It's beautiful! Absolutely glorious! The detail work on the chests and UI is superb, and that trick you did with a second layer over the redstone, marvelous.
Still with all the unanimously positive words I'm tossing around I do have a little criticism for you. This as my above statements were is a matter of opinion but I think the land textures for dirt, stone and water are a bit lacking. They feel too faded and the stone especially is hard to measure with. I feel as though using stronger colors and slightly more distinguished lines on some of the terrain would be an improvement.
Still it's certainty better than the original textures and I could just splice on grass and stone from another pack or make them myself.

Thanks TiberiousLex. :smile.gif:
If you use the pack for making massive structures, you'll understand why the landscape textures are the way they are. Give it some time and you might come to like those things that initially seem a bit lacking. :smile.gif:
In a nutshell, I don't like to see horrible patterning in the landscape or on the sides of massive structures. I find it breaks rather than enhances the realism of a scene...particularly when building on an epic scale. My belief is that repeating pattern should only ever be seen in those textures that obviously look man-made...cobble, panelling, wood, etc. never in nature. The more distinctive you make a texture, the less natural and believable it will look in the landscape from a distance. These are of course the way i see things, and I'm downright strange! :biggrin.gif:
I finally got round to using Fraps to film my 'Difference Engine'.
I've never really messed with redstone wiring, but with the new pistons there seemed no good reason not to have a go and try to come up with some type of Steampunk engine I could use for factories, ships and dirigibles, etc.
Not knowing anything about circuits like Mauddib and the like, I didn't know what fun it could still be...so this little Youtube movie is the result of my play session. Many of you will understand how it randomly fires...I simply arrived at this by accident, looking to make an interesting prop, nothing more. You can imagine why the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end building this late at night, all nice and quiet as usual in my silent halls...when suddenly it sprang to life with a will of it's own!!
The vid is not up to a Gestankfaust standard and is darker than it seemed when filming, but i think it's clear enough for you to see there's no tricks behind the scenes, no hidden pressure plates being activated by mobs or other players, it just fires totally randomly. Sometimes nothing happens for quiet a while, then there are times when it looks like it's going to explode. You'll have to trust my honesty on this, because I really know nothing but the very basics of linking up repeaters and redstone wiring. I'm not sure i want to know, because I much prefer the mystery of it all. :smile.gif:
Observant one's amongst you will notice my new experimental redstone piping seen here more clearly in the following pics:
If you want to give it a go, just copy this terrain sheet to your desktop and drop it into my texture pack (rename to 'terrain' first), replacing the one in the pack. I've changed my glowstone to one of the alternatives I made after Faust showed me what it looked like in use. :smile.gif:
Here's another variation on the redstone wiring/pipe, only this time it's more of a coppery color.
Very cool redstone indeed. I too will be using the copper version...cause that's how I roll (and I don't even know what that means). Your redstone (and mine because of the inspiration) makes you actually want to see it. Not hide it under ground like it was a sin.

