Glimmar decides. Now if I can just alter time so I can go home, install this update and play...

We could do a diagonal very light gradient from transparent to very slightly darker, and add a curved white reflection to the upper quarter of that diagonal. It's difficult for me to explain, I might mock it up in a second. EDIT: SEE BOTTOM In the right place, that would look really good. However, it would be wrong most of the time, to the point where it would be better not being there.

Actually, a really neat effect would be to put a faint reflection of the minecrafter guy's face in the view port window.
Maybe, but out of my friends, here's the list of skins we use. (Actually, I'll keep it at three.)
Sam Fisher - Me
Vault Boy
Billy Mays
etc...
None of us use the default, and only one of us doesn't have a texture pack that changes the default. So while it'd be cool if you use the default, most people in my experience don't.
I just realized I'm being negative in both responses. Sorry about that.
EDIT: Terrible mockup of what I meant. Obviously the gradient should be hollowed out to appear circular, should be less drastic, should be a glassy blue or something, etc... The reflection looks terrible as well, but they both get my point across. Also, I'm not a fan of this idea, just posting how I would accomplish it if I had artistic skills.
Regarding the facial reflection and character skins, I use Optimus Prime for my character skin. As such, I wouldn't want a facial reflection in the viewport of the helmet. If I'm not using Optimus Prime, there's a few others I'd use, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Mario, Luigi, "Tree man", Roll (from Megaman Legends. I threw it together one day, and I haven't seen any other versions anywhere else), etc. I don't like the default character skin. It serves its purpose, but it's a little bland for my tastes, and the face looks terrible (like a clown put its flesh-colored makeup on wrong) to me. <-- Do Note! That is my opinion! As I said, it serves its purpose just fine, so no complaints there. I just don't like the way it looks.
As for the this pack, I thought I already mentioned it, but perhaps not. It's awesome. Easily one of my favorite texture packs. I'm going to be doing a lot of underwater building (as soon as I'm no longer lost in the cave underneath my proposed building site...), so I'll definitely work on some submarines. I love airships, so I might even put a few of those in my map as well. If I come up with anything pretty neat looking, I'll be sure to post some pictures using this pack. Thanks Glimmar! This pack is amazing! Mouser X over and out.
That glass curvature looks awesome!
Not what I meant, but still very good!
It needs a little toning down like you mentioned but its the right direction for sure.
I was actually referring mainly to the space in your overlays that is black.
Thats the part I'm mainly thinking about being important to the illusion of having a helmet on.
Yeah, I ignored the first sentence of the part I quoted. Whoops. That we can do with simple shadows.
And yeah, I get what you mean. If someone with actual skill took my image as a guide and fixed it up properly, as well as added the crossbeams from Sade1212's very nice overlay, my jaw would hit the ground like a cartoon.
I'm still not convinced it would look good all the time with the glass effects though...
Lots of really great suggestions there folks. As I mentioned on Telgar's thread (about diving helms) http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=80647 perhaps there should also be a few scratches/chips in the glass, reflections and, as has been suggested, an internal light . Also the appearance of dirt and smudges around the edge, but all these things would have to be unintrusive.
Reflection of your own face would only occur if an internal light was present, and this might dispel the illusion of claustrophobia so perhaps a bright light might be overpowering and not such a good idea. Any light falling on the interior should be very muted and only hint at any internal gadgetry. The glass visor needs to cover as large an area as possible without breaking the illusion of being enclosed.
This is a tricky one indeed, and I thought I'd be able to do this quickly. Aaargh! Brain overload!!
Sorry we're overloading you with suggestions. Maybe take it one bit at a time, each in a different layer, and see what you like and what you don't. So when you want to start, make the metal part of the helmet. Once you're satisfied with that, move on to the detailing of the metal. Maybe here you take a break and release it. Then do the dirt, scratches, grime, rust, etc...
loving the ideas for the pumpkin diving bell and that breathing apparatus mod, can't wait till you get diving bell made glimmar (and of course the nether textures). But no rush, you've put a ton of work into this already that I am more than enjoying. So for some more motivation for you to keep up the awesome work I thought I'd share 2 new pics.
I have decided to start building a steampunk inspired harbour town. Complete with canals, elevated railways, aerodrome and of course a harbour (maybe I'll build a submarine docked in it). So far it's seriously lacking as I'm still gathering materials, but here start.
This is a pic of the aerodrom (WIP) and my carrier docked up (sad to say I did use mcedit to move it from its previous location).
heres the harbour with warehouse and crane.
There's also a mountain in the back I plan on building my home on, and also possibly a smaller airship (as my personal airship). Can't wait to see what else you add glimmar so I can make this town even more awesome.

