"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to...."
I'm there as well though I haven't updated my packs there recently.(Bad me, no cookie!) In other news, I have the very first Alpha version of my new stand alone texture mixer done. It's very crude and doesn't support HD textures yet though. (That's one of the next things on my list.) I also only have the windows build up as I am having some issues with my Linux machine. (I think the HD might be on it's way out.) For more info, either visit the thread for my web-based one or go to my blog at http://blog.thefool76.com (I plan on giving it it's own thread once I get HD support in and make it a tad more user-friendly.)
It's funny, but lack of time aside, I still don't feel my pack is complete enough to call my own and offer it outside the Minecraft Forums.
Oooo! :blink.gif: I shall have to have a look at your new Texture Mixer Machine. It will be awesome to be able to offer or link to it when it's possible to do HD mixing. Thanks for the time your putting into it, Fool76. It will be an awesome piece of kit to accompany Minecraft and really aught to be the sort of thing included in the options menu of the game itself if Notch ever decides to officially support HD. A lot of if's I know, but it's nice to dream. :smile.gif:

We get lots of US COP documentary style programmes over here along with fly-on-the-wall UK police programmes...they're never ending and always annoyingly eye-catching! Lol!
I hope everything ended amicably between you and your brother, unless I'm reading things the wrong way.
I'm very intrigued by this mystery object you found!
Anyways, can't think of a nice link-in line so...
New Wool and Iron Bound Wood
Wood now has more texture to it, but tiles better over large areas due to the addition of 'iron bands'. I've found this arrangement to work really well for both small structures like, steps, chairs, platforms and the like and especially for larger constructions like fortress gates, ships, bridges and other more mysterious inventions! The new trapdoor was made to compliment this new type of wood and to better work with the new glowstone texture as 'shutters' etc.
The wool was going to be a nice plain texture without the 'stitching' at the edges, to allow for wider use and I spent quite a bit of time on perfecting seemless tiling...and this set will still be available in my new 'Alternates no. 3' sheet, but by a fluke of experimentation, I think I arrived at something much more exciting, which I've decided to make the default.
This set of wool textures I've designed with a slight curve and framework of retaining 'cord/wire and link'(?) for balloon, sail and as you'll eventually see...structural use. Yet, strangely I've found it still works when used as a floor material. It might not be to everyone's taste, like a lot of things about this pack (lol), but when you've had a first look at the pics below, I will post more to show off the uses i've put the new textures too, to hopefully persuade you of their worth. :smile.gif:
Iron Bound Timber Ship. Notice the use of the new glowstone lantern as window and trapdoor as shutters or alternative window frames. Oh, and a little bit of the plain wool that ended up on the new alternates sheet 3 (for rolled up sails). See the more exotic wool further down.
Looking good. Can't wait to get my hands on the new textures. Hopefully I'll have more time to play in a bit, RL is really dragging me down at the moment.

Are you coming to the end of exams? Both my sons have just finished theirs, one at college and one still at school and they were seriously flagging by the end. Wish you well, mate, and that goes for anyone looking in also going through it. I still have nightmares regarding finishing work and papers, etc... an eternal fear of not being ready...perhaps why I dread Minecraft update time so much.
It reminds me too much of final college days. Lol! :blink.gif: After which I was daft enough to go into the Arts Management side of things, organising new exhibitions every month and that gave me the same fear of deadlines. Great for an adrenaline rush and satisfaction of a job done (or not!), but always a feeling of never being ready! Hold on...
...thought I was visiting my psychiatrist then. :laugh.gif:
The Glimmar's New 64x64 Steampunk Minecraft Character
If you've downloaded the current pack, you'll find the character skin, called 'char.png', in the 'mob' folder. Unfortunately, because Notch doesn't support HD skins when playing online you won't see it unless you play offline! That's the same for all HD 'char' skins, you'll only ever get to see the HD versions if your not playing multiplayer or signed in to the Minecraft server.
Incidentally in my next update, there will be a new character skin similar to this, but I had to alter the face (and my existing leather armor) so that all my armors could be worn by any character...my HD one or 16x versions. The one above doesn't facially match up with Notch's Steve character which everyone else's skins are based on. Just a stupid oversight on my part when I created my manic alter-ego above, but soon fixed. No longer as disturbingly handsome as the chap you see here, but a little more cute perhaps. :tongue.gif:

Nah, not exams. Finished those last month. No, I'm working on a research project at the moment. Currently up in the mountains of Utah, working at a university up here for the summer. The project is in the field of Computer Vision, so… yeah, fun. Lots of reading, lots of coding. Still trying to get used to the climate and the altitude (a bit different from that of Texas).

