It's kind of like NEI on Steroids meets a short and to the point Wikipedia with some extra bells and whistles.
Minecraft University (AKA 'MineU' or 'MU') is a fast, custom made Database hosted in the Cloud that currently allows you to view all the important information about a Block, Item, or Mod that you would need to know at a glance. It's kind of like NEI on Steroids meets a short and to the point Wikipedia with some extra bells and whistles. All obligatory stuff is present (Stack Size, Explosion Resist., Hardness, Mining Tool Req., etc.), but more useful at-a-glance information is calculated for you like how many items of x you can fit into a chest, Forge Ore Dictionary and Liquid Registry support, and blocks and items with similar appearance or function.
Minecraft University also features unique tools to help you with Building Projects. EVERYTHING on in our Database has a color, so you can use the Block Color Match tool to find blocks or items that are close to the color you want based on any color you want, one of the 16 dye colors in MC, or based on the overall color of a Block, Item, or Mod.
This Tool is Only the Foundation for Bigger Stuff to Come! What's Coming Next?
I quit my full time job 6 months ago to build this tool. That's my passion and level of dedication. The website that I am proud to share with you today, is only the beginning; a small sample if you will, of..
My vision for Minecraft University;I would like to build a community around building unique and beautiful creations in Minecraft, and supply the community with the tools it needs to create and share awesome creations with other people that also have a passion for the game.
Please show your support and follow us on Facebook or Twitter (@minecraft_uni), to stay apprised of the latest updates. MU is in active beta, and I post new builds of the website to the server every 2-3 days and post about it on these networks as things go live. I would also like to use this thread for development updates, and to collect feedback on what you Steves think of the website.
The next major iteration of Minecraft University will be Beta v0.16, which focuses on community. User profiles are being added, with less Advertisements for active members. Discussion topics and questions can be asked about specific blocks, items, or mods, and users will be able to upload screenshots of their creations. The complete list of new features coming can be found on the Minecraft University Home Page.
This will be a Community, and Everyone Can Help be a Part!
Until I develop advanced communications, you can stay up to date on our daily updates by plugging into our social media channels. Early adopters will be the first to gain access to new features as we build them. It will also help me out a lot to get the community started if you like this project and want to see more and better things from it to share it with your friends and spread the word. I do not have time to market the website and work on it at the same time, so I appreciate each and every person who contributes!
I will be updating this post within the next few days with ways the community can help the site grow. In particular right away I'll be looking for some Minecraft Builds that you guys have made that you will have the opportunity to share!
Searches through all Blocks, Items, and Mods in our Database and prioritizes matches to find the best-fit match for the thing you are looking for - as you type! Planned to come soon: Thaumcraft Aspects in these search results.
Displays all information in the database about this block or item. As of this writing (March 3, 2015) I have added 409 Blocks and 341 Items by hand, which covers every Block and Item in Minecraft 1.8 (some technical blocks like the actual portal blocks are present but hidden from search), and a sample of content from the mods Thaumcraft 4, and Thermal Expansion. The amount of information presented varies a lot from block to block, and only relevant information is displayed to avoid clutter. Extra information provided:
If a Block smelts Into an Item, that item is displayed with information about smelting time and XP. Iron Ore Example
Food items list Hunger and Saturation values, useful Saturation calculations, and all Status Effects from food. Pufferfish Example.
Unfinished Loot Simulator Tool that calculates how many, and what kind of drops you can get from an aggregate number of blocks broken. Factors in Fortune levels and Silk Touch, but is currently buggy so your mileage will vary. If there is demand for this tool, I will complete it in the future.
If a Block or Item that you are viewing has similar content, that content is displayed at the bottom of that page. This makes it easy to find blocks that behave similar, particularly intended for multiple mods that have similar things to each other (furnaces, crafting tables, levers, etc) or look very similar to each other for getting color schemes right in building projects (texture pack support may come in the future.) This feature is fully functional, and contains all data for blocks that use damage values to group similar blocks together, but I have not gone in by hand yet to manually add similar blocks, so this function will improve even more in the future!
This is personally, my favorite tool on the website. You can pick any color that your mind can conceive, and find blocks in our database with the best color match to that block. In this example, I took the color of a diamond block (there is a link from the view block page to do this), and I can find the blocks that would would complimentary with it. If I had Thermal Expansion in my mod pack, the Shiny, Silver, or Tin Block would go well in a building project. Otherwise, Prismarine stuff works pretty well as you can see
Use the picker to choose any color to match that you want. Or if you know it, supply the RGB, HSV, or Html color code.
- OR choose one of the 16 present Minecraft Dye colors to work with
- OR View a Block or Item with a color you like, and click the 'Find Blocks with Similar Color' on that page
Matches are listed from best / closest match to worst, the algorithm is very complicated as color matching is not easy to do due to human perception.
Every Block, Item, and Mod in our Database has a color assigned.
If this is a tool people like and use, I would like to expand it in the future, by providing color pallets, Color Wheel harmonies, and other advanced color theory features!
ALL of the features in Minecraft University support mods (in fact, we treat Vanilla Minecraft as its own Mod internally in our system). To provide a quick demonstration of this ability, I have uploaded a portion of my two favorite mods; Thaumcraft 4, and Thermal Expansion.
Mod pages list basic information about the Mod, show approximately how much of the Mod MU supports, any dependencies that mod has, where to get the Mod, and further down the page you can find the list of Blocks and Items that are used in the Mod. Out of respect for Mod authors, I do not display advertisements on this page, and provide full access links to their websites, social media channels, and financial support.
This is an example of the kind of Tool I would like to create more of that Integrates into a Mod. Blocks and Mods in MU have their Thaumcraft Aspects assigned, which you can view on that Block or Items page, but more importantly, is that you can view an individual aspect, and use this tool to determine the best resources to use. It even optionally calculates Centrifuging up to 3 Tiers above and attempts to sort results by how easy they are to obtain.
Starting out? From this example you can at a glance see that making boats is your best source of early Terra once you have a Centrifuge, or if you have the patience, go and find Clay. Got an automated mine going? Buckets might be a safe bet. Have a really advanced FTB world? Produce Bookshelves en mass and you have Terra for days.
Another practical example is Humanus. A fairly rare resource to get right? All that Zombie farming for Flesh. OR you could use this tool and see that crafting tables which take almost no time and resources to produce will give you all the Humanus you need with a Centrifuge.
Recently Viewed Content
Up to 10 of the most recent blocks, items, mods, and Thaumcraft Aspects you have viewed show up on the top right corner of the page, this is often handy if you need to go back and reference something you were looking up!
Phew. Made it this far? You're a trooper! As a bonus thanks' for reading, here's a bonus feature for you: On the verrryyy bottom of every page of our website you can find some randomly generated Minecraft Puns. Please enjoy and contribute your own! Also, this is a friendly reminder that if you like this website and would like to see it grow, please share it with your friends!
Thanks' LostSoul! I appreciate any and all feedback!
Today I launched the Android App for this project called the Blockidex You can download it free on Google Play. I recommend using it over the website if you are on Android and don't need the extra fancy tools on the website, it's much faster to browse and less clutter that way.
