Also, I had read in one of the comments that someone (Arlo) wanted the sky to be a greyer color to complement the Steampunk setting. I suggest turning the fog settings up a bit higher if you haven't already. Gave it a "London" feel (I'm completely from the US and have never been to London, so forgive me if for some reason that was insulting, because it certainly wasn't meant to be :tongue.gif:)
Gah, I never thought of that - how clever! A fog-shrouded London fits the era very well, btw.
I thought it fit well :smile.gif: But I also wasn't sure if there are some who don't equate Victorian England with Steampunk like many do (including myself).
And having seen your other comment -- eyes nearing their 6th decade! I told my husband and he was said, "Awesome." We're only in our twenties, so we had a short conversation about seeing his parents playing Minecraft (if they weren't currently addicted to Red Dead Redemption, :Sheep:)
So far, I've only got two complaints with this pack.
The first is with the various stones.
The second is that sapling drops are incredibly hard to see against the grass
I like cobblestone being a different colour to 'raw' stone anyway, and have changed the cobblestone in several texture packs I use to MAKE it look a different colour.
It's harder to see when they're just single blocks, but when you get underground and surrounded by stone, the cobble really starts to look blue, whereas the smooth starts looking sickly yellow. I just prefer similar colour schemes.
Ah noo, why do I have to be out of town right now. I was really looking forward to messing with my airships with this pack. Oh well guess I'll have to wait a bit longer.
Am liking all the stuff you guys and posted pic of so far though, things are really looking great .

Thanks for the release, I know you feel it's a little rushed, but it's really a work of art, although as the artist you won't see that, you'll only see the imperfections :smile.gif:
I hope you can relax a little now, and take the gradual refinement at a more leisurely pace.......
......Anyway, to work, I must go make a new skin as I said earlier :biggrin.gif:
Thanks, Zenity. :smile.gif: You describe it acurately. No one sees the imperfections more than the artist. Thanks for the support though, it's appreciated.
Incidentally, I believe you're from Scotland. I'm not that far away in international terms, being resident in the Industrial North West of England, just beneath the Lake District! Used to go to various places in Scotland as a kid with my parents, absolutely love it...as does anyone who visits. Not called 'Bonny Scotland' without reason! :smile.gif: Great artisitic centres in Glasgow and Edinburgh too.

Looks damn good! Want to do some flowers/mushrooms for me? :smile.gif:
Thanks, ExcitedPeasant, and nice texture pack you have there. Haha, I struggled for ages with my foliage too, and even more so with the game breaking stone and cobble, so thank you for asking, I'm flattered, but I've too much on trying to get things sorted here. I could look back through some of my artwork for my foliage. I tend to work large and then slowly reduce to 32x32 refining as I go. Perhaps something there might work.

I second that regular stone looks too much like dirt though
You had any ideas for re-painting the new hell blocks yet?
I suppose it'd help if we knew what they were though :tongue.gif:
I'll definately be looking at the stone and cobblestone relationship. It's a tricky one indeed! New types will keep popping up until I get enough variations that people are happy. it works for my world, but I understand everyone's uses the building blocks in different ways.
Hell blocks? Oh yes, I'm looking forward to the possibilities there...when the dust settles! I should think this will all fit in nicely with Steampunk and I have been thinking along the lines of branching out with my current textures into a 'Lovecraftian' world theme, as there are some similarities of atmosphere and period and the Hell/Slip areas would fit wonderfully.

