I have a question. When I started this, I fully intended it to be free and open source. But it's actually taking a good chunk of time to develop this program, so I was thinking about actually charging some money for it once the first version is finished, and not releasing the source. It would be a low price, in keeping with Minecraft's low price, and it would probably be free for the first month or so, so you can try it out. It would be valid for all future versions and it would be more or less on an honour system.
So I was wondering what you guys think. I never actually said I would charge money (although I didn't say I wouldn't either), so I could imagine if you thought it would be unfair to spring that on you now. But on the other hand there might be many people who like the program enough to not mind paying a small price for it.
What do you think? Please use the poll (at the top) to indicate what the maximum amount is you would consider paying for WorldPainter, if any.

I personally use it a lot and would probably pay $10 for it, but $5 is more palatable for most folks here.
TBH it's an experimental third party tool to modify a BETA test version of a game. Best laid plans etc.
That said, it does something unique and incredibly powerful with the Minecraft map system. It's very easy to install, customize, use, and import/export your work. It plays nicely with PhoenixTerrainMod, NBTEdit, WorldEdit, MCEdit, OreGen, CraftBukkit/Dynmap, and Cartograph. It's intuitive and requires zero programming skill. It lets you access and edit critical map data quickly and simply, giving it a whole range of uses outside of terrain editing including changing the seed of an existing Minecraft map. And it's stable as all hell. I have yet to have WP crash, blackscreen, corrupt a map file, or freeze. And I work with maps around 22-25 tiles squared for SMP adventure play.
I'd say those are pretty strong in its favour.
At the very least you should be using adf.ly for your link. After that, you can see how many people are willing to donate to your cause. I don't know the details of legality of selling third party programs and mods based on Minecraft, but it's definitely worth looking into for something that's this fundamentally elegant and powerful.
Hello there creator of WorldPainter :smile.gif:
I LOVE YOUR TOOL!!! IT WORKS GREAT AND SMOOTHLY!!!
But there are a few things I wanted to ask...
Ok so not long ago, I made an AWESOME Map for my Multiplayer Server with WorldPainter. And it is REALLY Big, each piece of land is surrounded by water so the borders are water, the height of the mainland is at 5 of height or maybe 4, and the mountains sometimes reach the complete height, so when I export I choose to have "Water, Water or lava level: 4, which then equals to my water height, so it ends up as a large ocean around my map, but when I tested it in SinglePlayer, I had no problems at all! It worked fine! But once I got it up to my server, if you go to the borders, you reach BIG NEWLY Generated chunks! HOW Can I make it so it doesnt generate new chunks, or something, I was forced to check the "Bedrock Wall" box. So please is there a way to prevent that?
If you need a video to see what I mean, Ill make it!
Im running Windows 7 Ultimate, Minecraft 1.7.3!
BTW, It could be because of an outdate of your software? Because you mention Beta 1.3, that was LONG ago man,It is the best tool to go with MCEdit and every Map Maker should have this! So please update it for compatibility if it isnt, I Would pay for this :smile.gif:
But I cant :tongue.gif: Illegal stuff, you should make a paypal account and Ill send you some bucks there :smile.gif: Oh and adf.ly helps a lot too! Just like Etb said :smile.gif:
BTW, something you should add to the Main Post is a tutorial :biggrin.gif:
THANKS A LOT FOR THIS INSANE TOOL!
You can't make people pay for something like this, you will get in legal issues with Mojang.
I don't think so. I'm not distributing any code or other intellectual property of Mojang, so they have no say in it. Also, Notch stated specifically that it's allowed on http://www.minecraft.net/copyright.jsp:
Any tools you write for the game from scratch belongs to you. (...) Plugins for the game also belong to you and you can do whatever you want with them, including selling them for money.
At the very least you should be using adf.ly for your link.
I don't know, I'm in two minds about adf.ly. One problem with it is that it gives no control to domain owners. Anybody can make a link to my program, and then make money off it without giving me anything. That's why it's currently blocked. Also, I'm no fan of intrusive ads in general, and of getting paid from them in particular. However, since most people here don't seem to mind it, and it seems pretty clear that the majority does not want to pay for the software, I may end up going that way.
Do you have experience with adf.ly? How much money does it actually generate, does anybody know?

That would have happened in singleplayer as well. There's nothing I can do about that; as soon as you reach a place that WorldPainter didn't generate, Minecraft will start generating land itself again. There's no way to tell it not to do that. Even a bedrock wall is not sufficient to keep people in, since you can climb to the top and then walk to the other side.