I Hear torches burning out... If that happens too much they sometimes pop off or break. Otherwise very good; except a bit frantic, I don't think I know of any steam machine that works so fast!
wow that fortress build is incredible. your difference engine is amazing. i might have to play with that some time..i normally build things that do a specific function, but hardly do i ever go and do something random like that. I love that new redstone graphic..gonna try that in a minute.
in the meantime, the seeds forum caught my eye. interesting stuff there, some people have posted map seeds that generate incredibly wild mountains with insane overhangs. on a whim, i tried using the name 'Glimmar' as a seed..and i get this:
if you start that map, hit f3, and fly (its very far from where i spawned) to x: 920 z: -170
along the way you will see other mountains almost like the ones in the pictures.
Well, when your pack is famous, as I'm sure it will be and I'm retired and fancy free I'll be able to post and say to everyone, "I remember when dorianGREY used to post in my thread. Oh yes, them were the days!" :biggrin.gif:
I'll pop over and see how yer doing as often as I can, and I'll try to be civil at all times! :tongue.gif:
OH that sounds delightful, tea and biscuits will be on offer.
having a bit of fun with the world edit tools in the modpack i use:
why have one cpu..when you can have 2?!
actually im moving it so i can add more stuff around it, planning on rigging up some more led displays and make this thing show what the alu is doing as you toggle things on and off, but looked impressive to see both there at the same time :wink.gif:
hmm, maybe I will get fraps so I can record my 4x64 diamond bridge. Looks nice with your TP.
I'd experimented a little with the demo version earlier this year and was impressed with it's ease and quality, but your limited to 30 sec clips and a logo I think. Wanting to show off my little 'engine' like an excited schoolboy showing what he did at school, made me purchase the full program when I found my PayPal account had finally accepted my credit card! Lol. :biggrin.gif:
It's a doddle to use, and using Windows Movie Maker made it easy to upload directly to YouTube at the same time as saving a copy on my harddrive. Providing Notch doesn't create too much work in this next update, I think having the facility to film stuff is quite motivating in the sense of wanting to build more stuff.
Looks great Glimmar, I'm using the copper variant, it gets pretty good with the colors.
Thanks for the feedback, Sk3l3tonBoy5. :smile.gif:
I just couldn't decide which I liked best of the two. In some situations I preferred the look of the brass version in complicated arrangements, but thought the copper one looked better for straight runs.
The new redstone looks nice. I'll have to try it out. Also, that machine looks kinda interesting. I might take a stab at recreating it.EDIT: In other news, I just came across this, and thought I should share it. Hope it helps the flow of creativity.
I hope you'll show some pics if you do make some 'engines', I'm quite fascinated now at the potential and you understand the principals involved using redstone, unlike yours truly (me.
Yes, those locks are just beautiful...the innards even more so. I suppose that says a lot about the sort of people who like steampunk! Lol :biggrin.gif:

Oooo! I like the sound of the vid. Did I coin the phrase 'The Dark Ones', I can't remember? Haha! For too long Minecraft has been bright and cheerful...that is...until the Dark Ones appeared. [spoken in a deep movie trailer type voice] :biggrin.gif:
Incidentally I watched 'Jonah Hex' for the first time the other night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I wasn't disappointed, except in John Malkovich (whose work I normally love) and the climax.
Your point about the redstone not being hidden away is spot on. Considering how much can be done graphically and in game with that stuff, it really does seem a shame to hide it away, but then anyone who likes dark atmospheric machine-like themes is going to want to see as much gadgety stuff as possible. I have to keep reminding myself that the majority don't see it that way though. :sad.gif:
I Hear torches burning out... If that happens too much they sometimes pop off or break. Otherwise very good; except a bit frantic, I don't think I know of any steam machine that works so fast!
Shows how much I know...I didn't know redstone torches could burn out!! That's pretty cool (or hot). Is that the hissing sound then? I just couldn't understand where that noise was coming from, but absolutely loved it. It's the most steampunky noise I've heard so far in Minecraft. I'm going to have to look further into this matter. :smile.gif:
As regards frantic machinary, I'm old enough to remember being taken round a real working cotton mill here in the North West (UK) and believe me, hundreds of looms (looking somewhat like MaudDib's CPU project) clattering away at top speed, was vastly louder and more frantic than my little toy gizmo. I'm still having nightmares. Lol! :biggrin.gif:
I'm already imagining a vast factory with row upon row of these little babies hammering away. Except if I've got to keep going round replacing burned out redstone valves, I better rethink!! :blink.gif:
It's been running non-stop since last week, so if they haven't burned out yet, am I safe?
It's been running non-stop since last week, so if they haven't burned out yet, am I safe?
yes. redstone torches are designed to do several things: provide power, act as an inverter (if it recieves power, it turns off. if it loses power, it turns on), and is used for all manner of clocking mechanisms. and there in lies the rub...they can be switched on or off at a decent clip, but go too fast, and they 'burn out'. this is the hiss you hear. this is temporary tho..they will reset after a few seconds and will resume what they were doing before. to illustrate, put a block on the ground. hang a redstone torch on one side, hang a switch on the other. flip that switch on and off fast enough and you will succeed in burning out that torch. I've yet to see a torch 'drop' from excessive burn outs, so I'm not sure where that came from.
Looks like the next update wont be until late August or early September, so you'll have plenty of time to mess around with other projects until then. Seems that Notch and co are going to be demonstrating it at PAX, which is August 26-28, and they will use that to get feedback and improve before officially releasing it.

"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to...."
Hey guys, I wanted to let you all know, we released a new track recently. If any of you plan on doing some dark carnival/circus themed stuff, it would be perfect background music.
wow that fortress build is incredible. your difference engine is amazing. i might have to play with that some time..i normally build things that do a specific function, but hardly do i ever go and do something random like that.

