I dont unerstand the use of bbob object to make rivers... you can carve out a nice river, then fill it with water....Even rivers that change elevation are possible, you just have to dam up the rivers at your chosen cataracts. Thus i present an alternative to people who dont want to overcomplicate things.
Anywho mcFerson, id like hear your reasoning of using bbob over just terra-forming a riverbed yourself.
1. scout enough chunks for a big Schematic I made,
2. putting it in with mcedit and loading up the world in worldpainter,
3. edit some basic stuff and make some changes... than merge the map with the current world save, and scout it out,
Than I notice that not all changes are being put trough, mainly "smoothing", I still see hills cut in half, while "painting" hills/fields changes go trough without problems.
Am I doing something wrong, or is it a known problem ? maybe lingering permisions with mcedit/minecraft/worldsave all wantin acces to the save file ?
Also, me sucking at world editing itself could be the problem
when i load my world, i get orange squares in some regions of the ocean encroaching on the island i'm working on. they seem to be in the same spot no matter the map i'm making. i thought at first it was lava, but i looked in 3d view, and it appears to extend from the seafloor to about 3/4 the height limit?
i guess it must have been lava thanks for the speedy response. helped a lot and i was able to fix it anyone want to see the general shape of what my island is going to be?
You need Click on Import Minecraft Existing Map an make your changes protecting your Schematic with the Read Only Option. Then, you have to "merge" the world. And you got it!
Mmm Seems like I a job todo today, thanks for the response!

Sounds like those chunks were marked read-only. When you import a map every chunk with man-made constructs in them (which includes, for example, underground abandoned mines), is marked read-only with a black cross. Those chunks aren't updated when you merge the map, to protect them because the merge process can be destructive. If you do want to update them, you have to remove the read-only marker (by selecting the Readonly layer and right-clicking).

You probably flooded the map with lava at some point. There is a long standing bug which will sometimes leave lava or water on the map if you cancel a length flood operation. But as you already found out, you can fix it with the Sponge tool.
I just released version 1.0.0 of WorldPainter. It's not a huge release although it adds a few small features and bug fixes. The main change is that I decided to take WorldPainter out of beta. Welcome to version 1 of WorldPainter!
Added new terrain type: Bare Grass. As the name suggests, this is grass without any tall grass, ferns, flowers or sugar cane generated on top
The Grass, Desert and Beach terrain types will now randomly spawn sugar cane on blocks adjacent to water
There is a new Structures checkbox on the Export screen, which allows you to control the "generate structures" Minecraft option. Please note: it only applies when you use the Populate layer! It controls whether Minecraft will generate NPC villages, strongholds, abandoned mines, jungle temples and desert temples. Note that there is no way for WorldPainter to control exactly which of those Minecraft will generate, or where
Support for Minecraft biome schemes has been removed. You will still be able to load worlds which use a Minecraft biome scheme, but you cannot create new ones. If you want to see what the biomes will be outside the generated map, you can still use the biomes viewer (in the Tools menu) for that
The only biomes related options are now Automatic Biomes and Custom Biomes (in the Edit menu). If you disable both, the biome will be Plains everywhere. Letting Minecraft calculate the biomes is no longer an option, because Minecraft behaves weirdly and occasionally crashes if no biomes are set at all
The Import and Merge processes have been made a bit more robust. If they encounter data corruption in the existing map they will try to continue importing or merging the rest of the map, although the problem chunks will be missing or damaged in the result
Bug fix: fixed a few errors that occurred when exporting worlds with extremely low or extremely high elevations
Bug fix: fixed an error that occurred when cancelling the colour selector on a custom layer configuration screen
Bug fix: fixed an obscure bug that caused an error message when removing tiles from the world
Bug fix: implement a workaround for a bug that caused uninitialised custom terrain types to end up being used in a world. Such terrain types will now render and export as dirt
You will be offered the update automatically when you next start WorldPainter, or you can download it from the first post. Please let me know if you encounter any problems, and enjoy!
Umm, just updated to the new world painter and it will not let me open any of the worldpainter files that I was working on before the update. I got this:

I have installed the new version , but my Avira gives me TR/Dropper.Gen virus
How can I fix it?
There is no virus in WorldPainter. You need to tell Avira to let you install or run the program. I don't know how you do that. Look for some sort of "dequarantine" or "restore" action, and also please report the file as a false positive (look for some kind of "this is not a virus" or "false positive" action).
Avira AntiVir sucks, it is always giving false positives on WorldPainter. Check out this link for the VirusTotal results for the WorldPainter downloads. As you can see, only one product, or no product at all, out of dozens of virus scanners, says that there is a virus in it. That's a clear sign of a false positive (Dr.Web, whatever that is, is currently giving false positives on the download links, and Antivir on some of the files themselves).
I recommend uninstalling AntiVir and installing Microsoft Security Essentials. See this post for more details about why commercial virus scanners suck.
What are you talking about? Downloading (if so, which link exactly)? Running? Opening a world file? Something else?
Edit: if you are talking about the missing commons-cli.jar file bug that prevents WorldPainter from starting up, that is now fixed. You will have to redownload and upgrade the program manually. See my post on the next page for details. Sorry for the inconvenience!
I just released version 1.0.2 of WorldPainter, which fixes a major bug that caused the program not to start up on new installs.
If you installed version 1.0.1, and WorldPainter will not start up, you will have to redownload and upgrade the program manually from the links on the first post, or on the official homepage at www.worldpainter.net. My apologies for the inconvenience!
two questions: is there some sort of zoning tool? so that I could just create a rectangle around a desired area to change it, instead of using a series of squares, if that makes sense? I can't seem to find it.
Second question, but is there a way to change the hotkeys? Mine only recognize the keys on the number pad, which is annoying.
And, I have just a question : when I use a schematic in the «Custom Object Layer»,
this schematic is generate above the ground. How can I do to make this schematic is generated IN the ground.
That is not currently possible with schematics. I plan on adding settings for that at some point in the future. In the mean time you can do it with bo2 files, by placing the blocks on negative levels, below the origin of the object (schematics don't have an origin, that's why it doesn't work for schematics; they aren't really suited very well for this purpose).
What do you mean? They are hard to find? Hard to use? IMHO neither is true, they're easy to find and to use. You might have to experiment a little to find out exactly what the differences are and how to use them with each tool.
No. Maybe I will add some kind of selections-like functionality in the future, but it's pretty complex, so I can't promise anything.
If I may make a suggestion (I don't know if this would be easier or more difficult, but here it is), a good tool would be a hotkey (say, shift) that if held down, locks your cursor to whatever your current X or Y coordinate is, so you can keep your straight lines. So shift would keep it stuck to the X axis, and CTRL, say, would keep it locked to the y axis. Just a thought.
