Just uploaded most of the pics of my builds onto the Glimmar's Steampunk Gallery on the SteamCraft forum. You can see them all here. Unfortunately, a couple of them refuse to show up properly (namely a couple that I reposted from a Worth1000 contest). Anyway, I hope you enjoy.
Why hasn't anyone thought of doing 'MayanCraft' before, because that title is an absolute cracker and the subject a Meso-American civilisation, all of which built with big blocks of stone, is custom made for Minecraft's blockiness. Why hasn't anyone done it before...it's a mystery to me?
Hunter it will be perfect for your 64x predilection and should be a lot of fun with all the amazing imagery and art associated with it. Good luck with it all and I shall remember way down the line that I was there at the birth of another great pack.
[edit] If anything should pop into my head regarding 'MayanCraft' I shall let you know. :smile.gif:
Thank you - I appreciate it. And I'm grateful for you putting the idea into my mind. I'm not sure what resolution I'll do - it might be 32x if I can actually learn to draw textures by hand, if not then I'll probably go the route of modifying stock textures and do it at 64x. I have no plans of doing it at a higher resolution than that, and unless I suddenly learn to do textures like XSSheep, I don't foresee a 16x version either.
But it's off to a start, and I couldn't have begun it without you!

I love this pack. It's the first one I ever tried with the patcher and it's still my favorite. I don't mean to press you, but is there any chance the brighter terrain sheet will be updated?
Thanks, by the way, for all the hard work and for sharing your art with us!
There are two things I dont like about Gthis pack that have made me to never use it.
1. Paintings and Pumpkins. They arent paintings and pumpkins, I dislike that alot. I want a texture pack where the texture actually represents what it is. Paintings are now machines and pumpkins are now aquanaut helmets. If someone have a version with actual paintings and/or pumpkins I'd be very happy.
2. In SMP peoples creations would look weird, mainly because of the above thing. I'm mainly an SMP player, so I wouldnt use this unless there was a server for Steampunks(with Glimmars pack) only. If there was a server like that I'd forgive the earlier "texture pack sins". :tongue.gif:
I think most users of this texture pack enjoy the alterations done to both the paintings and the pumpkins as it adds versatility to the use of them in creating a more varied world using the same objects. Just find another texture pack you like and alter the things you dislike or create your own textures for said objects.

What you see as sins...we feel are the strengths of this TP. The shear size of Glimmar's cajones to have changed the pumpkin into something useful is reason enough to love this pack.
I think if you re-read the opening page of this thread, you'll see that Glimmar develops this pack based on what is pleasing to him and what he deems as good for building. If you dislike the pumpkins or the paintings...then simply edit the terrain.png to suite your needs...I know I do!

