I have created a C# application using the kinect SDK beta to make a user friendly version of the the kinect with minecraft. It is by no means done but it includes every essential motion in the game, but they are still being worked on.
Updated Finally
Here are the controls:
(for not in inventory) Looking around: Turn your head around to pan the camera around alternatively you can change it so your left hand controls the mouse (when the hand it near your shoulder it stops tracking it). Moving: Walk, the faster you walk the faster you move, if you run then you run in MC. Again it can be changed to just lifting your right foot up. Jumping: Jump, or you can switch it to raising the left foot up (they will also activate walking). Punching: Right arm forwards. Placing blocks, firing arrows: Right arm up. To place a single block is left arm up. Accessing a chest, workbench, etc: left hand down to the hip for 1 second.(these both use the right click, but you must use them in the correct way or else they will screw up the mouse) Going in and out of inventory: Right arm below or in right side pocket for 1 second.
Crouch: Crouch. Swaping items: Right hand out moves right, left hand out moves left.
While in inventory or chest, etc: Mouse: Always left arm, but it is a very fine mouse for crafting and selecting. Left click: Right arm forwards. Right Click: Right arm up.
(note: you must bring your hand back to click again) Leave inventory: Right arm down near pocket area, hold for 1 second.
If you aciddentaly enter it by using the right click command by putting your left hand down accidentally you will notice by your screen wll spin rapidly either try using crouch or press "i" on the keyboard.
What you NEED in order to use:
Comp specs:
Minimum: 2.0 GHz dual proccessor
1.5 GB free RAM
Direct x 9
Not GPU heavy.
Rule of thumb, if you can play vanilla MC with 30 fps on FAR you can run this on tiny.
To update from the previous version, uninstall everything except for Microsoft c# and .Net 4.0 and then install the new things from the sdk and on.
My installation tutorial
Some sample gameplay:
Here is a picture of the application:
Explination of all buttons and textbox meanings:
Start: once "GO" pops up below it, it is safe to start the Tracking by pressing this button. Turn on Video: Turns un the video camera on the kinect to let you see what it sees.(not turning on may increase performance) Turn on depth: Turns on the depth camera and once the kinect sees you, it makes you colored. (reccomended, but may decrease performance) Linear Mouse: The mouse is set on expinential mode to start with, it creates slow/no movement near the center and lots near the edges. Linear makes the movement to distance away grow linearly as you get further away. Hand Mouse: makes the mouse controled by the left hand instead of your head. NonWalking movement: Makes you not have to walk, but instead just lift feet. Make camera full screen: Enlarges the camera to the size of the application. usefull for making videos and proving use of the kinect. Recording mode: automatically adjusts the center of the screen for you so you just need to put the app on the side and MC right next to it. Punching: makes it so you must move you hand back and forth to continue to destroy blocks.
On to the setting
Sensitivity in Game: adjusts the sensitivity while in the game. It is a multiplier so 5 is a lot... Degree of expidentiallity: Short Answer, expidential curves have a "soft spot" near the center where you motition causes litte movement of the camera. The greater this is the smaller the "soft spot" is. It is a multiplier. Longer tecnical answer, I am using a power function to create a slope for movement. It goes like this, get deviation from center, times this degree you specify, raised to a power and again multiplied by the sensitivity. It is like having a graph of a porabala and bending the arms out or closer together. Menu Sensitivity: Changes the sensitivity of the mouse for the menus. Again a multiplier. Height Multiplier: if it seems to be too easy to hit things you make this larger to adjust the hieght scaling and vice-versa. It has a standard hieght scaling though. Screen adjusts: It should find the center of your screen for MC, but if it doesn't adjust these to get it right. (you will notice your mouse moving when it should not be, that lets you know it is not centered properly)
How to use: (Readme included in download)
extract files to the desktop and then run the setup.
run movement tracking and the application will appear.
next choose your settings
Open minecraft in any world and go into your inventory.(make sure you have standard keyset with 'i' for inventory)
If it is your first time using it, turn on one of the cameras and make sure the kinect can see both your head and feet.
Once it says "GO" then you can press the start button.
You will then have control using your kinect.
Since your in your inventory, use your left hand for the mouse.
put your right hand near your pocket you leave your inventory and then you can begin playing.

What I am currently improving:
The fullscreen camera (done)
Head tracking (made better)
right clicking on intractable items (new harder to hit by accident motion)
Tune sensitivity (in progress)
single right clicks (done)
code optimization (new sdk made it dual core + 64 bit)
Better UI
Maybe a text file to save settings
punching motion for more realism
position based moving
What I'm doing and random stuff
There is a lot to it, but im trying to make it for all play styles, but with speed in mind and a good UI. I have very little C# experience, but am self taught.I made this myself. It took awhile to make this, plus i run the minimum requirements. I get about 10 fps while playing, So i cant record a video. I am going to try to make a cell phone video though, but no promises. I could not decide which section to post this in because it is not a mod, it is more an addon or game enhancer. I was supprised no one made one of these already, there was that contest even a couple months back.
I did a lot of testing with various people and they all seem able to use well. I know it has been a while, but i have had a lot of other things to do and kinda forgot. I was planning on doing more work but i do not currently have a kinect i can use (my friend has it). I am trying to get it though and i hope to get a video up in the next month. I expect an update in February after i see what they are doing with their new software.
What do you think? any, ideas, and critisism are appreciated.
Kinda redundant considering that Minecraft is going to be ported to XBLA with Kinect support.

