I also wanted to ask, because I have no idea where to find the answer to this, you have alt. block textures, like on iron and gold. How do I use those?
You edit the terrain.png, and move the textures you want to where you want them.
Hey all,
@Glimmar - love this pack man!few things I'm gonna personalize for my own use, but thats because I'm a picky *******. Started working on some new inventory skins, still rough but felt like sharing my progress. Trying to make it look more like a backpack:
[see pic above]
Here is a more standard wood/copper version:
[see pic above]
can't decide which direction i want to go with it. Might keep the cloth for inventory, wood/copper for storage/workbench and make a stone/metal for the forge... hopefully this doesn't turn into a full fledged texture pack...
Beautiful work, mate! A nice level of detail without being overly fussy. I love the little background pic...Wonderful!
Can I offer them at the top for folks? When I get round to some housekeeping, that is. I'm only in very infrequently at the mo'. Hence my apologies to all if I don't get round to replying to everyone's posts...just things that catch my eye for now. :smile.gif:
@ Everyone asking for changes to this and that and in particular my smooth stone texture.
I am very happy with the way the textures play out in my own world (though I'm always looking to improve)...that was the original reason for embarking on this theme. Over time I will add new alternative textures you can all play around with, but you have to understand that the basis for the stone being the way it is, is that I and many others like to build on an epic scale and view our creations from a distance.
Stone is both a natural landscape element and a major building block, and any heavy texturing of that particular block has serious consequences for tiling when seen from a distance. My one BIG bugbear, are textures that look good close up with say 5x5 blocks, but when viewed from a distance are nothing but a mass of unnatural pattern. Once Notch separates 'furnace processed' stone from 'natural' stone then we have the luxury of being a little more adventurous and distinctive with them both. With the same material serving both a natural and manmade purpose, we have something of a dilemma and I have made a conscious decision to be conservative.
Remember also, this is 'Victorian Steampunk'...not a Medieval theme. Hewn stone in a medieval world can be represented in a much bolder form and you'll see that in many other texture packs. In my imagination a steampunk world is a place of smooth stone (both granite and sandstone) and also mouldering concrete (I live in the industrial North West of England and I am surrounded by much industry and many Victorian buildings, so I speak from first hand experience). Hence my smooth stone (which is absolutely nothing like my 'gravel' I might add!) is a compromise I am more than happy with. :smile.gif:
When I get the time, I will supply many other textures and you'll be free to play around with what you think looks right in your world, perhaps even swapping it for one of the abundant cloth/wool textures. You are also free to try to make a stone texture yourself of course...the challenge being to make a 'single' texture that you are happy with both close up and from a distance, and also 'natural' and 'man-made'...and don't forget it has to be 'similar' in colour, and yet have a 'contrasting' pattern, with 'cobblestone' and still fit the theme of Victorian Steampunk...quite a brief for one little 32x32 texture! Have fun!
guys as i asked bevore i wanted a list with blocks as they are in default pack and what they look like in this back
if block ID's would be included i would love it even more because i got myself a mod that makes me able to spawn evrey block in the game but some blocks in the texture pack i just cant figure out what they are in default so i can look up their ID to spawn them
last time i asked this... i dint got anything like this
so if somebody knows where to get one or wants to create one for me i would love it!
Quote from Comrade Temuzu »
After struggling through your grammar, I think you mean a list of blocks in this pack, with their names on it. There used to be one on the first page, but Glimmar propably removed it by accident.
Hi Niels. Here you go:
This was put up on the front page soon after the first time your requested it, mate. It's been up there since...until the recent update, after which I thought it rather superfluous with Notch's new in-game help system. Also there is a distinct lack of space up at the top and wealth of other exciting offerings to show. Hence the conscious decision to remove it. It is of course out of date too, with the Beta 1.2_01 update and all the new blocks.
As much as I would like to help with a more precise comparison between the standard Notch textures and my own, along with block ID's, I really can't justify the time at the moment, with so much urgent work to be completed on the pack.
Perhaps some other kind soul could do this for you. However, I don't really see what would be so difficult to just put a copy of Notch's terrain file alongside my terrain file and cross reference. Drag out a copy of the terrain file from the standard install of Minecraft and download my pack and drag a copy of my terrain file from the zip file. Double click both of them and compare the two sheets side by side. Whatever terrain file you use, the individual texture blocks have to occupy the same square on the sheet or they won't make sense in the game.
*snip*... you have to understand that the basis for the stone being the way it is, is that I and many others like to build on an epic scale and view our creations from a distance.
Great point that I never really thought of. :smile.gif: Also the point of this being Victorian steampunk. I have made the descision that I wanted my streets to be gravel instead of smoothstone, half-stone, or cobble. For my world, asphalt roads are very appropriate, however from the pictures i've seen of the victorian age they are all cobble. What worked well for me was darkening gravel to be as dark as blackwool and bedrock, finaly a use for that stuff. :smile.gif:
Just found out from Tiger4Ruler (thanks, mate) that the 'MorePaintings' Xtreme edition For Beta 1.2_01 http://www.mediafire.com/?56xdi6ipcvtkwq8
and 'Punch-A-Picture' for Beta 1.2_01 http://www.mediafire.com/?nj8r8xrhu5q2tna
mods have been updated. You'll be able to activate Tiger4Ruler's extreme art from within Glimmar's Steampunk zip pack (instructions are in the Tiger4Rulers folder) and use Punch-a-Pic to precisely choose which pic you want on the wall.
I can also now continue work on an 'extreme' collection of gadgets and props, including the 5x5 block sized clock face. I'll let you know when there's something worth seeing. Check out the pics on page 1 to see what can be done with a larger selection of pics to choose from.

