The game starts, allowes me to log in, gets to a black screen just after the Mojang Specifications screen. I left the patcher open to see what was wrong and this is what was happening: (includes me patching my .jar for 128x textuers)

Latest Minecraft Update
To use with the latest Minecraft update:
0. Download the latest patcher
1. Run the patcher
2. Click "Minecraft Folder"
3. Close the patcher
4. In the minecraft folder, delete minecraft.original.jar and the file called "version"
5. Run Minecraft with the launcher and log in to make sure the latest version is downloaded
6. Close Minecraft
7. Run the patcher
8. If Minecraft version is higher than 1.2.6, uncheck custom water and lava.
9. Click Patch
Common Errors Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: nz.<init>(II)V
Custom Water and Lava will not work until the patcher is updated. Uncheck them to work around this error.

The game is trying to render textures at a different resolution than it was patched for. The patcher replaces the default Minecraft textures and this is the only supported use case at this time. Either delete options.txt or switch back to the default texture pack before patching. This will be fixed in future versions.
Outdated Client, Minecraft goes back to older version, etc
Follow the instructions above to remove your backup minecraft.original.jar and patch from the new version. This will be fixed in future versions. The "Outdated Client" message can also apparently mean the server you're connecting to hasn't updated.

So I made a patch to fix the glitches with 32x32+ textures. It puts the water, lava, fire, and compass animations where they belong and makes them the right size. (Actually the compass needle is still/will become too small, but it works.)
IMPORTANT: This patch only works with the downloadable version of the game. If you try to play it in your browser you will just get a black screen. I don't think it is possible for me to fix it.
This patch only works with texture packs installed in your minecraft.jar, or that you install using the "Texture Pack" option on the patcher. If you just have your textures in the same folder as your Minecraft app/launcher, the patch will not work. The texture pack selector inside of Minecraft is not supported, but may work.
Animations are not recommended for tilesets 128x128 or bigger. Drawing these pixel by pixel is incredibly slow, so your game will probably lag intensely.
TROUBLESHOOTING: If you get an error message, post it! Do not just post "I get an error." I will punch you through the internet if you do! It is extremely aggravating and impossible to help with unless you post the actual error message. Also, please do not paraphrase or reword the error message. Use copy and paste, or take a screenshot of it.
If something goes wrong with the patcher, please make sure you're using the latest version in this post. Post exactly what you did, from the moment you downloaded the patcher, and exactly what happened. If necessary, delete the file you downloaded and start over, and write the post as you go.
If something goes wrong in Minecraft, please use the "Run Minecraft" button in the patcher and keep the Log window that pops up open. After the error happens, hit "Copy to Clipboard" on the log window and paste the information in this thread.
HOW TO USE
1. Download and run the latest .exe file below (mac/linux: use the .jar file)
2. If the file fields are not automatically filled in, hit the top browse button and find your minecraft.jar
3. If you don't have an HD texture pack installed, go download one, then hit the browse button next to "Texture Pack" and find the file for it.
4. Click patch.
5. When it's done, click Run Minecraft.

You're running the patcher in a directory with a minecraft.jar, and it's patching that. The other files it needs to run aren't there, so the "Run Minecraft" button isn't working. I don't know if it's the cause of your other problem but you could try running it from a directory without a minecraft.jar or minecraft.original.jar so it patches the one in .minecraft/bin.
Also, Xau, I just wanted to report a small (?) bug, nothing that can't be worked around but just an odd function, when I hit "Run Minecraft" from the patcher the game loads up and works fine in SSP, but if I attempt to log in to SMP it always fails. Correct, the 'Run Minecraft' button does not log you in to minecraft.net's authentication server, so you will not be able to play on any SMP server UNLESS that server is set to not require authentication. You are running in what the vanilla launcher calls 'offline mode'. Xau has said before the button is there to make it easy to test and make sure the patch worked, it's not really supposed to be a replacement launcher.

make sure you dont have the custom boxes checked like it says in op. I was getting the black screen aswell with glimmars. I loaded the texture pack up with minecrafts texture loader and it seemed to work fine.... Not really sure why i needed to muck around with the patcher i didnt see any weird fire blocks anywhere.

I got rid of all the other minecraft.rar files from that directory, I reset the minecraft.rar and version files in the game directory and combined my texture pack with the redownloaded minecraft.rar file.
It seems to all be working now. The custom armour, weapons, tools, the watch and compass, the flames and hellstone. Everything. Thanks for the help. :smile.gif:

Use the patcher, hit Patch, hit Run Minecraft, then hit the Copy to Clipboard button in the log window after it crashes. Then paste it here.
You're running the patcher in a directory with a minecraft.jar, and it's patching that. The other files it needs to run aren't there, so the "Run Minecraft" button isn't working. I don't know if it's the cause of your other problem but you could try running it from a directory without a minecraft.jar or minecraft.original.jar so it patches the one in .minecraft/bin.

I'm guessing it's because that button skips the login screen? Dunno. Not a big deal, just kinda confusing is all.
Correct, the 'Run Minecraft' button does not log you in to minecraft.net's authentication server, so you will not be able to play on any SMP server UNLESS that server is set to not require authentication. You are running in what the vanilla launcher calls 'offline mode'. Xau has said before the button is there to make it easy to test and make sure the patch worked, it's not really supposed to be a replacement launcher.

make sure you dont have the custom boxes checked like it says in op. I was getting the black screen aswell with glimmars. I loaded the texture pack up with minecrafts texture loader and it seemed to work fine.... Not really sure why i needed to muck around with the patcher i didnt see any weird fire blocks anywhere.

I got rid of all the other minecraft.rar files from that directory, I reset the minecraft.rar and version files in the game directory and combined my texture pack with the redownloaded minecraft.rar file.
It seems to all be working now. The custom armour, weapons, tools, the watch and compass, the flames and hellstone. Everything. Thanks for the help. :smile.gif:

Or if running direct from the patcher it just doesnt load with the same error