Hey glimmar, your proboly going to get a lot of requests, but do you plan on making the red stone, when placed down, more noticble when on, like the thing glows instead of little dust?
Definately! My original intention was to have old style neon lights glowing, but ealier in my thread I wrote about how 2-dimensional the lights went when the redstone dust was activated. I think there's plenty of scope for experimentation though and perhaps I can make the existing brass pipes kind of glow red hot as if heated up. There are limitations though, because the particles for the puffs of dust are the same as the smoke coming out of the green gas lamps and reactions with lava.
I was disappointed the lights didn't work out, because I'd envisaged us all being able to make neon displays and landing strip lights etc. I wish Notch would make it possible to place redstone dust up vertical walls!
My neon tube texture is included on the terrain.png, if you want to give it a try! :smile.gif:

YEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! Thank you SO MUCH! I'm off to install it NOW. :biggrin.gif:
EDIT: What a simply stunning job you've done Glimmar - it was well worth the wait, I can tell you that. As Xoria says, a few posts further down, it's an elegant texture pack as well as very good looking.
I haven't the room in this post to give you the colossal amount of and you deserve. :smile.gif:
Thanks, Hoodwink. Yourself and many others have been very encouraging and it's made it a pleasure to work on. I'm aware of it's limitations though, in that the textures for me lend themselves more for building developed worlds rather than exploration, but I'll keep on releasing new texture blocks. It's frustrating, but only in the sense of a puzzle that needs solving.
Quote from Xoria »
Glimmar, I'll admit to being somewhat skeptical about the ferns, seeing as how I was loving the 3 blossom roses that I had recolored to blue that was occupying that particular spot in my texture file, but as it turns out, I might just keep the ferns. http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/9143175/ ... t?h=f6c63c
The combination contains just the right mix of dazzle and subtlety that I find combines into elegance.
The glass is quite a treat as well.
This is an excellent contribution to our texture choices.
Thanks for sharing.
Many thanks, Xoria. It's a tricky one really on what to keep that you've become familiar with and like. I realized, when changing any of the textures that something would not look right in someone elses world. It was a difficult choice with the plants as there are only two to play with, but as mentioned earlier in the thread, I settled on ferns as they fit so well in so many situations, from castle ruins to factory walls, cave entrances, around trees and along river banks. I always mixed and matched so I am more than happy that people just use what they want from the pack if they are able to edit themselves.
I wish the ability to mix and match was possible from within the program itself, using a file of textures we could all keep on our hard drive. Would make editing a lot easier! The sky's (quite literally!) the limit with Minecraft though. That's what's so cool about it.
Quote from AnaBrie »
I do plan to play around with a few different textures (used all yours except for the lava, and the tools, art, etc. are Painterly), but on the whole will keep this pack as is. I'll probably change out the various cobblestone you created, and (if I'm ambitious enough) add some color variation to the bookcase (keeping the tones muted, of course). I also agree that the regular stone looks too sandy, but that's a simple enough fix, and I understand your reason for making it as such.
There are not enough positive words I can say about this pack, for fear I'd sound repetitive and giggly, but I am truly impressed by what you've accomplished. Well done sir -- rest up, and may the Ghasts hurl Halloween candy gently into your pockets.
Thanks, AnaBrie. Glad you like the textures and more than happy that you're mixing and matching. Great pics too! Hope to see more from everyone. I'm from the UK and in my 5th decade and I can still remember seeing real life smogs going to school on a wintry morning. You don't get them now...the airs relatively lovely a fresh, but we all have that image of murky Victorian London as Steampunk location and it's definately accurate and not in the least offensive. Anyway you Yanks all walk around with Stetsons(?) on boardwalks don't you? ;D Well at least they did when I was a kid! Lol! Now I'm going to be causing offence now! Aaargh.
Yes, turning the fog up a bit works a treat with the atmosphere. With the new Halloween update we also get wintery skies too. That will fit wonderfully with this theme.
To be honest your not missing much with my lava as it stands at the moment...unless you like baked beans a lot! :biggrin.gif: The water would add to your atmosphere though. That should be acheivable for you in th HD fix mod by xau. You have to make the right choices in that mod to get my water visible and animated. It's a little more transparent than most folks are used to, but I was thinking of all those underwater Captain Nemo style subs and constructions that would be viewable from the surface. Also helps somewhat in finding clay, which I always find a pain discovering!
I'm personally unable to get your fire to show. I've scoured the forums to see how to save it somewhere else (if that's what was needed) but nothing popped up. Am I missing something?
Again, both of these errors may (and probably do) stem from my personal bugs using the Patcher, and since everything will tweak out when the Halloween update goes live, I'm not too worried currently. But I did figure it would be good to post this so both Glimmar and others who might have similar issues could see.
Update: Just redownloaded the entire thing (after saving my Saves folder) and manually added the Cart and Sign textures, and they work properly now. I'm still unable to get the fire to show up as Glimmar's fire. It's the default... whatever it is/wherever it's saved.
AnaBrie, sorry, but the green flame popping out of the lava is a consequence of changing the colouring of the particles for the lamps and the furnace. It's not possible to have different colours I'm afraid. I look at the green lava flames as a nice contrast and see them as impurities burning up, like copper, etc. Sort of like the diffferent colours you get with fireworks, smelting, etc. It is a trade off though. :sad.gif:
I'm not sure it's possible to have anything other than Notch's fire animated, if unanimated then you can use alternative textures. I've not really looked into this though. I use the original fire though myself. More than happy with that. However, again with the particles limitation, you've got to put up with the murky green polluted smoke I created for the green gas lamps puffing up over any of your fires! :biggrin.gif:

So far, I've only got two complaints with this pack.
The first is with the various stones. None of them really fit together with each other. The smooth stone is very yellow, while the cobble is very blue. The steps are grey. They honestly don't go together and I think it would be nice to see some coherence between them.
The second is that sapling drops are incredibly hard to see against the grass, as they're very small and thin, and the greens blend in with each other.
I know what you mean with the building blocks. It's definately a problem, but we are faced with making the blocks look similar in colour, in which we are faced with fewer contrasts between materials in our builds, or go for contrasting colours for diversity, but breaking the link between rock, cobblestone, halfblock. I plumbed for the contrast, because it better fitted my world and my experience of cobblestone and sandstone where I live.
Here's a couple of pics to show buildings near where I live to show the colour of the sandstone in use.
You can see the cream coloured sandstone in use here over the windows in this re-used Victorian textile mill.
Also the half block was changed at the last minute to give a metallic hint for those wanting to build subs and factories. It's down to how they are used as well.
As mentioned, I will definately be trying out different styles of stone and cobblestone as they are so important, to see what's possible.
I'll also try out some new saplings too, I see what you mean. I don't use the 'better grass' mod though so when looking at the saplings they're not too bad against a background of soil. I'm also not very happy with my tree foliage. I'm wondering about about trying out a hint of autumn in the trees (not full on), but just something to better contrast with the grass.
To everyone: I will continue to edit things, and I am absorbing everyone's observations and very grateful you don't actually hate stuff. I can look forward to halloween update like everyone else, for a bit of a break.

But It might not be appropriate for the Mapping and Modding section! Anyways, I've got some tall ships and submarines to try out yet!
This is a great texture pack, I especially love the clay, gold blocks, trees, and of course, all of the devices and widgets. The one issue I have, though, is that IMO I think you may want to tone down the orange of the final stage crops a bit. When assembled in large quantities, it starts to look a bit like a field of cheetos due to the strong color. The shape of the crops, though, is excellent.. perfect for decoration.
Thanks, AnaBrie. [...] Anyway you Yanks all walk around with Stetsons(?) on boardwalks don't you? ;D Well at least they did when I was a kid! Lol! Now I'm going to be causing offence now! Aaargh.