That's the idea! Changing textures to get just the precise look you're after. I believe there is an editor mod (how up-to-date it is, I'm not sure) out there that allows you to swap textures around on a terrain sheet to choose just the textures you want. However, I think you can only swap individual textures back and forth from between 'complete' sheets of textures. As I say, not sure if it's been updated and haven't had time to search for it. Might be of interest if someone had the time to hunt it down.
Just simple things like you have done with the gravel would make an interesting collection of alternative textures. There's now't like folk for being individual! :biggrin.gif:
I love your pack, and I have used it for a very long time. I have never really found fault with it.
But, sadly, something happened in the last update that I can't abide with :sad.gif:
The tools look like kids toys, sadly. The yellow is too bright and uncharacteristic for the pack. I humbly ask you for the last items.png which had the other weapons in it. I would edit them in myself, but all I have is preview for picture editing, and that program can't do squat.
Thanks
Ubernox
I am pretty sure this is what you are looking for, from the front page:
For graphic design/picture editing: You may want to try downloading the Open source software GIMP http://www.gimp.org/. It takes a bit to get used, but there are plenty of tutorials out there for anyone who wants to invest the time in learning to use it. At work,I use photoshop and I had to rebind all my gimp controls to match my work settings.

Hi, Ubernox. Glad you like the pack. :smile.gif:
Sorry you don't like the pack with all the items submitted by users. Tiger4Ruler kindly put all those items together because so many people had requested their use, but didn't know how to edit the 'item' sheet.
If you just want the standard inventory items, then AnonCthulhu has given the correct information above. You may need to re-run xau's M C patcher again if you switch to that version of my pack, and if there are any anomilies, it might be better to download a fresh copy of Minecraft, swap texture packs, run Xau's latest patcher, followed by MrMessiah's BetterLight mod and any other mods you're dependent on.
Sorry for the inconvenience, that's why I had two versions (one with user items and one with standard items) on offer at the top. As I keep saying, I will eventually release a version of my pack with my own items, which will be a little more traditional and may be to your liking, but I'm torn in many directions at the moment with work, RL and my own need to have some fun building in Minecraft.
Hope you get things sorted without too many problems. :smile.gif:

Yellow? Last I remember, the only tools that I made yellow were the gold tools, and I even added an alternative. The only other tools that are predominately "yellow" would be the diamond sword, and the diamond pick. For those, I did release alternatives, and if you would like me to change the drill (Even I don't like it, I have no idea of how to make drills), just specify a color, and I could fix it and add it as an alternative.
Also, Glimmar, you wouldn't have happened to have seen my most recent version of the item sheet, would you? I'm just wondering if there was anything you wanted me to add or fix from any of the tools (all "main tools" have at least one replacement).