I could, but I suck at that. If Im gonna edit a Texture pack I'm gonna make one completely by myself, all I need is the updated gui and terrain.png though, I cant find them.
So, theres no version with actual paintings or pumpkins? Also, about the strengths and sins, I'm a SMP player, I'm pretty much required to use a texture pack with actual pumpkins and paintings since the server I'm in would look weird otherwise. You play SP, rite?
Lord_of_Potatoes, just to inform you that PipeHead is very much an SMP player. He founded 'PipeWorld' and almost exclusively plays with many others, via SMP, who share his vision of epic construction. Just check out his work and that of many others on his servers throughout my thread and in my OP.
I appreciate your disappointment that a couple of things in my pack don't suit your world view of Minecraft. However, when I set out to make this pack I didn't want to make a copy of what everybody else does, but just in a different style, I wanted to make as many limited building blocks and paintings work their socks off to be as useful as possible in a Victorian Steampunk world and be a little more original than just producing yet another medieval/fantasy clone or minecraft enhanced replica.
The number of people who have downloaded this pack and the volume of visitors here, suggest they like what I've done. Having said that, I have to be honest and repeat what PipeHead has already put forward...that I make this pack for myself, not to win any prizes or to be popular. I don't get paid, don't ask for donations and don't suffer people to wade through adf.ly. If you like what you see...make personal use of it, if you don't...pass by and use something more to your liking, or as many do, change what you don't like for yourself. You've said you'd rather make your own pack than go to the trouble of changing one or two things. Not entirely sure of the logic of that, but that's your choice. :smile.gif:
On average I get one person a month who will leave exactly the same comment as you have, "I'd use this pack, but I don't like such and such". Are you hoping I'll change something because of your comment, when you're getting something for nothing, at great expense and time to myself and when many, many people like it as it is, most importantly myself.
If you still want to know why I chose to make the pumpkins and the paintings the way I did, here are my reasons, put together for just such visitors as yourself. I suspect you've probably moved on by now, but if not, read on:
My philosophy for a game with limited blocks, but infinite building potential, is to make as many of the blocks as adaptable or multi-tasking in a steampunk world as possible. However, I have still designed them to retain some purposeful mystery in the landscape, I certainly don't want them to appear ridiculous. Hence, clay for now is akin to rusty iron crates or girder-like building blocks...perhaps the remains of some past industrial project...acceptable given the theme of a steampunk fantasy world, though now you have a very useful extra iron block to build with, in addition to it's other state as a brick block. Remember, many of my blocks were designed at a time when we had far fewer blocks or mods to play around with.
Similarly the pumpkin, being the only 'helmet' block we can wear with an editable HUD, was too good an opportunity to miss not to use it for something like a primitive space/diving helmet for building underwater bases. There was an excellent 'diving' mod by dougbenham that made use of the pumpkin for this purpose when the pumpkin first came out in the Halloween update and it worked beautifully in my opinion. Sadly the mod was never updated after further Notch updates. Other underwater diving mods haven't been as well suited to the period nature of a diving helm since taking the more modern 'scuba diving' approach.
My lantern/diving helm might look strange in the landscape, but no stranger than someone on your standard server walking around with a pumpkin on his head! If you consider it from the point of view of this theme...Victorian Industrial Steampunk, then it's purpose in the landscape can be anything from 'vents' for some underground complex, 'equipment' left behind by some failed expedition or anything you else you want to put your imagination to. One thing for sure, you should be able to put them to many more uses alongside my other weird and multi-functional blocks than ever you would as a simple Halloween pumpkin! :smile.gif:
The 'pumpkin' is another useful source of light in the game, one that can be used underwater and, unlike the glowstones, can actually be moved around...so perfect for underwater bases! Pumpkins tend to look a little silly underwater, but perhaps you haven't considered it's use in that environment! Making a diving helm texture also second as a lantern texture and have pipes around it, that fitted my old redstone pipes, gave it many more uses in this theme than ever a natural looking pumpkin would. They make excellent Victorian railway lanterns, street lights, directional looking airship lights, underwater beacons, etc., etc. None of which you'd be able to do with a halloween pumpkin!
This idea of 'multifunctionality' underpins my approach to all the blocks in Glimmar's Steampunk, even the humble dirt block. I could make it look more like real dirt/soil, but then I'd lose it's use as another 'architectural' building block, in this case something like red sandstone. Stone, cobble, gravel, even grass are purposefully designed to be useable in as many other ways than just their naturally occurring states, so by necessity seem more plain than some other packs.
The 'multifunctionality' of blocks is the reason why glass is the way it is...the only block that can second as wrought ironwork scaffolding. 'Individual' blocks like the furnace, craftbench, bed, etc. can have more imaginative detail applied, be relatively clear in their purpose, but for me must still have as many other uses as possible in a Steampunk world besides their normal Minecraft function.
My 'paintings' in the art folder haven't escaped my peculiar view of Minecraft's possibilities either, hence lots of gadgets, pipes and chains...you can just do a lot more with functional looking things than a nice looking painting, and this is coming from someone who is a landscape painter in real life.
So what can you do with a standard painting or pumpkin? Well I guess you can use them for decoration, but when you've repeated the same painting around your world, and shown how limited your choice of paintings is by repeating the Mona Lisa 600 times, and decorated your front step with a pumpkin, there's not much else you can do with them. Were as something functional looking, just like the blocks you build with, can go on being useful in many more situations, simply because you expect those manufactured things to be repeated.
So if something in Glimmar's Steampunk looks a little weird and you find yourself asking what on earth was this guy 'on' when he decided on this or that for a texture, try instead to ask yourself to what other uses you can put things like pumpkins, beds, musicplayers, clockwork cakes with their multifuctional design, etc., when creating an industrial fantasy world. Try to bear in mind this is an Industrial/Victorian/sci-fi/Steampunk theme pack, not a medieval fantasy theme. Try not to compare things unfavourably with the 'usual' look of Minecraft. The threads are already fit to bursting with everything you could wish for in that direction, if that sort of thing is your cup of tea.
As promised here are some night time pics of the Ophelia. I had to brighten them in PhotoShop just so you could see them. Work is fast progressing even since these pics were taken. The engine room is magnificently done by Sephirothkane and a hangar has been added, but no more pics until New Horizons is officially released...wouldn't want to spoil it for everyone!
@ReaperOfDeath - it's private for now.
Here is an overhead shot courtesy of the Dynamic Map plugin...hard to gauge her scale, but she's got a beautiful symmetry to her.
A shot of bow section
A shot of the aft section
A close up of the engines
Night time pics always have a drama about them. Those are excellent, as usual, Pipe. Just to say, until I posted this (when they suddenly appeared in this post) I had to visit the website you uploaded them to, to see them. Don't know what's up with my browser today? If anyone else is having the same problem I was having, I'd hate for folk to pass over them not thinking, as they are just as amazing as all the other stuff you've made.
Also, disaster of disasters, the other awesome daytime pics of the 'Ophelia' aren't showing up for me at all any more and hope against hope this isn't the same for everyone. I think they are proving so popular your account can't stand the traffic? I have a horrible gap in my new OP and I'm desperately missing gawping at Ophelia.
[edit] Never mind, they've just popped back into existence! Phew, that's a relief. Just like it warped off to complete a mission and returned to base, Lol!
Just thought I'd let you know, I decided to try to take care of Kris Eike, the creator of the HDCraft pack, in a slightly more direct fashion. I decided to look into his other packs and found that he had included a number of textures from Gestank's Mythos pack, without prior permission… and he was using adf.ly for that one too. Went and reported him on the adf.ly site for breaking DMCA laws and for being underage (17, according to his profile, when adf.ly clearly states must be 18 or older). Hopefully we shall see both HDCrafts and the Horror pack links down within a couple hours.

