I'm currently creating a Minecraft video with Maya. If you don't know yet, this is a 3D software. So you have to create everything from scratch, but you have way more control to do what you want. Actually, you can do anything you want ! Just watch "Revenge" or "Fallen Kingdom" by CaptainSparklez and you'll understand what I'm talking about.
So ! For the purpose of this video I'm writing a tool for Maya that allow me to create Minecraft blocks easily. It's a MEL script named ct_mayaCraft, currently in version 1.2.
To install the script :
1. Open the archive.
2. Copy the content of icons folder to Maya's icons folder. (eg. documents\maya\2012\prefs\icons)
3. Copy the content of scripts folder to Maya's scripts folder. (eg. documents\maya\2012\prefs\scripts)
(replace 2012 with your actual version of Maya)
4. Start Maya. (or restart if it was open)
5. Type ct_mayaCraft; in the command line and hit Enter.
And voilà !
The mayaCraft window should be open now. Wait.. if I click a block I can't see any texture !
Oh yeah, because this script is compatible with any texture pack you have one last thing to do:
1. You have to get a terrain.png file from somewhere. You can find the original terrain.png inside minecraft.jar.
2. Now that you have a texture file, click Browse from the mayaCraft window and select your file.
3. Ok. The script will update any block already created, so you can change the textures again at any time.
The discreet move check-box will allow you to keep blocks perfectly aligned by snapping them to the grid.
--- I will update the text bellow when a new version comes out.
Ok, so for the moment a lot of blocks are missing. I'm adding more of them in each version. If you need particular blocks, you can ask me to add them with higher priority.
Please post any suggestion you have, I'd like to do a complete Maya-Minecraft tool, not only a block creation script. I'd like for example to add items (pickaxe, swork, food, ...), and maybe a ready-to-use character rig creator with custom skin support, so you can animate your character in your freshly Maya-crafted world.
If you have more ideas, I'll be happy to hear them.
---
Ok, that's it.
Hey guys, I'm french so if I made any mistake in my sentences I'm sorry. Don't hesitate to correct me.
And if you have any question on the script, I'll be glad to answer you !
---
PS: I'd like to add a screenshot of the script window. I can see the My Media button, but I don't understand how to add an image in this thing. Any help ?
Ok i just tried it out and i like it! One thing you need to fix though is the grass on the grass block. The sides come out pretty good but there is a trace of gravel texture at the bottom. Also the top of the grass block was grey not the grass green color. But anyways, great job!
EDIT: I tried it in Maya 2010 and 2013 64 bit, and it didn't work for either. It returns the following error:
// Error: line 1: Cannot find procedure "ct_mayaCraft"
I followed all installation instructions closely.
By the way, does anyone know an easy way to make minecraft tools in Maya? Minecraft takes a 2D sprite and extrudes it into a 3D shape... is Maya capable of doing this without re-drawing the outline as a CV Curve?