No, it's not outdated. It says "beta 1.3 or later" and it just refers to the map format, which hasn't changed (much) since version 1.3.

OH, I see, thanks a lot then :smile.gif:
Ill just make it a REALLY large ocean around the main territories so they at least get tired from going that way in a boat and go another way :biggrin.gif: But wait, how about I choose the option "void" I have heard that prevents MC from generating new chunks and makes an infinite falling void bellow the territory. I hope its true :tongue.gif: Ill try it and tell you the results, if not, Ill explore thevoxelbox a bit more and see what they do with the borders, cuz they have continents and stuff but who knows about the borders :smile.gif: Thanks a lot though and sorry for the large post, It normally happens to me, just cant stop writing.
And BTW, I hate Ads, but I like adf.ly for some reason, its not so much time anyway, its not a drag. Also add the donation button :biggrin.gif:
Keep up the GREAT WORK! WorldPainterFTW!!!
You make some good points. And thanks for your kind words about WorldPainter. :smile.gif:
Well, the results of the poll so far do not bode well...

Do you have experience with adf.ly? How much money does it actually generate, does anybody know?
No experience with it at all, other than
1) it pays something like a dollar per 10,000 clicks
2) the vast majority of adfly ads are work-safe and not phishing or trojans, that said you have absolutely no control over the content or target market of the ads.
3) Some people have the source ad sites blocked and will complain the download links don't work.
R-T-B of PhoenixTerrainMod had a Paypal link and an adf.ly linked download. He ran them side by side for a month and then commented that the adf.ly paid him more than the donate. I know of at least three people who sent him twenty bux each that month via paypal, so YMMV but you could net about the same if you maintain interest in your app. As for Paypal, you will not be getting sixty bux a month because most of us don't have that kind of monthly expense budget.
I personally would look into an ad solution that lets you at least narrow down the content and range of ads to your target market, which is PC gamers and game developers. Most of us are not going to click on ads for multilevel marketing or varicose vein cream.
But wait, how about I choose the option "void" I have heard that prevents MC from generating new chunks and makes an infinite falling void bellow the territory. I hope its true :tongue.gif: Ill try it and tell you the results, if not,
No, even that doesn't prevent Minecraft from generating new chunks. It's just much harder to cross, since you can't use a boat or swim across. But you can build your way across the void and reach new land that way.

I think adf.ly seems like a good idea. I don't see anything on it but a skip add button on a blue bar because of AdBlock Plus for Firefox. Waiting 5 seconds isn't that big of a deal, especially with something this nice. I'd rather have that than paying because I can't pay very many things online
No, even that doesn't prevent Minecraft from generating new chunks. It's just much harder to cross, since you can't use a boat or swim across. But you can build your way across the void and reach new land that way.
Oh... I see... Well then Ill just make a much larger ocean and a void at the end, hope that works to keep them away :biggrin.gif:
Thanks though
Well, I hate to bother you Captain_Chaos, but worldpainter farted out again.
This seems to happen at the exact same moments.
After 3 uses, the program stops running. Its the same conflict as last time.
Anyways, i have to make this short because I have to go, but yeah, I could still use some help.
Also Justinkingr, I think ADF.LY is a big deal. It's not bad for programming downloads, but I've seen assholes (hint: soulripper on Pheonix Terrain Mod Thread) try to use it to link TO THREADS. Also, sometimes it ****s up and can cause viruses or surveys that block the skip feature. It's overall sometimes just a huge pain in the ass just to give someone 5 dollars.

The next version of the program will allow you to specify how large the border should be, so you could create a very large border to discourage and disorient people.

What conflict do you mean? Last time it was your configuration file which had become corrupted, and that should no longer be a problem, so it's hard to see how this can be the same problem again. Are you sure you're running the latest version?

You mean like, select in one of the border options, how large it will be? GREAT!!!! I NEEDZ THE VERSION :biggrin.gif:
Guess Ill wait for the next version then, but for now Ill continue to make a new world out of my poor mind :tongue.gif:
Do you have a date in mind? :biggrin.gif:

I am sure I'm running, but I may be mistaken. I'll look into it a bit more.
Also, I was wrong, I mistook soulrippers post. It was a bit.ly not adf.ly, so I have to apologize even though he hasn't even read the message yet. XD
This is great, but I'd really love to be able to right click the raise terrain tools and have it lower terrain instead. Or just some method to lower terrain, really. And a fill tool would be nice--fill in anything at a certain layer that's connected to it with a certain block type.
Thanks. I can't wait!