Oh, yes! Silly me, I remember now you saying you were packing to go away! 'Computer Vision', sounds interesting...not something you can tie in with Minecraft then! :laugh.gif: I imagine it's a lot cooler by comparison with Texas...not that I've been to either. :smile.gif:

So far, most of what I've been doing in the project is image recognition, which I MIGHT be able to tie into Minecraft, but not very well… unless it's to take an image and convert it into a Minecraft schematic, perhaps? Still, not what the project is focusing on.
As for the weather, yeah, it's a bit cooler. Texas has been breaking 100º fairly consistently the past few weeks, and Utah was snowing a couple weeks ago. It's just now warm enough to go the whole day without a sweater.
EDIT: According to the Wiki, there WILL be more than just the pistons. 1.7 has been dubbed "Jeb's update" (since most of the items are things that Jeb has been working on). These include:
Pistons: both normal and sticky (sticky made with slimeballs)
Shears: used to shear sheep and obtain leaf blocks
TNT will only be ignitable with fire or redstone
Fences will be able to be placed on other fences
Torches will be able to be placed on fences
And… bug fixes
Going to try to verify some of these, as I haven't seen anything according to Notch, but Jeb may have said something somewhere. Apparently Jeb verified these things in an IRC chat earlier today.
Looks like the only things you'll have to worry about adding are the two types of pistons and the shears. Everything else is just gameplay issues.

Wow! I think I like everything about the next update. I love the idea of shears and 'hedge' blocks and the changes to fences along with the pistons...that's actually quite a lot to play and create with.
That's a fantastic write up/spotlight. Thanks very much...I truly appreciate that, mate, and you're doing a good job of persuading me to get my act together and do something about joining Planet Minecraft. :smile.gif:
It was good to see your old avatar again though and it set me wondering why you or anyone else hasn't yet made a Monty Python texture pack. There's probably only you and me old enough to remember what it was about or still find it funny, but a tongue in cheek fantasy pack with hilarious MP paintings would make for a nice change. Some of the mobs would be fun. :biggrin.gif:
Wow, at first I wasn't too sure about the new wool, but after I saw the airship I realised the many, many awesome applications of this style! :biggrin.gif:
I love that wood too. It could make some really spooky dungeons houses!
Great work as always, Glim!
I think I'm still on Gimp 2.6...hang on let me check...yep, v 2.6.11. If you're waiting for 2.8, does that mean there is a 2.7 around? :unsure.gif:
If you're on Windows [: which I'm not, unfortunately. I'm not sure if you have to compile it or there's a script to do it in the download or something, but it's worth it if you get it working :tongue.gif: it's not labeled as stable, but I hear it's pretty safe to use. It's has some features like Single window mode and stuff.

I agree, I wasn't too sure at first, and new smooth alternatives will be available, but once I started building with the 'gas-filled' wool blocks, it was great fun.
'Esoteric Machines and their Textures'
Below are pics of a couple of quick builds to show off the new wool, furnace, wood and glowstone textures. It's been ages since I had a build with my own textures, felt inspired and a strange compulsion to populate my world with all sorts of unusual machines! If you folk come up with something that looks like it could walk, fly, roll, sail or travel into the future, I'd love to see it.
Small Powered Dirigible. showing new wool and dispenser texture and lots of brass work. The glowstone depicted here is just another alternative texture amongst many others I've been working on.
Esoteric Flying Machine. showing new wool, dispenser and lots of cast iron and brass. Oh and pig spawners make very convincing gyroscopic type machinary at the right distance. :smile.gif:
Steampunk Flying Machines.
Ships Old and New. New wool sails furled.
Grounded in the Storm Rain always makes stuff look atmospheric...well...in a steampunk way! lol. :biggrin.gif:
I'm really liking the new blocks Glimmar :smile.gif: My apologies for not being able to stop in often, I've been busy with my own pack. Finally released version 1!
