I just started playing around with a few of the new textures. Epic.
And Vinegrower, your backgrounds are stunning! Cigars, cognac, and whimsical mustachios to you both good sirs!

"... one of the main causes of the fall of the Roman Empire was that, lacking zero, they had no way to indicate successful termination of their C programs." - Robert Firth
latest update, couldn't wait until tomorrow to try out my idea. making stitching in the leather is a pain, but I think it looks awesome.
Also note the engraved "Crafting". While I can't change the actual text, i was able to pinpoint it's exact location to the pixel and can build around it. That is just my proof of concept, I'll come up with something better as I work on that area later.
Deleted the old image links so as to not hijack this thread with my own stuff.
Your work is just so 'classy', mate! Gorgeous in fact. With that quality of work I'm excited to see what you come up with for the other guis. I love the idea of the traveller's photograph of home stuck in his backpack. You could operate a personalisation service with that, with folk having their favourite steampunk pic stuck in! Sorry, I don't want to make more work for you! Anyone with an editor should easily do it for themselves. Lol!
@ Tlos: Sorry I'm not managing to keep up with your stuff at the moment. I will move things to the top, but just having an adventuring/building/texturing break from the forum at the mo' and just popping in briefly to see if I've cause for great concern! :biggrin.gif:
@ Gestankfaust: Just been using your robotic squid the past couple of days and it's fantastic to behold! Fits in very well with the Matrix like concept of Minecraft. :smile.gif: I will include it at the top too!
@ Everyone: As Tiger4Ruler advised folks...if you only play single player, when you've got a good working copy of Minecraft going, just make a back up of your 'bin' file and delete your password (don't forget it though!) in the Minecraft Launcher window. Then just select to play offline after clicking 'login'. This way Minecraft doesn't automatically ruin your perfect version of Minecraft by downloading some little update from Mojang.
When you feel the need to upgrade...say after a major update, just type in your password and be prepared with the latest versions of the M C Patcher and your favourite mods. Also if anything does go wrong, you can just swap back your perfect bin file and everything should be back to normal. That way you keep control over when Minecraft is updated!
I might have some updated textures for the terrain.png file ready this weekend! :smile.gif: I don't want to issue a completely updated pack though, as that usually involves re-patching with M C patcher, as you need to point the patcher at the updated zip pack. However, if you get used to just dropping the latest 'terrain.png' file (the one with all the block textures on, for those not familiar) directly into the zip file in Minecraft's Texture pack folder, then it will just replace the old terrain file and you won't need to change anything, except enjoy any new or improved textures I've come up with! :smile.gif:
Now that people have started to mention it, the sand does seem quite bright (or should I say extra 'yellowy') - Glimmer, is it the same as the original sand texture before the beta update?
Going back a few threads, I still would like to find ONE squid and ONE tree with either a variant on foliage growth or at least different bark - bummer! :/ Like you, I am very reluctant to scrap my (millions) of hours work for the sake of a new world I'm hopping some more epic travelling and more random world generation might help, then I may finally see the Squid textures!
I also understand what you are saying about the cobble/stone textures - I guess it's even harder now squeezing the alternatives on that one terrain.png!
@ Vinegrower
Your efforts are impressive!
The sand is actually darker in this version, but the colour was made warmer! :smile.gif:
I did eventually travel far enough to find 'silver birch' trees, and hate to say it, but on my travels I seemed to be finding squid in nearly every pool of water I passed (if it was deep enough). occasionally I saw them in the distance with their tentacles waving out the water! Lol! Very atmospheric.
I've just finished a 'conifer' tree foliage, tested it in game only to discover the bug that others have reported that many 'deciduous' trees have patches of the conifer texture on them too. Have yet to see a complete conifer tree though. :sad.gif:
So, I raged and rained fire and death to the armors. So I moved on to Cows. I found a nice texture for the "classic" black and white cows, and Im testing how its working right now. Only half done though.
Also, it seems the last patch broke the pack, I suppose using the Patcher will fix this?
EDIT. Here we go. Tell me what you think. The head will be replaced aswell, of course :smile.gif:
aw man! I was working on cows too, as a surprise. :ohmy.gif:
I was going from scratch and basing it on Heck cattle, which are a modern attempt at reviving the extinct Aurochs species. I based it on the Hecks because they look similar to Aurochs (which, in an alternate reality, might've lived past the 1600s into the Victorian era) while still fitting the size and theme of the wild minecraft cows.

Can someone tell me what needs to be done item wise? Im no pixel artist and I've never tried before but ill have to start somewhere and any tips would be great! I've given p on making things in-game! Lol
Many thanks.
What I do is make sure I have an SP save game ready with the item/texture in hand or ready to see. Then (in your case) extract the items.png from your minecraft.jar.
Here's a 32x32 version of the original updated file I plan to use to create from later:
Easiest way to not mess something up, is to save an original, a finished, and working copy of the items.png. Also, when doing the icon from the items sheet, use a 16x16 or 32x32 (and so on) template for each instead of the actual items sheet. This keeps the sizes and placement for easier work. Then just doodle for a bit, save to the items "working" sheet, add it to the pack you are using or the mincrat.jar. ( I sometimes have to use the HD patcher when using a tex pack to get items to appear after changes are made)
I would mess around a bunch at first to get the messups out of the way first...cause I mess up a lot

about 75% done. gotta finish the body details and some leg detail.
this is my first 32x32-style reskin, so I'm reasonably happy with how it's turning out.

hm. should I do it in a realistic duck style or try an eighteenth century robotic duck in the style of Jacques de Vaucanson's 1737 automated robotic duck?

Still working on the water issue, When I am selecting glimmers pack with the patcher I am unable to select the custom water or the custom lava buttons.
Is there something I am missing?
Also I have been using the item sheet from JohnSmith's texture pack which seems to work quite well with this texturepack.

You just can't catch a break....
I think there's been an update to 1.2_02. Which may cause the patcher not to use those options (working as intended there). Mine still allows me to though.
(if it makes you feel better...it's been that kind of day for me too)

anyway, it's done!
I suppose this could be used for any realistic 32x32 pack, really, but I think it fits the established Steampunk pack aesthetic very well.
should I do sheep or chickens next?
