(Note: Alternate textures are included in a PSD file for the brave hearted.) The pack is now opensource and is hosted at Github where there will be regular updates. Fork away!
Here is a picture of my house in SMP. Differences between smooth and cobblestone a little hard to tell unless you're up close. But overall very clean and fun.
I was thinking that a simple, cartoony look would mesh well with the limitations of such dinky textures (and I love working small and didn't want to move to 32x32).
I tried a few iterations of the cobblestone and I'm not 100% sold on this as being final, myself. I hear you. I'm digging your house, though!
What's great about your pack is that you stray away from what most people are doing which is pumping as much detail into these blocks as possible. You are going for a minimalistic approach while maintaining an overall great look and feel. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, Scott. I was going for a creme-mint color. I figure 90% of what you see above ground is the green, so it better be good. I think the mint goes well with a chocolate brown for the dirt.
MCWB, thanks. I'm trying!
More practice:
Starting to get the hang of characters. Mr T. has a mohawk, ear-ring feather, beard, and eyebrows that float on the extra accessories layer.
Just updated the terrain.png with a new processed wood tile. The old one was a bit funky in the plank size. It looked more like bricks than wood. Hope this fixes it.
I like that grass color. The yellow-green hue would clash a bit with my overall color scheme, I think. That's probably the best hue for a realistic texture pack that I've seen, though.
OMG your pack is just perfect!!!
No, really! You did some awesome job here :]
But I just think that the grass a little bit too green, the color is too strong, but that's just me.
And I will download and use your pack as soon as you finish it :]]]
EDIT: Oh by the way, you said some games with minimalist graphics, but take a look at Animal Crossing (Wii, DS , Gamecube) as well, in case you need more inspiration.
I'm really looking foward to this patch.
maybe trying to do minimalist armor as well? I was thinking like, for exemple, the leather one could have only one shoulder or, maybe a chest strap thingie like Seiya's? I think it's intended to protect the heart. Oh well. Also, i'm not pixel artist, nor I have idea if the armor stuff must be simetrical :/
I'm going to try to make the armor as simple as possible, sprite-wise. If the more elaborate designs don't gel with the simple textures, I will take them out. So far, so good, though!

and i really love the color of the grass you picked. Some people just make it was just dark, or too of a yellowy-green.

Starting work on the UI. Again, not trying to reinvent the wheel, I just want to retain the feel and make it cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing.

Updated 1st post with better teaser image, added some odds and ends from the UI that I completed.
EDIT: I love Animal Crossing. It's definitely an influence on the style of this pack too.
Working on items. Really trying to differentiate stylistically (and consistently) between the different tool and armor substrates.