I had to walk away from my computer in disgust last night when I realised the scale of what he'd been doing in terms of mopping up as many redundant packs, without asking for permission and asking for donations/adf.ly for each pack. The guy wasn't doing this for love of resurrecting a pack, it was for sheer profit and very much against the rules as regards adf.ly and against all fairness asking for donations. How many packs was he profiteering from in the end, I switched my computer off at 5. Donation buttons and adf.ly links for each of those was just unnacceptable in my opinion. :sad.gif:

@Pipehead - Very nice lighting. I may have shown you my "little" use of it...but you sure know how to perfect ideas.

Okay, now I have WorseGrass, if I may call it so... :tongue.gif: I need to figure out a way to get it removed...
Also, Vernian Process donated music to Glimmars Texture pack? Pretty generous of them, too bad Abney Park didnt. :tongue.gif:
Hi Lord_of_Potatoes. Love the name by the way. :smile.gif:
How do you mean WorseGrass. I'll take a guess and take it you mean the opposite of 'BetterGrass'. Have the sides of the grass gone all grey? Do you have Modloader installed for any other mods? If so, the same happened to me just this weekend when I did the 'Piston' mod Steampunk textures. Having installed both, I noticed my BetterGrass had become 'BlahGrass'.
There's an incompatibility between MCPatcher and Modloader. I expect it will be sorted sometime soon. I hope so, as I like BetterGrass. For the time being you'll have to switch BetterGrass off, but I'm not sure how you do this without redownloading Minecraft and running the Patcher and then installing your mods. If you just re-run the Patcher it will install a new patched copy of the minecraft.jar without Modloader, etc.
Of course I could have guessed wrong, as I usually do, and you probably meant something entirely different. Lol!

