patcher is 1.1.8, client is 1.2.2 -.- it fails to work. and loading them manually, anything above 32 by 32 crashes the game. -.-
It patched for 64x64, so it either installed your pack or it was already there. Maybe you should try a clean install of Minecraft, and post the zip you're trying to use. If Minecraft crashes, use the Run Minecraft button to get an error log. Also please don't reply 4 times on the same page to repeat your problem.

Is there any way to patch the texture packs themselves, rather than Minecraft, so i can use the new builtin texture pack loader?
No.

Any chance of Better Grass returning? (or is changing it for every minecraft patch not worth it?)
MrMessiah is working on fixing the miscolored grass.

Xau, Will you be changing this mod to look into the currently selected texture pack for the custom_x.png files in the future?
Yes.

My posts seemed to have been ignored. How do I get the patcher to run on a Mac?
Double click it, or put it on your desktop, run Terminal.app, and type: java -Xmx512m -jar ~/Desktop/mcpatcher-1.1.8.jar

Can someone please tell me the exact specification required for the custom_lava/water_flowing/still textures (eg their size) and exactly what to do with them?
For a 32x32 texture pack, they should be 32x(32*number_of_frames). They go in the root of minecraft.jar. You must have the "Custom" options selected on the patcher.

How would I do this to make it a texture pack instead of the new default?
You can't. The patcher changes the game so only textures of the size you selected will work. You may be able to use the built-in selector to change between other packs of the same size.
Also, the "change texture packs" -button disappears from the mc main menu.
run patcher, click "minecraft folder" button, close patcher, delete minecraft.original.jar, delete the file called version, run minecraft normally and download update, close minecraft, run patcher, patch normally.
I got some type of mess up, so I replaced the files from the bin with the JohnSmith Textures_4 and then patched and so whenever i run it it will show like my last window in the loading screen and/or stop near the end of loading what did i do wrong, someone Pm me please

Its amazing what one man can build. Its even more amazing when a mass of people build.
I'm having a bit of a strange problem. I used the patcher and got a black screen when I tried to run the game. I read that I needed to disable custom water and lava, which I did. The game works for me, but here is where things get strange. My game version reverted to v1.2.1_01. I no longer have the option on the main menu to open the textures folder. Does this mean I need to re-download the game? Everything else works fine, but I would like my game to be the updated version :S
Deleting only the file version won't fix it if you don't remove the minecraft.original.jar. The patcher will replace the newly downloaded mc and patch the old one.

i run the program, and get that. it freezes at 70 precent, and makes minecraft not work aymore. the only way to make it playable again is to delete the bin folder. help please!
When you first run the patcher it copies your minecraft.jar to minecraft.original.jar. Whenever you patch, it reads from minecraft.original.jar and writes to minecraft.jar.
When an update comes out, minecraft.jar gets updated, but minecraft.original.jar is still the old version. If you patch, you get the old version back. If you delete minecraft.original.jar immediately after an update, before running the patcher, everything will work right.

This was happening to me when I first tried using it too. Unfortunately, I can't recall exactly what the problem was, though I do remember it was a very simple thing I overlooked.
Try deleting your version file to force it to update, then manually make a copy of your minecraft.jar and keep it somewhere safe. Then use the patcher and delete the backup it makes, I think the backup was being confused somehow when I was doing it. Anyway, good luck hope you figure something out.

what do you mean by "run with gui or 'java -jar mcpatcher-1.1.8.jar'"?
It downloads as a gui and i dunno how to open.
If anyone can help, I'm still getting this error when trying to install it on Mac OS X 10.6.4.

I've deleted all the files, downloaded the newest version, unchecked custom lava/water. Nothing I do seems to get it to run. I can run the game normally w/o the HD texture FIx and can even get other mods to work.
It does it for me and my friends. it resets the version number from latest client of 1.2.1_01 to 1.2.0_01
Hit the Minecraft Folder button on the patcher. Close the patcher, keep the folder open. Delete minecraft.original.jar and the file called 'version'. Run Minecraft, let it download the latest, then run the patcher again. Next update delete minecraft.original.jar again before you patch.
Ok so I went back a few pages and found this, and I followed xau's instructions. It worked! Sorry I didn't read back a few pages earlier!
I've run into a problem which appears to be beyond my ability to troubleshoot, and would appreciate any suggestions as to what might be the problem and how to fix it.
Using a Macbook Pro 2.6Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, with 4GB of memory and an nVidia GeForce 8600M GT video chip.
Operating system is OS X 10.6.4 (Snow Leopard) with all updates.
Minecraft is the latest version, 1.2.2, freshly downloaded, with all old backups and everything else deleted.
If I run Minecraft by itself, it runs fine, show the correct version number.
If I place a 32x32 texture pack into the new built-in texture directory, then choose it in the texture picker, things still run normally, with all the usual texture glitches (no animated fire, water, or lava, weird ortifacts on bricks and gold blocks and pumpkins and in the Nether, etc). [Tried with Brown & Bloom 1.2 Classic, SMP's Texture Pack, and John Smith's v4.1]
If I use the HD Texture Fix program, and any of the above three packages, then run Minecraft with its normal launcher, the program starts, the correct splashscreen for that texture pack displays, then Minecraft silently exits. The same thing happens if I use the latest version of Minecrafter with the HD 1.1.8 code. If I patch and then run Minecraft from the 1.1.8 applet launcher, I get the following:
The "Run Minecraft" button doesn't work when it's in the same directory as minecraft.jar, can you try it from somewhere else and just post the part of the log after the [java line?

Why won't it launch?
Delete that folder and download the jar again. Don't extract it.

1.2.x release will fix this.
Please post the whole log.

Edit: I had Brown & Bloom working fine post Halloween update using Minecraft 1.2.1, Brown & Bloom 1.2, and mcpatcher 1.1.7.
Any clues?
Thanks in advance,

The "Run Minecraft" button doesn't work when it's in the same directory as minecraft.jar, can you try it from somewhere else and just post the part of the log after the [java line?
