"New improved lighting — day/night cycles will not require chunk updates. Lighting will be updated via a texture, whose coordinates are the block's sky light and block light levels."Basically, he's revamping how the sun and moon light things, and giving torches a totally different feel. The night will have a blue-ish tinge, and the lanterns will give a warm yellow-ish glow.
It probably won't make any difference in texture packs. Notch made the light from the sky a different engine (or something) then light from blocks. His tweets weren't that enlightening (pardon the pun. Those are two of the images he posted on twitter.*Edit* ninja'd, shouldn't have spent so much time getting the image tags to work.
Except knowing how dark my world already appears, it might make it even gloomier. Hope I don't have to change things too much, but thanks you two. It does seem to be an improvement though, especially for vanilla Minecraft...at least from my dark foreboding kind of perspective and definately seems to make it a little more atmospheric.
As you can see I don't get out much and entirely miss these important announcements. :sad.gif:

Looking at what Notch has said so far, it seems as though there is a texture that determines the light levels through the day, which may be similar to the biome triangle. If so, it should be fairly easy to set it so that it works smoothly with the texture pack. The real question is whether you can also change the color of the light given off by torches.
EDIT: In other news… does anyone know a better image host? I've been using Photo Bucket, but I've been hitting the bandwidth limit for the past couple months, and I don't feel like shelling out cash for a paid account. Any ideas?
I'm really liking the new furnace. Seems...cleaner? I'm amazed at what you guys do with such a small canvas without your textures looking too "pixelated".
Excited about the new armors as well!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
"... one of the main causes of the fall of the Roman Empire was that, lacking zero, they had no way to indicate successful termination of their C programs." - Robert Firth
I like the look of the new furnace and glowstone. Seems much more industrial (I just wish you posted textures so I could try them out and give some feedback :tongue.gif:).
The new lighting engine looks intriguing to say the least. With a biome-like triangle to adjust colors for the day and night cycle, perhaps even weather cycles, we could really give the world a more interesting feel. Give the nights a more sinister rouge to go with the moon. Maybe it will also determine the colors given off by light-emitting objects in game like the torch and glowstone? The possibilities are endless.
I am also glad that the forums are back up. I was really starting to miss this thread, though I mostly lurk.

Ooooo! That does sound more interesting, but not something for me to rush then. I'd like to live with that for a while, but I will still update with all the new stuff I've been doing and when we get our hands on it, the necessary textures for the new piston. Any continued feedback on this is much appreciated, as you guys are more observant and 'in the know' than I.
As regards image hosts...since the earlier issues, where only certain hosts were 'white listed', I changed to ImageShack and found them to be easy to use and so far very reliable. Unless you tell me otherwise, I've so far not exceeded any bandwidth, infact it does say there is no limit and thats for the free membership only. So far I'm not aware of anything being deleted either. Give that a try, ksheep.
Awesome new stuff Glimmar! I love the glowstone. I'll give it a go with screens as soon as I get my hands onnit.Talk about out of the loop. I've been doing a community flea market since 4AM Saturday...and boy are my arms tired! Wait...wrong joke:P
Thanks Faust, that's very encouraging.
Haha! I love flea markets. Did you come away with anything interesting? :smile.gif:
I'm really looking forward to you making something with these new textures, particularly my new wool and wood textures...pics to follow later today, hopefully. As much as anyone I know on these forums you will bring out some cool examples...if you've the time.

Thanks, 'D1g1talDragon'. :smile.gif:
I can only speak for myself, but some textures, like this new furnace for example, can consume a couple of days of free time. I generally work and re-work things to destruction...sometimes it works and then there are the times you feel like packing it all in, but when it does work, it's the best feeling in the world! Kind of like getting a new toy when you were a kid!