Haha! 'Incraft'...Love it!! What is it about Meso-american cultures that fits so well with Minecraft...Aztecraft... they all need snapping up, 'cos I haven't got time to do anything else, lol!
You are absolutely right of course about the 'Borrowers'. It's not going to go away over night, neither do i think a separate sub-forum as suggested is going to solve the problem...that's just going to produce a ghetto. 'Education' as in real life, is the only way forward...a slow process of getting what's acceptable in a civilised gathering of like-minded people recognised by all...in short 'fairness'. When you try to play fair yourself, I should remember that not everyone likes to play that way too. I need to get my horse 'blinkers' on again (don't know what you call them in your part of the world, but those leather patch thingies you stick over the eyes of cart horses so they don't get spooked by things off to the side?).
I'm going to have a bit of a play tonight and just remember what it is I like about Minecraft. :smile.gif:
I'm going to leave my crime fighting capers behind tonight and resist the urge to swing over. I'm re-arranging my Railway Terminus/Factory complex to provide the ultimate storage and redistribution solution for my burgeoning supply of materials, resulting in my ultimate conquest of the surrounding island of Glimmar's World. Done the hard way, like a man!

Glimmar, I love the millenaire mod viewtopic.php?f=1032&t=247048
i know your busy making texture updates etc, but I was wondering if you could make any textures for it?
Also when will other armors be finished?
Just curious questions, not demands btw
Oh, wow! I know it's a fabulous mod, but I haven't even finished the armors, which i am currently working on (when motivation and free time allow) and then I want to continue converting the rest of the mobs to my own interpretations. So probably ages away from working on any other mods now. The 'Pistons' mod was a whim and because it's likely to become official, so I'd have to do it anyway, and doing it now takes the pressure off me later, during update time. So, very sorry FreddJW. :sad.gif:
Just to say that o1ofco2 is currently working on a Glimmar's Steampunk set of textures for the 'IndustrialCraft' mod with my permission, and when that's available I'll let you all know. Go check out his thread here and give him some encouragement: Texturepackupgrade IC32x

Curse PremiumNight time pics always have a drama about them.

Curse PremiumI had to walk away from my computer in disgust last night when I realised the scale of what he'd been doing in terms of mopping up as many redundant packs, without asking for permission and asking for donations/adf.ly for each pack. :sad.gif:

Retired StaffFisrt off...HI ALL!!
@ksheep - posted this on my thread but thought I'd post it here too:
@Glimmar - Don't let that guy drive you nuts. People like him are like flies now. There's always gonna be flies. Just keep swatting at them as you go about your business.
:biggrin.gif:
@Pipehead - Very nice lighting. I may have shown you my "little" use of it...but you sure know how to perfect ideas.
"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to...."
I love this texture pack! I edited it the main with bits and pieces from your alternative sheets, but I really enjoy it overall. ^^
Just wanted to say thank you and keep up the great work! It always looks amazing!

Curse PremiumAugh... brain fire on help water...
No... I have too many other projects... must not do Incraft.
Must resist.
-----
I say, the builds that get posted to this particular thread are constantly blowing my socks right off my feet... well it's either that or I need to cut back on the nitrogen in my new experimental foot powder.
-----
As for the people 'borrowing' stuff for their own nefarious plans, don't let them get you down too much. While parasites can get annoying at times, they are seldom worth setting yourself on fire to remove them. :wink.gif: (I say seldom due to the unfortunate incident involving fleas on some test rats in the now sealed, and submerged in lava, lab #6)

Curse PremiumHi Lord_of_Potatoes.
:smile.gif:
Howdy Faust. :smile.gif:
Lol! Must resist the 'Spideysuit'...
Thank you RagAhroun, I always appreciate the encouragement. :smile.gif:
LOL - If it's easier, you could always help me finish. :smile.gif: I think a collaboration would work better anyhow - I'm not in this for the glory, I just want to make something that looks great, and I'll accept help anywhere I can find it.
Heck no, I NEVER play SP anymore...strictly SMP, I build for me so if I use what looks good for the TP I am using and some one doesn't understand it...well too bad...I like and in my world what I like counts the most ROFL
OMG...no other and I mean no other music gets me pumped for minecraft building than Vernia Process...seriously, I cannot thank them enough for having pulled me out of my creative doldrums I sometimes find myself in!!! I am always looking for other bands to help so I'll see how Abney Park does for my spark!
