Will this application run in tandem with Minecraft? I feel that it would be useless otherwise as Cartograph would be much better and an ingame automap was already shut down.
Whos ingame automap was shut down? This runs beside Minecraft but uses a mod on the client to send map information out via a networking Socket.
It was MrMessiahs minimap mod and this is what citricsquid had to say about it.

OP has been wilfully misleading, there is absolutely no need to worry. Notch stated that he can't distribute modified versions of Notch's work which has always been policy that almost everyone adheres to.
Topic locked to prevent any further drama, for any modders reading this: There's no need to worry, nothing has changed.
Well, I'm sad about the loss of linux support for this EXTREMELY COOL PROJECT, but I can adapt :smile.gif: I intend to try and get it working in wine once you guys release. This is EXACTLY the kind of tool server admins need.
I have read the relevant parts of MrMessiah's MiniMap thread. I never used any of his mods, so I cannot say what they involved, but it did raise a few issues.
Notch's terms and conditions basically say not to redistribute the game, even the modified game, because he needs game downloads to all come from one source (his). This makes sense and I do not do this with my mods. He also says in there that "Plugins for the game also belong to you and you can do whatever you want with them, including selling them for money." Well there is no realistic way to create a plugin without modifying some of his code to load it. Notch is a programmer (duh) so he knows this, and clearly accepts it. Therefore, worry not, we are not stopping development over this.
However, AutoMap is using Notch's texture sheet for the blocks at the moment and I do not have rights to distribute his art. Does anyone reading this have a texture pack I can distribute with the mod? I'd hate to make everyone find and pull Notch's textures out of minecraft.jar and put them in the AutoMap content folder, but I will if I have to :biggrin.gif:
Update: We now are able to pull the default textures out of minecraft.jar at install time so we do not have to redistribute Notch's art. Compatible texture packs (any standard size texture pack should work) will still be usable in AutoMap simply by replacing the png files after it is installed.

You should look at the Java mod called simply "Minecraft Map" or "Minecraft Minimap" depending on which version it is. It is on my site, http://minecraftam.com, and the forum thread for it is in my sig. It may do what you want even better than this project will, and it is already functional and released.
If you want to try the new AutoMap in wine, you will need to install the XNA framework first in it, so good luck!
Progress Update:
Stability and speed were the major problems today. Speed is better than ever, which is to say it runs more or less smoothly in a high end core 2 duo system, and considerably better yet on an i7 quad core with hyperthreading. Memory usage is typically < 200mb. The Socket code that transports map data from the Minecraft client has been tweaked, modified, and improved to the point where it only rarely messes up a packet (damn sockets!!), and even then, the AutoMap is usually fixing it without you even noticing.
It does still crash Minecraft on occasion. Trying to grab blocks that have not loaded is a risky business, sometimes crashing Minecraft, but we don't know a way to prevent crashing short of limiting zoom to something ridiculously small. Does anyone know a way to get blocks in large quantities from Minecraft without risking a crash, or to detect if a block is loaded before trying to access it?
Progress is moving along nicely. We have some new features and we are quickly moving closer to a release! Check the website for full details :smile.gif:
We have no final date yet, but I would guess at an early release next weekend, if not sooner. Be sure to check back often.
Well, you can use my texture pack if you want... Not sure if it's the stuff you want, but you can check it out.
The link is in my signature.
I appreciate this, but it is no longer necessary as we now have an installer which will pull the default textures out of minecraft.jar at install time. Custom texture packs will still work though, just by replacing the png files in minecraft.jar before install, or by replacing the ones in AutoMap's folder after install.
I think it's worth pointing out that enabling SMP ore detection in a program like this may result in a profound lack of diamonds on SMP servers. Though I suppose you could always just travel a LONG way from the spawn.
A few things though;
Just what texture sizes can it use?
16x, 32x, 64x, 128x, 256x, and 516x(I think) are all the texture sizes I know of.
16x being what comes with the game,
32x is what I and a lot of people use now,
64 doesn't seem to have a pack for it,
128x has like 2 or 3 packs, and as for 256x & 516x, I have no idea.
Just what is ore detection? Like what does it do ingame? (I ask cause I can't find any screenshots of it)
It uses standard 16 x 16 pixel textures only right now. Shouldn't be too hard to make it autodetect the size of the texture files and support any size (bigger ones will cost some in terms of speed of course). We've tested with 128x128, 8x8, and even 4x4, but it does not detect size automatically yet.
I will clarify the ore detection in the first post.
Thanks for the description. Definitely something that needs to be toggleable.
Just got an idea from this, add in the same thing for lava, just lava by the way, not lava & water.
This would be toggleable as well, but set to a different toggle key than the ore detection.

Thanks. Lava should be doable, as well as another key for water, both separate.
It is kind of hard to tell where something is located vertically from the map, but the shading does give you a decent idea of position relative to you. Just something to keep in mind.
On that note, you may want to make it so that people can choose which key shows which block(s). This way if people want to they can have each thing set to a different key, or all of them set to the same key.
bp2008 I see that you are coding in C#/XNA
I have moderate experience in XNA but I was going to ask, have you considered Mono for Linux/Mac users?
If I recall correctly, Mono is an extremely high quality port of C# compiler. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mono_(software)
By the way, I voted for the final option (to enable by pressing "o") because it provides the best of both worlds.
The best of both worlds and it all come down to the players anyway. If they want to find ores bad enough they will ALWAYS find a way. As a matter of fact my texture has been modified to cave mode and the sponge has now taken the place of the old look through walls trick. Who uses the sponge anyway? LMAO!

As far as I know, Mono support for XNA never made it far.
As release draws nearer, the majority still wants unrestricted Ore Detection. As you know from reading the first post, this Ore Detection makes it trivial to find rare minerals and common minerals alike. However a significant number of you still want it restricted. We may yet go with a compromise and enable it for singleplayer survival but not for SMP... Thoughts??
Isn't there a way to make small server side plugin/mod that would send back reply to Automap clientside on whether Ore Detection is allowed or not?
Yes. But that still leaves the question, would I want to disable it on servers without the mod, or enable it on servers without the mod? ---- I suppose the only viable option is to disable it in SMP unless the server specifically allows it. I just do not see this being a popular thing among server admins.
I will be changing the poll shortly to help decide what to do about SMP.

I specifically am looking for a minimap along the lines of Minecraft Map, for SMP and with real time terrain updating so I can see and stop griefing quickly. Perhaps I misunderstood the feature list - will AlphaMap be updating the map as it changes? Or is this just a new form of displaying the existing map, like Cartograph or AlphaVespucci, with overlaid player positions?