No this is all good.:smile.gif: I'd much rather be overloaded and have people interested, than no interest at all. I just meant that this subject of the diving helm is so brim full with potential I don't want to spoil it! :biggrin.gif:

malanius, 'Awesome' is an oft used word these days, but so very applicable here! There aren't enough superlatives to heap on this. I so love the boarding tower you've constructed here (assuming that's what it is behind the airship) and the dockside warehouses. I'm looking forward to seeing your ocean going vessels and any subs, etc. Wow, you just make me want to get stuck back into building in my own world.
Did you carve out the shape of the dock by hand and how did you manage to keep all the mobs away when you took those pics?
Look out for the mod that's being worked on with regard to dyed cloth, etc. It will be epic to be able to give the sides of airships appropriate emblems and designs. I'm looking forward to adding to the potential for creativity with the art file gadgets, etc.
If the bridge blocks get updated to allow water bridges, I have an idea on how to make a video of a "sinking" submersible. I'll use this texture pack and give you a link if I remember.

This sounds very intriguing! :ohmy.gif: Very grateful for any ideas to make this theme better!
I love all the toys that folk are making for Minecraft. It would be so upsetting if Notch were to offically turn his back on the HD texture artists and all those clever modders, when so many exciting things are being produced with his game. I fancy Notch is not that sort of person and loves the inventiveness that comes from his game as much as anyone else, but I can't help shivering at the thought. :sad.gif:
Anyways, I look forward to your inventiveness...sounds just the sort of thing I'll be interested in!
With a light inside, worthless as they are, you suddenly gain the ability to show the inside of the helmet. If there's no light inside, I expect the helmet shape to be black. I don't like that idea as much as a well "decorated" interior of the helmet.
Hi there. This texture pack is simply amazing. I really want to build things in the steam punk style, as from what I have seen it's BEAUTIFUL. But the only steampunk movie I have seen is Steam Boy... Does anyone have any suggestions as to what to watch? I refuse to watch it unless it has airships.
Oh, and I have also seen all the hoaoaoaou (However the hell you spell his name) Miyazaki's films.
Again, this is amazing.

Damn, I was going to suggest Miyazaki's Castle in the Sky... Well, there's Atlantis the Lost Empire, with an awesome submarine and drilling equipment. Treasure Planet too, but it's got a 60/40 steam and cyber blend. Alot of people count Brazil, by Terry Gilliam, but all of Gilliam's stuff has the same dreamlike aesthetic. Back to the Future III has Doc's rifle, workshop, and Time Train. Wild Wild West has a horrible plot, but some cool gadgets. The recent The Time Machine and Around the World in 80 Days remakes have a bit of interesting doodads created by the title characters. In fact, most versions of the stories by Jules Verne and H. G. A few I forgot off the top of my head: Van Helsing, 9, The Leauge of Extraodinary Gentlemen, Mutant Chronicles, and Sucker Punch.
Glimmar, i couldn't resist posting this since you mentioned all we need now is underwater sounds earlier. I actually put this together for your viewing so i am going to post it here in your thread. I don't know if this can actually be modded into the game or not. This may merely be an excercise in futility, though fun nonetheless. However if it can be modded somehow, the sound byte is all yours. Sorry about the lack of clanking metal. =)

I uploaded the sound file too. It's already been converted to .ogg in case some clever modder can use it. Get it here: Underwater_Sounds.ogg
my computer does not have a minecraft jar natives jinput lwjgl lwjgl_util minecraft and version none of which it will let me access it just says fail to load main class attributes from C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin
