"Can't find minecraft.jar or minecraft.original.jar".

It's a jar file, it opens with WinRAR
Please try the jarfix app tombones linked and run the jar by double clicking. I'm guessing Right Click->Open With is screwing up the working directory. I will update later with an option to find minecraft.jar manually.

Anyway that you can make it so that you still have the textured water (doesn't have to be animated) but the gold and brick blocks are fixed?

That is incredibly awesome, any chance that we'll soon see actual 32px animated tiles instead of the default ones?
I mean, I didn't think this was possible to mod, but apparently it was.
The animation code draws the entire texture itself, so no promises. Water and lava I might do, fire would probably require frames pre-drawn in the terrain.png. If someone wants to make a fire like that I can try to make it work.
The black screen glitch crops up from time to time for no apparent reason. I fixed it by renaming my .bin folder, running Minecraft and letting it create a new .bin folder for me, then I copied over just the bits I needed from the old .bin. It fixes it for me whenever this happens.

SsssssssssssssssssssssssssSURPRISE! "What the FUUUU..." BOOM
So I made a patch to fix the glitches with 32x32 textures. It puts the water, lava, fire, and compass animations where they belong and makes them the right size. (Actually the compass needle is still/will become too small, but it works.) Note the animations don't use textures and will just replace graphics from the pack with the normal look.
To install, first install a 32x32 (512x512) pack like brown and bloom. Then put mcpatcher.jar in your .minecraft/bin folder and run it. It should move the original minecraft.jar to minecraft.original.jar and patch minecraft.jar.
