Well since no one seems to want to help i had the same error, but i found that the map is complete in the temporary storage for mitographer:
C:\Users\Mat\AppData\Roaming\Minetographer\output\other\output\
The error must be somewhere in finalization. I have it working without antialiasing on or anything like that.
Check your log file, because this sounds like it ran out of memory for you as well.
In Windows it's usually in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Minetographer\output\log.txt
(Near the bottom of that file there is probably a error saying java.lang.OutOfMemoryError.)
Not entirely sure about Ubuntu but it might be similarly in your home folder.
And yes, i continue to have this error. Using Overviewer as alternative for now. :/
It would hang like this for me too, and it turns out that it had finished rendering the map, it just got hung up on something at the end. I was rendering an SMP map though so i might be having a different error. I found that if you go to that output folder the map is there and rendered, try opening the .html file if it is there.
whelp ... it rendered it ... kinda ... the folders were created ... as was map.html (but I told it to create it as "Hydrologic.html" to match the world name) but it was blank. A white screen for the web page.
Then ... I told it to erase the output and re-rendered it.
It hung on "initializing"
Manually deleted the %appdata%/Minetographer folder... and re-rendered the map with default options.
Same result as the first time. White web page. Blank. Nothing. Nada.
Assuming this isn't updated for 1.1
Please update! Thank you.

I have been working lately on updating Minetographer. The changes will include many bug fixes and better memory usage. I'm also working on cleaning up the code quite a bit so that I can eventually release the source on GitHub.
NOTICE!
If you're experiencing any bugs at all, please read the forum. There are a lot of bugs with workarounds that have been explained. Unfortunately I do not have a lot of time to answer every question on the forum, I barely have enough time for updating Minetographer as it is. :[
I'd really enjoy someone to give me some kind of detailed tutorial on how to upload and share a rendered map without taking a screenshot. I'm not sure if this has been asked or explained because I'm not going to go through 40+ pages of post. Also, when someone else views the HTML do they get to scroll and zoom around on it like you do in a google maps kind of setup or is it just a boring picture? Answers and an explanation would be great.

Render the map. Download and install dropbox. Drag all the files into the dropbox public folder.
Wait for it to finish uploading. This can take a while depending on the world size. You can save lots of upload
time by not copying the cache folder into your public folder. Once it's done go into the public folder and find the .html file minetographer makes, right click, find drop box and select copy public link. Share that link with others.
To make future uploads a bit easier. Keep the public folder you dump the files in the same name for all the uploads. Delete only its contents and not the folder itself. That way the link will always be live except when when deleting and reuploading a fresh render. This last bit is optional, makes it easier in my opinion.
anyone tested with 1.2 maps yet, wonder if this is compatible or if there is a new version in the work now?
tested on a converted world, Dosn't work with the anvil format, if you try to use this on a converted world it will only render the Level.dat_old file not the new Level .dat_mcr
1.2 worlds don't work. Only ones not converting from MCRegion are viewable, and the ones I did update to Anvil will go through the process of rendering (it might not be the full thing, seems a bit short), but then not produce a viewable output map.

But I have a suggestion/question. You can make the support of customs blocks (comming from a mod) if the texture is in the texture pack?