Glad you like my little 'machine', but it pales into insignificance by comparison with your constructs, mate. :smile.gif:
I once tried that seed, not that I'm conceited or anything (:biggrin.gif:) but I don't remember it being as good as that...perhaps I spelt it differently. I tried it again and it really did look much better this time. I should have set up camp in my namesake world rather than the one I eventually settled on...calling it 'Glimmar's World' would have been quite appropriate. :smile.gif:
Hi Glimmar,I've recently come back to using this texture pack after a much too long hiatus. I've been making small structures, when I noticed that the lava isn't animated. Is it meant to be like this at the moment, or have I gone wrong with the patcher somewhere?Anyway, Keep up the astounding work and I hope to eventually have something steampunkish of a decent quality to show sometime soon.
It should move, but it's sadly not animated yet. Sorry to disappoint. :sad.gif:
I have an animated version in the 'extras' download kindly made by Gestankfaust based on my lava texture that you could use in the meantime until I finish my own experiments. :smile.gif:
having a bit of fun with the world edit tools in the modpack i use:why have one cpu..when you can have 2?!actually im moving it so i can add more stuff around it, planning on rigging up some more led displays and make this thing show what the alu is doing as you toggle things on and off, but looked impressive to see both there at the same time :wink.gif:
Now I know that's a functional construct, MaudDib, but to me it also looks like the most amazing form of conceptual art too, or some awe-inspring alien space craft. In my opinion creations like that transcend their functionality and become art. They 'do' something, but they are also simply beautiful to look at. Fantastic!!
Just popping by again! Has anyone else tried the seed "steampunk"? Its incredible! Anyone that hasn't really needs to!
I tried that one again, and again it was much better than I remember before. I'm sure Notch must have tweaked things inbetween. So Glimmar's Steampunk, if anything else at least creates two cool worlds, even if the textures are rubbish! :biggrin.gif:
yes. redstone torches are designed to do several things: provide power, act as an inverter (if it recieves power, it turns off. if it loses power, it turns on), and is used for all manner of clocking mechanisms. and there in lies the rub...they can be switched on or off at a decent clip, but go too fast, and they 'burn out'. this is the hiss you hear. this is temporary tho..they will reset after a few seconds and will resume what they were doing before. to illustrate, put a block on the ground. hang a redstone torch on one side, hang a switch on the other. flip that switch on and off fast enough and you will succeed in burning out that torch. I've learned a lot from that...infact 100% more than I knew before and in a bite size I can handle. So that explains what I think of in my machine as being random...it's just the torches burning out, resetting and going berserk again. I still like the fact it's possible to create a hissing sound and rather like the idea of a temperamental engine. Thanks, mate.

Hooray, I feel like giving Notch a hug! :blink.gif:
Sorry folks. I love to see new stuff like everyone else, but the UK school hols are a very busy time for me along with family, etc. So I might get a chance to slip away for a break and not let you down with the update. Also I like to build and have fun too, so I might get a chance to do some more useless machines and perhaps finish off a few more things to make Glimmar's Steampunk a little more my own work! :smile.gif:
I remember you saying you were working on that theme. It would certainly be nice to have a sinister carnival somewhere in my city, and I could introduce one or two strange carnival-like rides. Having just found two new exciting things to do with Fraps and redstone I really need to at long last do what i always intended and that's put your music to good use. Hope I eventually do it some justice. :smile.gif:
Once again, many thanks for your generosity...please thank the rest of the band for me.
Can you make more IndustrialCraft compatible textures please?
I'd love to, I really would, but there's still much to do to finish this pack first and I don't have much time at the moment. I'm truly sorry, NeatMonster, as it's an awesome mod and lends itself to this theme so well.
The range of mods that could be applied to this theme is quite mind boggling really, but it makes me sad that I'll probably never have time to cover even the most obvious one's to my satisfaction. I don't even get chance to try the most interesting ones out and see what's possible, which is a pre-requisite for doing satisfactory textures. :sad.gif:

The range of mods that could be applied to this theme is quite mind boggling really, but it makes me sad that I'll probably never have time to cover even the most obvious one's to my satisfaction. I don't even get chance to try the most interesting ones out and see what's possible, which is a pre-requisite for doing satisfactory textures. :sad.gif:
