My son and I have a closed multi-player world now, and we have this problem with collecting Nether materials. One of us has to save off the world to play in single play, collect nether resources, then move the map back to SMP play.
There's a Bukkit plugin that creates working nether portals, only glitches is no red mist in the nether (that'll require a bugfix by notch), no fast travel effect, and you have to manually create the other portal. But hey, legit nether blocks! :biggrin.gif:

That would be awesome, mate! Thanks for that. I guess we'll need to take some obsidian through with us for the return journey and no free obsidian on the way back, eh? It's just nice to know we can still be legit and cut out the hassle of passing a huge save file back and forward!
I also play on a closed multiplayer world and have found a way to access the nether. First, you put all your valuables in a chest then you go to a set spot that you can mark and remember and log out. Make sure everyone is off the server then shut down the server and change in the server.properties 'hellworld=false' to true. Then log in and see if you die. (as it places you in the corresponding coordinates which may be high in the air or in lava etc) Repeat until you find a safe spot then mark both and change the hellworld setting whenever you want to visit the nether.
Kind of confusing... If you don't understand I could try to explain it better.
Using the command /nether kit will give you the tools to make a portal, I do it whenever I make a new one as it's not really cheating since it SHOULD be there.
EDIT: Seems the distance algorithm's been fixed, and the portal creation since I last downloaded it (which was yesterday, haha). And now you can specify if portals go to the nether or an entirely different world!
@ aTempesT and Trigonous: Many thanks for the help you guys.
As you probably already know, I've only just started my own little closed server, just for myself and my son to work on 'Glimmar's World' and it was rather disappointing to discover I didn't have an easy way for us both to get to my prized Netherplate, but this sounds excellent. Thanks for your help! Nothing remains impossible in Minecraft for long! Doing a quick search here and on Google didn't bear fruits just before tea, so thanks for that link, Trigonous! Here's many for you both. :smile.gif:
Ha ha! That's the wonderful thing about Minecraft! It allows us to fulfil our imaginary dreams (however megalomaniac or crazy our imagination might be!).
Indeed! I now have a world where I legitimately work (the one I've already posted) and one using SPC, which will be up some day soon. My inspiration is the inside of the Nautilus from Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Ha ha! The race is on for who will first complete the Nautilus! Oh, an underwater base would be obligatory too!
I've already achieved that! I just need to branch it out, as right now it's little more than an underwater room. Many to who gets it first!
@ ssaint: My money's on you at the moment. Triskelli mentioned he wanted to make one, but I think he's also very busy with other things too! I've been saying I wanted to make the Nautilus for months , but still haven't started, even though I made a dock for it. :sad.gif:
@ Trigonous: I can't even get past the first post at the moment. Why the heck can't I delete META-INF in the Minecraft_Server folder? I use 7-zip and it obviously works fine with the minecraft.jar!
I'll use aTempesT's solution until I find out why. Google is useless when you really need it...or it could just be me! Also Bukkit looked a bit daunting for humble me.
I try and try and it doesnt work. sigh. Oh well.
Ill use steamcraft for now.
By the way, maybe u can base your armor off of steamcraft! It's quite well done!
Is there any way to disable biome-compliant grass? It's really messed up in the pack.
In what way is it messed up, Ubernox? Works fine for me and others with or without MrMessiah's 'BetterGrass' mod. Check out all the pics above. It is as intended and certainly not messed up. :smile.gif: If you've spawned in a tundra area expect the grass to be grey and dead. Just travel to a better area or start a new world.
This is Notch's plan for how the grass biome triangle works ingame using Mr Messiah's BetterGrass mod:
Here is the 'grass' biome triangle for my own texture pack:
And here is how it effects the grass colour ingame:
Do you mean the grass edges not matching the biome grass colours? This is the same for all texture packs. That's why with mine I limit the amount of grass that hangs over the edge as a compromise. The 'BetterGrass' mod somewhat fixes this, because most grass blocks have their sides filled with the same texture as the top of the grass. Or is there a different problem?
Yes, it is possible to disable the biome colours, by replacing the 'grasscolor.png' file with a blank version, but I've never done this. You'd need to do a search.

Sorry to hear you can't get it to work! Unless your computer really is ancient it should run fine. You can see the evidence of others above in the thread. My daughter sometimes plays it on an old XP PC probably 7 or 8 years old now.
Ha ha, I know steamcraft well! However, when i get round to doing my armour, I have plans for something that will be different, lets say! :Notch:Nothing wrong with steamcraft though. :smile.gif:
Welp, I finished my mansion. Next it's time for the Nautilus! I plan on doing the one from the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and it will be a long project. Should I get a server running, I'll be sure to open it up for help.
The outside. (storage room near)
A bit of art on the outer wall of the house
Gold, Diamond, and glowstone roof. Just for the whynot.
A generator I suppose? It looks cool.
Temporary Storage area.
Ovens galore! all hooked up to an exhaust system
A mansion wouldn't be complete without an enormous clock.
Just be sure to open up the readme in the install directory when it's finished. You can have it up and running in no time once that's done.
To install the plugin, move the "plugin" and "lib" folder into the craftbukkit install directory.
All installed and at least I've got it working. Woo hoo! Thanks, mate! Now I assume I need to install something in the currently empty 'plugins' folder to enable the appropriate commands for creating 'portals' to the Nether and I don't have a 'library' folder in there yet? I'm assuming these are the two folders into which the 'Nethergate' plugin is placed? Can I just create the library folder myself?
Thanks again, Trigonous, at the very least I can more easily install other plugins...something I couldn't do before with Minecraft Server. :smile.gif:

Hope you like!
I certainly do...awesome!
What is particularly pleasing, is the way you are using the furnace/generator set back into an alcove. It really helps the 3d quality of the painting immensely and I love the network of pipes above it, etc. Great stuff! You'll do a great job of reconstructing the Nautilus and I really must dig 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' out again. The Nautilus rendition in that was excellent and 'big'. I have fond memories of the older Disney version, but that one appeared much smaller somehow. Today's computer generated graphics really do allow things to look truly epic!
That's fantastic, and I was just off to bed...how the heck am I going to sleep now, with those visions of my boodied redstone ore used as sacrificial alter stones?!
Really well done, mate, with oodles of atmosphere!
