"Flash Flood," to basically elevate all surrounding liquids (That is, within a radius of inktier*2) to full level.
Wherein torches are redstone torches, and red is redstone.
I second this idea- I was going to suggest the same idea. However, I would change it from using torches so that this rune could be made underwater if necessary. It should level out all water in a tier * X radius, with the center of the rune being the center of the circle radius that it affects.
Also, how about an instant smelter? You could do something like:
Magic Furnace Rune
[] []
[] []
The chest must have coal in it (any amount). The cobblestone is ink (I guess it could be any material, but all the same), the ores are the ores you want smelted (gold/iron), and the purple is the tier block that decides how many ores you can smelt at once. The amount of ores smelted at once is the same as the tier (tier 1 = 1 ore at a time, tier 4 = 4 ore at a time). Also, the tier of the block determines how many times the instant smelter can be used before the tier block needs to be replaced (possibly tier*2).
Here's the cool part- when smelting, if there is room in the chest, the ores will be removed and smelted bars will be placed in the chest. If not, the items will simply appear for collection where the ores were. The air blocks on the corners could possibly be tier blocks as well to make this more costly to use, so there is more of a trade-off between cheap and slow (furnace) and expensive and fast (this rune).
I would also like to suggest vertical teleporters, same design, just standing upright instead of on the ground. I don't think that's too much work.
I would also like to suggest vertical teleporters, same design, just standing upright instead of on the ground. I don't think that's too much work.
That was suggested multiple times now. But how to align the signature? What is north, what is east? What is east if you look from the other side?
North would intuitively face "up", meaning it would be at the top. South would then, naturally, be the bottom of the signature. Then comes the issue of what to call 'east' and 'west'. In one case, east will always be on the side of the rune that is closer to "true north". By "true north", I mean the direction that a compass would point to. This way, "east" will always face the same way, whether you're looking at it from the left side or the right side. Naturally, west would be on the "south" side of the rune.
Now that's if the rune has the broad side facing east-west. If it is turned 90 degrees, north and south will remain the same (top and bottom, respectively). East will now face "true east" and West will now face "true west". I'll post a picture example in a moment.
*Edit* Also, Zeerix, what did you think about the Magic Furnace Rune?
*Edit2* Here's a picture explanation:
As you can see, the direction the signature will face will be the same no matter what side you look at it from.
Think of it this way: with our current signatures, how are they aligned? They are aligned based on the 4 cardinal directions. The east side of the rune will always be on the east side of the key (middle of the rune), and the same goes per the other directions. When you stand it up, you still use the same concept of basing the direction off of the cardinal directions. I'm sure that the problem that you've encountered with previous suggestions is that the poster simply suggested "the east part of the signature will be on your left", which raises the issue of the signature being different when you approach it from the other side. But going back to our current rune, if you approach the rune from the north (you're standing at the north side of the signature, facing the south part), the east side of the rune is still facing the east. It will always face east, no matter if it is to your left, right, in front of you, or behind you. Essentially, the direction the rune faces does not depend on how you're looking at it.
So with that in mind, I have suggested that the standing teleporter be based on the same cardinal directions, eliminating any issue with approaching it from different sides. Granted, when the east-west side of the rune is pointing north-south, east could be arbitrarily chosen (by the programmer) to face north or south- however, that's merely a technicality. I suggest that east correspond to "true north" in that case, because it seems intuitive to me (most say north-south and east-west, so it kind of just flows).
The same issue that you are raising about direction of approach can be applied to approaching a teleporter from underneath it. You just don't think it's an issue because (frankly) it's simply just not an issue. The same "issue" arises when you rotate the rune 90 degrees to stand upright, but now you see that it is not an issue at all.
If, however, you would like to eliminate any amount of arbitrary decisions regarding east-west to north-south correspondence, you can require the rune to be made such that the cardinal directions always correspond. That is, the rune will be required to be made with the broad side facing north-south, such that the east side of the signature always faces "true east" and the west side of the signature always faces "true west". (In my picture example above, this would be the teleporter on the far left.)
Here's to hoping my rambling makes sense! I've got many more suggestions to make, but I don't want to bog down my posts.
Wow, very nice idea above! I think this deserves to be implemented-- you tackled the exact problem we were having, and it looks like your way will work nicely. As long as we don't need vertical waypoints (that'd mess up the way that ground detection is performed) this can be put in fairly easily. Thanks!
While I have a lot of school today, the usual "sorry can't work, have C++ work to do" thing isn't working anymore! The aspiring indie game dev group I was in has declared winter break, and I'm hoping to use it to get that awesome system implemented that I've mentioned in the past. I might even start 3.0, but I can't promise anything...
EDIT: As part of the initiative to get runecraft back on its feet, I'm thinking about making an official runecraft forum, either on llama.cerberusstudios.net or a free forum service. It'd make it a lot easier for me to ask the community for design advice, as I'd just need to post an announcement and poll-- it'd also make supporting runecraft installation problems much easier since people wouldn't have to sift through a bazillion pages. I might also add a section called "How are you runecrafting?" for people to post stories/screens of their runic contraptions-- if enough people do this, I might get some new ideas based on them. What do you think?