Thanks, torturran!
I know you don't post very often, but when you do your observations and input is always insightful and worth reading. Thanks for that info regarding the lighting...as you say, it should be very interesting to muck about with.
Sorry about the lack of stuff to play with along with the pics. It's rather bad form to tempt people with pics, but I do like to garner a bit of interest as I lead up to another update and then give everyone something worthwhile all in one go.
As regards the forum collapse, you know when you're addicted to something, if like me you keep clicking on the same link every half hour to see if it's working again. I don't visit any other Minecraft sites, so felt very cut-off! :blink.gif:
Alright, Notch has said that this update "Will be pistons only, although there may be a few bug fixes". He is aiming to get it out later this week, around Thursday. It seems that we will have to wait until the 1.8 update for the new lighting.

Oh well, something to look forward to then, thanks sheep. I'll still work towards getting my update out as soon after this Thursday. Any more info on how the piston textures will be generated...taken from existing textures or entirely new template?
As far as I can tell, it's completely new textures, but they haven't said yet. The base bares some resemblance to the furnaces in vanilla Minecraft, but that may just be superficial. If I had to guess, they'd probably have it as an independent item texture, similar to the boats, just due to the complexity of it. Jeb will probably inform the texture pack artists in the next couple of days if it's on the terrain sheet.

By this picture, which is from the video that mojang put out, it looks like an entirely new texture. At least for the extendable portion. The back looks similar to the dispenser texture, I think. Haven't used default in a long time.
<Speculation> If you wanted to get started it seems that the base is 12x12x16 pixels (24x24x32 for this pack). Then the side of the wood takes the remaining 4 pixels (again 8 for this one) that side also seems to be repeated for the "rod thing" that extends. Then there is just the front portion that is the wood bit. It also seems to copy the top of the furnace for the back of the piston. Very confusing to me. I believe it will only take 2 additional tiles to texture the entire piston. </speculation>
*Edit* wow I am slow

Well, I'm impressed...you've gleaned a lot more from that than I was able to!
I'm never confident enough to do something before I get my hands on the finished item, after the update. I hope it is a new texture. Although it means a bit more work, it certainly allows for more imaginative possibilities. As I don't mess around with many mods these days, I'm always excited when a mod becomes 'official'.
Although I do have Photshop, I prefer to use OpenSource Gimp. Free to download, but please consider supporting the cause. :smile.gif:
Thanks Faust, that's very encouraging.

I did find a bunch of stuff that I needed (the "break" I had is winding down now, but I need to restock with dishes and such that I sold when "they" moved in)
:biggrin.gif:
I also found something that will relate to you, this thread, the awesome people who participate/follow here, and last, but not least...Steam Punk. It's something I cannot show now, but get to do in real life.
You and ssaint will relate the most (YAY! I get to do real life art stuff)
I have a ton of things to shoot right now with wood/wool/glowstone. My guild has some of the best builders I have seen since PipeWorld (also a nice playground for screens). But I will for sure be building something new myself. A tavern of sorts made with wood, wool carpeting, and lit purely of glowstone.
:cool.gif:
Edit - if this place goes down again...or even if not, a few of us are also on Planet Minecraft. You don't use threads to update there, you get a page to update per project. So you only update when you want really.
I have seen Xxsheep, Ovo, LordTrilobite, Scuttles, and a few others there already.

Why did you have to sell your plates when 'they' moved in? It's sounding more like a Lovecraft story...but I shouldn't jest as i know it was a serious situation. :sad.gif:
I was going to upload to Planet Minecraft, but then I couldn't face having to update elsewhere when I barely manage here!! Perhaps one day I'll have the time and consider the pack more complete. :sad.gif:
Anyways, hope you will do something with some of the new textures as your imagination will certainly do it justice. I'll just get me tea (evening meal) and then I'll upload some more taster pics.

In other news, I have the very first Alpha version of my new stand alone texture mixer done. It's very crude and doesn't support HD textures yet though. (That's one of the next things on my list.) I also only have the windows build up as I am having some issues with my Linux machine. (I think the HD might be on it's way out.)
For more info, either visit the thread for my web-based one or go to my blog at http://blog.thefool76.com
(I plan on giving it it's own thread once I get HD support in and make it a tad more user-friendly.)