I did the HD texture fix, AND kept your water. I even lightened the lava a bit from the deeper red orange to a bit lighter, and more yellow. I messed with some other colors as well:
Just simple things, though, as I'm not very well versed in PS (that's my hubby's department :smile.gif:). So I just selected and used the various hue/saturation sliders, because I really wanted to keep the feel of what you did, because it's excellent work.
Good idea about impurities burning up. And since I realized it wasn't to do with me messing up the HD-texture patcher, I feel better :smile.gif: I wouldn't trade that green lamp animation for anything, even orange lava embers!
Thanks so much for explaining the fire animation to me. I just knew I'd screwed something up or was overlooking a specific "fire" file somewhere. I don't notice the smoky green puffs coming off fires, but it did surprise me the first time I killed an animal and its corpse went up in a green poof! :wink.gif:
I know that you mentioned earlier that there would be problems with the update and there was. My still water is messed up and all I see is a thin strip of blue. Moving water is just fine and I haven't noticed any other problems so far.
BTW Awesome work done, I enjoy the colorings and stuff. Scared me at first though when I was in semi-darkness and I mistook the smoothstone for sand that just hadn't gotten the message that gravity works yet. (new generated map) I was surrounded and afraid to touch ANYTHING.
Yeah, it was a duh moment.
Also, not sure, but does the green not give off quite as much light? it could be the lighting in my room irl, or because its green.. but I almost feel like it's not enough. Just curious.
Soo looking forward to the new blocks (well, heck, I haven't gone beyond iron yet with this texturepack, so I'm looking forward to alot more :smile.gif: )

I think the torches got dimmer with the update D: Probably not his texture pack.
Looks like re-adjusting for the Halloween update won't require much though. Just.. greyscaling leaves and grass apparently. Though for some reason it looks like grass "edges" don't require this treatment D:
Just chipping in here as a lover of this texture with a quick fix for halloween.
http://www.mediafire.com/?labi41nk2155o9y
I have used the origional hell textures, rescaled them and smoothed them a bit and inserted them (They might look a tiny bit blurry but it's just a quick fix. Also I have desaturated the grass to work with the new system.
Remember to go to the hotfix thread and download the new 1.1.7 exe or after applying textures your mc will crash.
NOTE: *This is just a temporary fix, I am in no way here to take glimmar's work.*
I'll be waiting to see what Glimmar comes up with for his hell textures. This should be damn good.
EDIT: Forgot this one has a couple of personal mods in too. Sorry bout that :B Smooth stone has simply been colour adjusted to grey-blue (Just desaturate and adjust colour to +6 yellow +2 green for a closest approx of origional colours) and diamond block is replaced with a blue coloured restyling of iron (You might have to get the orig. pack to replace it).
This would be great if it wasn't outdated... you should get to work on the Halloween stuff next.
It's not eactly hard to add the hell textures in yourself temporarily.
It's been 1 day. He's probably got other stuff to do in his life.
If you really cant wait to be able to use this then feel free to use my botched together version with the hell textures upsized to 32x32 and added in thats posted on the previous page. It will make the Kell section just look pretty much like normal 16x16 minecraft.

Also, not sure, but does the green not give off quite as much light? it could be the lighting in my room irl, or because its green.. but I almost feel like it's not enough. Just curious.
Soo looking forward to the new blocks (well, heck, I haven't gone beyond iron yet with this texturepack, so I'm looking forward to alot more :smile.gif: )
friend - "Don't do it! Crime doesn't pay!"
me - "So? I'm not doing it for the money."
Looks like re-adjusting for the Halloween update won't require much though. Just.. greyscaling leaves and grass apparently. Though for some reason it looks like grass "edges" don't require this treatment D:

Sorry bout that :B Smooth stone has simply been colour adjusted to grey-blue (Just desaturate and adjust colour to +6 yellow +2 green for a closest approx of origional colours) and diamond block is replaced with a blue coloured restyling of iron (You might have to get the orig. pack to replace it).
i have been waiting with baited breath for this release and you DID NOT disapoint!
/hug
and you can suck it fox chicken
It's not eactly hard to add the hell textures in yourself temporarily.
It's been 1 day. He's probably got other stuff to do in his life.
If you really cant wait to be able to use this then feel free to use my botched together version with the hell textures upsized to 32x32 and added in thats posted on the previous page. It will make the Kell section just look pretty much like normal 16x16 minecraft.