Sure, I'd be honored if you used them. I'm still working on them for my own use, but if there are any specific changes you would like for your pack, let me know and I'll see what I can do.
Trying to make a UI element that conveys what it is, without being overly complicated can be difficult. Steampunk "artists" are notorious for over complicating everything.
The other problem I'm facing with the various UI pieces is that Notch coded words such as "Inventory," "Crafting," etc. to display with his fonts. So I can make a beautiful image, but his damn grey block text gets overlaid on top of my skin. rather annoying. Wonder if that could be modded out?
On the topic of smooth stone, I agree with your thinking. I really wish that there were two separate textures for natural stone and processed stone. I've seen some texture packs that have a great natural stone, but then if you build with it, suddenly you are living in a cave. Others have a great processed look, but then caves look strange. Cobblestone is ok, but not great in every application. Since you are not going to please everyone, just make what you like and they can mix and match textures as they see fit.
[EDIT]
BTW, here it the latest variation of my inventory screen. Still not happy with it, but in general it is getting there:

I'm using the user content too , also finding all the yellow out of place . The yellow items seem to be steampunk ray guns for every tool wether its stone / iron / diamond , except the spade , which is a red monkey wrench .
I dont mind the ray guns , seen a few on sale I quite fancy myself , just the colour is a little bright . Maybe toned down a little . Overall the user content is quite good :smile.gif:

@Vinegrower: Really great work mate! Well I hope you don't mind I guess the overall flow is a bit interrupted with the pinkish/lavender like elements, maybe you could go more in the tones of your background picture, like the clear and construced look although there seems abit warmth missing, just my two cents.
kinda like this:
I know excatly what you mean with the ugly ass font that is pixelated and interrupts ya good texture. I hope that Notch will allow the use of other fonts, at least crude elements of a multi-language are there.
I see what you are saying. that pink stuff was a pic of this beautiful sheet of copper, but when I started cutting it down, it really lost a lot and isn't reading too well. I'll try messing with it some more tomorrow. gonna redo the invintory slots, the fabric between each slot just doesn't seem right, so I'm gonna try something else.
I'm not entirely set on that background pic, so it may change (and therefore some of the rest of the color pallet may also need to change.) My thought with it is that this is the player's backback, and that is a picture of his home to remind him of the past as he explores this new fronter. I know, way over thought for an inventory screen, but thats how I roll.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. the Mapping & Modding section is a night and day difference from the Beta forums, think I'll just stay here from now on.

Well...like I said above, the auth server maybe funktifying (yes it's a werd...now) things a bit for any kinda of updating. But if you already have 1.2_01, and Glimmar's latest version, you should be able to run Xau's patcher with custom water/lava and animated water/lava checked and it will work.
If you can get into the authentication server, then you can rename your current .bin folder (so as to not lose it entirely), and let it download fresh, then try.

latest update, couldn't wait until tomorrow to try out my idea. making stitching in the leather is a pain, but I think it looks awesome.
Also note the engraved "Crafting". While I can't change the actual text, i was able to pinpoint it's exact location to the pixel and can build around it. That is just my proof of concept, I'll come up with something better as I work on that area later.
Deleted the old image links so as to not hijack this thread with my own stuff.

Retired StaffWell...like I said above, the auth server maybe funktifying (yes it's a werd...now) things a bit for any kinda of updating.
"This may hurt a little, but it's something you'll get used to...."
