I remember, back with Omen being able to generate ruins. At the time, I would explore those ruins in the game, and even take to rebuilding the structures. Now, with all the new features in the game, the new blocks, and all of that stuff, I'd like to be able to do so again - But as of now, I'm unaware of any way to convert old maps from classic and indev into the new format for the Beta, and even then, I'd prefer something that can splice ruins into a current map, instead of having to have a new one.
In any case, some sort of ruins generation for Beta maps would be incredible, especially along the lines of Omen's generation - Cobblestone walls, partially buried structures, the half-block features... Add in some other block use for certain features, and possibly even things like signs or paintings appearing, or chests akin to dungeon chests with random items (maybe things you might find in certain buildings or a town setting, such as wools, dyes, saddles, etc)
MCEdit can be used to convert old maps to new maps. I think the catch is that any coloured cloth is converted to white wool. I don't know whether they've included the new colored cloths from beta already (conversion is fairly simple, but MCEdit seems to be bad at handling the additional bits of blocks).
The method to do this, is to load the old map in MCEdit, hit Ctrl + A to select all. Then select the option to export as a schematic.
Next open your Beta map. Select the option to import a schematic. Select the schematic to import. Drag it around the world. Click to drop it. Make final adjustments. Finalize the import (by clicking the button "import" or something along those lines). Then hit Ctrl + S to save your beta map.
Muahaha, perfect! That works very well, thank you. I cut it to just the soil layer and up to the sky of the ruins map, and then pasted it into a beta map, and it worked out fine with a bit of work. Thank you so much - I didn't realize MCEdit could handle old maps like that, this is huge for me.
I'm already making progress on this map, restoring this city and castle I've generated as ruins.
I'm bumping this, and also I want to ask, what happened to the city terrain generator, the one that MCEdit shows in their thread? (yes, the city shown in the MCEdit thread's main picture was made with an old generator.) I heard that it was discontinued, but it sounds like there's a demand for this kind of thing still. If we (the community, maybe me I dunno if I'll have time) could make a generic building generator, and have tweakable parameters for size, density, choice of location, level of ruination, etc. then maybe we could use such a generator to add old temples and things to the landscape, or to build large cities....