Minecraft for the xbox will be interesting and I will be looking into getting it, but still this is now. The majority of PC only players can enjoy playing minecraft with the kinect with their favorite mods. Though 99.99% of all kinect owners use it with their xbox, im slightly different on that matter. All the kinect games for the xbox i have not cared for so I started to use it for computer games.
I understand I may be dealing with a small audience, but if you try it out it can be lots of fun. There was millions of kinects sold since it came out, and lots of people in my area lots of people have them. It has a relativly low learning curve. (my friends figured it out in 5 minutes) I got a group together to play this and it was fun to watch eachother punch trees and roast pork.

It won't start for me unfortunately. I already have Net 4.0, and I installed the SDK before plugging in the kinect. Then after installing the program as soon as it tries to start up saying "verifying blahblah" it crashes.
Using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.
EDIT - I guess you should make sure to add that they need Visual Studio installed. Since I reformatted my computer and hadn't installed any games yet, it wasn't on my computer, but I simply installed Visual Studio Express 2010, and everything opened flawlessly. Love it, man.

Thanks for pointing that out. I did not think you needed visual studios because there was no compiling on the client side. I guess I was wrong. All computers I have used had visual studios on them. I also noticed I now have to add a licensing agreement or something like that.

I have visual studio c++, c#, and visual basic so that is not the problem.
help, when I open the movementtracking I see a verifiy thingy that closes and then nothing happens! shape game doesnt work either but the skeletal viewer does work. I have visual studio installed and .net framework
did you do them in the order listed and have visual studios 2010?
if not then all you need to do is reinstall the kinect sdk, that is what has worked for me.
That is also interesting that the shapes game does not work. Did you unplug the kinect while it was installing drivers?
(not sure if this works in europe, or outside the US, it should but i could see a problem occuring)
I have installed everything in the right order and have come up with this error box upon running Movement tracking.
Unable to install or run the application. The application requires that assembly Microsoft.research.Kinect version 1.0.0.0 be installed in Global Assembly Cache (GAC) first.

This post is very creepy to have been written exactly the same way lol.
i believe it is do to the fact i compiled it using the first sdk and they have updated it since. to download the old version got here: http://www.mediafire.com/?uqd0spqbt7q8c3p
Little bit of tech stuff but it says i was compiling into a 32bit version so the new 64bit version says it can now compile 64bit. I think this is the issue. I have worked on it and fixed a lot of bugs and also improved sensitivity. I will get a new version out as soon as i get a hold of a kinect and can test it.
I also got a new computer so i plan to make a video.

I know this thread is quite old, but it is really exactly what me and my friend need for our senior project. However, we are having issues with your application. We are running Windows 7 and all the software you recommend. Everything runs fine (we are also running 1.6.2, does this app run on the new client?) But when we go into the game, and open up the app, it never gives us "GO" like you say it should. Skeleton tracking works fine, as well as the shapes game, but still nothing happens. I hope you see this and help us, we'd be much obliged.
EDIT
I've gotten it to give me the go signal, but whenever I use it my character endlessly spins around in circles when I exit out of inventory. Is there a way to fix this, or perhaps disable the app being allowed to turn my character around? I'm able to hook up an oculus rift to Minecraft, so that would allow me to turn around nicely (if I could divert mouse control to the rift). Would I be able to just disable control of the mouse from your app? I mostly need it for the physical gestures for right click/left click and moving, and less for mouse control as I have the rift.
I have created a C# application using the kinect SDK beta to make a user friendly version of the the kinect with minecraft. It is by no means done but it includes every essential motion in the game, but they are still being worked on.
Updated Finally
Here are the controls:
Looking around: Turn your head around to pan the camera around alternatively you can change it so your left hand controls the mouse (when the hand it near your shoulder it stops tracking it).
Accessing a chest, workbench, etc: left hand down to the hip for 1 second.(these both use the right click, but you must use them in the correct way or else they will screw up the mouse)
Going in and out of inventory: Right arm below or in right side pocket for 1 second.
Crouch: Crouch.
Swaping items: Right hand out moves right, left hand out moves left.
While in inventory or chest, etc:
Mouse: Always left arm, but it is a very fine mouse for crafting and selecting.
Left click: Right arm forwards.
Right Click: Right arm up.
(note: you must bring your hand back to click again)
Leave inventory: Right arm down near pocket area, hold for 1 second.

I also got a new computer so i plan to make a video.
