Over the course of the next week, all the links in this thread will be replaced with adf.ly links in order to raise money for a charity of your choice. We are aiming to raise at least 100$. How will this affect you?
Direct Links to Texture Packs, Mods, Tools, and Maps[1$ per 500 views]
- A few links from each section will be replaced with shortened urls which I can keep track of the stats for (views)
- Most links will have a prefix added to them which will redirect you to an ad page.
- You will have to wait 5 seconds once directed to the ad page. Once the 5 seconds pass a SKIP AD button will appear at the top of the page. Click it. You are now at your desired linked destination.
- You do not have to click anything on the ad and no popups or viruses will attack you >_>
IG Examples[1$ per 1000 views]
- Will have a prefix added to them which will direct you to the image as normal but with a banner ad at the top.
- You can exit the banner anytime you want to by click the X in the top right corner.
PROS
- Short wait for links, no wait for images
- Raising money for charity (No expense on your behalf)
- Keeps me motivated to keep updating this thread
- I get a basic view of how many people from each country use this thread weekly/ daily
- A few texture packs will get an exact count of how many people click on them (these stats will be posted)
- Gives me a basic idea of how having a pack, mod, tool, or map on this list increases the chances of it being noticed
- You can click as many links as many times a day as you want and each will still count
CONS
- You have to wait when clicking links (~5 seconds)
- Some people might click the ads thinking they are the d/l for the texture pack
- Unsure of weather this will raise any significant amount of money
- Might decrease popularity of the thread
I will put up a poll to chose a charity and I'll make a video proof of me donating the money at the beginning of May (when I get all the money raised)
I don't find adf.ly too intrusive... BUT.
You are aware that .ly is a Lybian domain, right?
Also, I find the ads themselves kind of misleading... visitors may click on the "download now" thinking they are getting what they came for when they are clicking on the ad, if they're not very observant.
So, while I DO wholeheartedly support the work that Child's Play does, I don't think this is particular method is the best choice to raise money for that charity. I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is and make a small donation directly to Child's Play, rather than support adf.ly.

There's actually a choice of using a .ly domain or .bb, not sure what the difference would be though (are you saying that the .ly domains might be unstable?)
As for the download thing, I see how it could be a problem, though most people know about this site and realize that it's an ad (i'll also make sure to edit the front page to say that the links are replaced and what to expect) + you could use adblock or a similar app.
I'm not going to just ask people to donate randomly, as the majority can't/ won't. I feel more confident by just asking for 5 seconds of your time. If people start complaining about it I could always remove them. Ads are also family safe and contain no popups.
I was wondering what it was... it's awful, it asks you to download things, and I can't seem to get to the page I want, instead finding slightly inappropriate things and... stuff

No, I'm saying the domains belong to a nation that is currently under the control of a tyrant who is killing his own people. I don't see the gain in getting video games for hospitalized American children by supporting a country that kills its own children.

The post following that reply indicates otherwise. I'm pretty observant and on the first try, even I might have misconstrued the process had I not been occupied for the 5 seconds it took for the "skip ad" button to come up.

while a very noble cause Lilyo...I have to agree with HeadHunter.. the fact that adf.ly is in fact a lybian site is what has kept me from using it myself. the .bb alternative I have no problem with however as it is barbados.. other than questionable banks(aren't they all?)..it is a nation, while independent, is under the Queen of England's control.

Well, I did say most. That guy joined 2 days ago and uses creeper smileys in his posts :/
I could always use the .bb domain alternative that they offer... It wont affect the amount of money being raised
I was expecting most people to opose this cause of the wait or thinking theyll get viruses from the ads, not because they dont like the domain lol. Again, you guys can decide until Sunday.
I'm with Grugsy. The Barbados alternative is more palatable. But I think the time invested in changing all that (or the monetary equivalent to whatever that time is worth) could be better spent charitably - volunteering or direct donation. Still, if it helps people who cannot contribute directly to do something, I'm surely not against it.
You're off to a good start with the idea - no I think the key is in finding the best way to make a difference. Keep in mind that "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch".

I won't be actually converting each link as there's a much easier way to do it by just adding a prefix to each one. It'll take me less than 5 mins to do it.
This will also be a nice way to see which of the packs is most popular and how many people from each country are viewing this thread on a weekly basis and all that. Hopefully the new forums will come out soon so I could start making polls to see which packs are most popular and they'll probably be marked in some way (maybe with another image to the right of the display image) so that people will have an easier time finding the top packs.
Also, there's another feature which instead of the page appearing with the ad and then the Skip Ad button in the banner, it automatically directs you to the link you clicked on with an ad in the banner, which you can close by pressing X anytime you want. You earn less money though (not sure how much less)
Doesn't seem to work for thread links though :/
Lilyo sorry to bother but did I post the request properly for my texture pack? It's up there ^
