This is quite possibly the greatest thing ever. My only complaint is that it's sometimes hard to find the towers. Either way you deserve copious amounts of Diamonds.
My goodness. Such a rad idea! Adds a Diablo-ish/Elder Scrolls-ish element to Minecraft. I have been very careful to just play Minecraft for what it is, as I only started 3 weeks ago. This idea of this tool alone has already sparked a great interest in exploration in just finding new things to venture out for. Cheers!
My roommates and I run a dedicated server on a PC we built just for Minecraft/fileserver. Our world is getting quite developed (in the small amounts of area we have actually explored). I copied that SMP world to my minecraft save directory on my own PC (while of course backing it up for safety) and ran the batch file on it to randomly generate dungeons for it. I selected "-1" for all the parameters for generation (random), and have yet to see a dungeon no matter what direction I run in and for how long. I guess I'm just curious how to know if this radical tool is actually working. I'm guessing by "procedural" you mean that it is generating dungeons as you explore, and I'm also guessing by the backup warnings; that it creates dungeons in places that you have already explored (which I've read, can wreck what you've made).
I'm running Win7 Home Premium 64 on a newly built system, running Minecraft 1.5_01 on Mincraft Server 1.5 (on my server PC). I've tried a new SSP world seeded "Dungeon" on my own computer, and run the batch file on that to see if I can't find a dungeon, and still no luck.
I promise I'm not complaining at all, my interest in this project is through the roof. This is phenomenal work! I want to implement this into my server so bad, and my roomies/friends are ecstatic!
Thanks for what you've done to this game. I will donate the second I can. Mods and texture packs for this game are radical, but this tool alone adds so much depth to adventure out.

See this post for a potential gotcha when rendering maps with Minecraft still running.
By procedural, I mean it's all randomly generated. There are no predefined cookie-cutter rooms, but only rules about how to construct rooms and hallways. It does not generate as you explore. It just creates a random dungeon somewhere on the map. And yes, because it can only draw into chunks you've already generated, it can destroy things in your maps if you are not careful.
People call this a mod, but it's not. It doesn't modify the game in any way, nor does it run anything while playing Minecraft. It's really a map editing tool that draws random dungeons in existing Minecraft maps.
You can do a couple of things to dictate where the dungeon appears, or locate a random one.
1) The coords of the dungeon are printed on the last line of the output. Use F3 in game to bring up your coords and walk there. You could use a map renderer like mcmap or c10t to help find dungeons. They show up pretty obvious on cave renders. :smile.gif:
Then again, it's kinda fun to know there there is a Dungeon SOMEWHERE. Maybe you'll find it someday.
2) Place the dungeon exactly where you want to using the --offset command line option and set width and length. This is handy if you want to fit it into a particular spot in an established world.

MCDungeon - Procedural Dungeons

I have a problem opening maps on my Mac OS x 10.6.7 system. Since it's short I'll just paste the log here.
Reading items database: items.txt ...
Loaded 231 items.
Reading config from configs/default.cfg ...
Reading loot tables...
Dungeon size: 5 x 5 x 3
Failed to open world: World 9
I've tried every world in my saves directory. The command I use to launch MCDungeon is:
sudo ./mcdungeon.py "World 9" 5 5 3 --term 1
I have all dependencies installed via easy_install. (I don't use python, so you'll have to tell me how to get the list and what their versions are.)
1) Don't sudo the command. You want to run the command as the same user as minecraft.
2) Make sure you're providing the full path to your world. On OS X this is something like ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft (I'm not at my Mac right now... it might be slightly different.)

I may have guessed the OS X path wrong in my post. The -i option should print out exactly the path that it used, so you can compare that to get it correct if you want to run some manual options.
BTW, you can also add options to interactive mode. Something like this works:

You didn't mistype the path. I would have caught that. I double-checked, and in interactive mode it does resolve the user path and the minecraft path correctly. And even specifying the path correctly w/o interactive mode it does not resolve the proper path.

Thank you for the prompt response! I play around with some backups last night, and found a dungeon on my server map right near my original spawn point in the water. It is very gloriously generated, and everything seems to be working perfect :smile.gif:.
I apologize for calling this a mod good sir. I completely understand that it is properly called a tool that modifies a map.
So my other question is, the tool generates only one dungeon? Or will it generate more than one in random, already explored, chunk areas? So if I already cleared out the one I found, can I expect to possibly find another somewhere else? Or can I explore more of my world and run the tool again later to add another dungeon to explore (of course with the risk of it appearing in the middle of my town :tongue.gif:)?
Sorry about my inquiries, this is probably the coolest thing I've seen yet for MC, and it is adding new life to the game. Cheers!

Right now it only generates one dungeon, and running it a second time may overwrite the first dungeon if you are unlucky. I have it on my features list to render multiple dungeons with no overlaps in one pass in the next version.
But again, with a little work and planning, you could use --offset to surgically place a new dungeon anywhere on the map you like.

That is ... very odd. I'll investigate once I have my Mac handy.
I'm happy that interactive mode works though. I am really enjoying these dungeons. :biggrin.gif:
Edit: Last few dungeons I've made (4x4x5) haven't had a tower at the listed coords. For instance, it says that the entrance is in the water. So I go to the coordinates and dig my way down... and find nothing. The same happens for mountains.
This genrator is amazing but it seems in the recent update whenever i click on mcdungeon . exe it opens it up for a brief second. I read what was on it before it closed( many times ) And it said there arent enough arguments? I used launcher.bat instead But it too dosent work because it says the chunck is in a different format or something. It used to work but now i dont know what happened

Still have'nt given any mod a diamond, which is pretty douchey of me

No errors in the output? Are you certain you have completely exited Minecraft, and you're not just leaving it at the main menu? There is a known issue where Minecraft will cache parts of maps even if you don't have them loaded. This also happens with MCEdit and other tools.

You don't run mcdungeon.exe from the icon. This has never worked this way. If you don't use it via command line, use the launcher.bat.
I'll need you to post the actual errors and versions of your software if you want help. "or something" doesn't help me! :smile.gif:

I must have skimmed over the first post then, I'm sure you mentioned it. I was in the game sitting at the menu after generating the map. I'm retesting now with minecraft closed; and will see if I can find it easily.
Result: yep. It's the caching issue. (IE, nevermind.)
i downloaded and such and then i made a tower it worked like a charm on my world and i could see the tower in the distance but when i got closer to it i suddenly froze up i could move my camera but couldn't move... i restarted and when i came back i could move but i had a constant 1 fps and i cant do anything... when i pause it the fps goes back up... i don't understand please help :sad.gif:

(you'll want to add --write to that if you want it to save)
You can also try running it in interactive mode to check to make sure it's locating your maps directory properly:
The volume of a pizza of thickness a and radius z can be described by the following formula: pi*z*z*a
Still won't load the map, even if I give the path from the root directory.
Wow. This shows every map I've got and correctly generates a dungeon!
