I am running an older Macintosh OS. I cannot see anything in the default display, and when I try to select tools, this error message appears and the program quits. Is my OS too old?
BEGIN ERROR MESSAGE

Date/Time: 2012-03-13 18:44:51.044 -0500
OS Version: 10.4.11 (Build 8S2167)
Yes, I am afraid that your OS is too old. I'll look into the possibility of supporting it, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. It's possible that by sacrificing the ability to use tablets it might be possible to get it to run.
This is great and all but is there anyway to change the perspective while editing the world? Top down makes things that are not directly touching the ground impossible to create such as overhangs on a mountain.

There is a 3D view you can open from the View menu or by pressing Ctrl+3. You can press l or r in the 3D view to rotate the view. Note however that this is just a read-only view of the world, you can't edit from it, and it will not allow you to create overhangs, as WorldPainter does not (and may never) support that. You cannot have overlapping terrain. You'll have to go in with tools such as WorldEdit or VoxelSniper to create overhangs, arches, etc.
I think you may be labouring under a misapprehension. If by "unchecked" you mean that you are unchecking the checkbox next to the Read Only button on the Layers panel: that doesn't remove the entire layer from the map, it only removes it from view, just like the checkbox for all the other layers does (as explained by the tooltip)...
Success! But, a couple problems: all the glowstone in my base was replaced by netherrack, and my underwater dome is completely flooded, along with other parts of my base... Considering the size of the dome, I'll probably just use world edit or something, since I will NOT be emptying out that thing by hand again! (it's my portal room as well, so I kinda need it...) But yeah, great tool, hopefully the rough edges can be smoothed out, but other then that, I'm (fairly) happy with the results (...the whole thing about water flooding is a bit... :| I'm not too happy with that)
Edit: I should probably clarify the location of the missing glowstone: under glass or glass + water. though I didn't have glowstone anywhere else, so I wouldn't know if it has something to do with being under glass.

Yeah, your experience is pretty much the same as Nividica's, above, so my reply to him also applies to you. I confess I didn't realise the water thing would happen, so removing the read-only protection is less safe than I thought, but it just goes to show that there's a good reason those chunks are protected by default. Fixing this problem would be very hard to do. It would amount to WorldPainter having to constantly second guess what it is exactly that you want to have happen, and there would be no way to make it so it doesn't guess wrong at least some of time.
You could probably fix the water problem relatively quickly by changing all the water blocks in the bounding box of your underwater sphere to air with WorldEdit, could you not? That would create voids above the sphere as well, but the water above should quickly flood that again I think?
The glowstone thing is a genuine bug, which will be fixed in the next release.
Like I said, I will look into it, but don't get your hopes up. You are in a very small minority, so unfortunately I can't afford to put too much time into it.
Apparently I need to allocate more memory to World Painter. I tried typing in the Xmx1G thing but it didn't work. Where exactly do I need to type this in?

It tells you where. Which operating system are you on?

I made some changes in the latest release in an attempt to support Tiger. Could you test it out and see if it works now?
Check this post for details about which file to edit, and exactly how to change it. 1G might still be a little low, perhaps it's better to go for 4G or something like that (provided your Mac has more than that physically installed).
I have been looking everywhere on how to remove the read-only restriction on chunks? I generated a world using a specific seed but my minecraft is modded with Buildcraft and other mods, therefore even a "virgin" maps has chunks recognized as read only by worldpainter, could anyone explain or link me to the proper resources on how to remove the read-only restriction?
is there a tutorial video for this, or even a user guide?
There is no user guide yet, nor an official tutorial video. There are many videos made by users though, just search YouTube for "worldpainter tutorial". Just keep in mind that some of them are pretty old and WorldPainter is changing quickly.
The best way to get to know it is to experiment and try things out though. Try every tool and every button. Don't forget to try middle-clicking, right-clicking and using the scroll wheel. Check all the menus, and read the tooltips by hovering your mouse over controls. I tried to make it self evident and easy to use, so you should be able to get up to speed quickly.

Thanks, how would I go about doing that?

Thanks a bunch! It's not at 100%, but it's working well enough
Wow, now I feel stupid