I suggested this a bit back about spawning a bunch of trees. Can a similar rune work the opposite way, harvesting trees in an area into logs and saplings?

hi, ive been playing on a server with your rune mod, and i love it, but i do have a few suggestions, and am really considering donating to support you. Now, off topic a second to something iv'e been seeing that irks me: People suggesting rune patterns that are, well.... not very well thought out. For instance putting lava and water next to each other or on the edge of the rune, or including diamond ore in the design. And this one, im just asking:

I make my return presence with a rune suggestion.
Getting or setting the player's underwater air bar.

Air Bubbles: Simple reusable rune, refills the air bar. Pop a redstone dust on top of the obsidian and have fun staying underwater longer.
is it going to be underwater? if so then uhh, i think people will have problems placing redstone...
okay okay back on topic:
so, i have some suggestions to modify a few current runes (and an idea or two of my own, but i wont talk of that right now)
so, most of the runes have a tier system, which is great, i love that. The better materials you use the better the magic effect is, of course. A few of them dont have tiers though, like the shield rune for instance. I would think it should have a tier option, since most if not all of the other equipment runes have tiers. I would say make it tier=uses, (tier 5 can make 5 sheilds). Its a neat effect, and i really like running to my friends and sheilding them when one spawns a mob of carnivorous humans, but the single use is kind of.... it makes me never want to bother crafting it in the first place
fire pick: if the wiki is correct, its made from only torches, redstone, and redstone torches, i'd suggest making it like the water and underwater picks, but with the center as lava instead of water or glass, respectively.
fire sword: alright, it basically makes the sword a flint and steel, but its pretty much pointless to make since there is pyrokinesis that does the exact same thing with a further range (not counting right click vs left click). Not to mention pyro only takes 1 tier block while fire sword takes 5 tier blocks. The only difference aside from that is pyro's 4 redstone torches. I would suggest to make this... way cooler, as again i'd never build it because pyro exists. Now, what I suggest is make it... a row of fire shot out in the general direction you're looking, 4 or 5 spaces out or something, basically i right click and the ground in front of me for 4-5 spaces forward lights on fire. I dont know what you do for programming but i figure it is possible to tell a players orientation, since our server has a /compass command, and im sure you know where the player is located, and you can edit blocks if you know their location, so it should be possible. Of course there would only be 8 possible directions, NESW and the others like NE and SW, etc.

now, i know this post is a bit long but one more thing, im a bit curious about what you can do with these runes...
first, do these runes have to be instant, or can you have like, a sort of multiple effect thing going on, as in something appears, then it shifts a few times to the right or left, something like that. From what i saw with one of the secret runes im thinking you can.
second, can you make multiple (but not an incredible amount) blocks dissapear for a short time, or change into something else, but keep a memory of what those blocks were, to change back later? Say im mining, and i pull out my pick with this effect on it, i hit a block and all the other blocks around it turn to glass (like the power pick) for a short time, so i can see the area around them. Three seconds later they all change back to what they originally were. Is something like this possible?
i dont want to start suggesting things that aren't exactly possible..., as it'd be pointless
I'm going to assume my idea was overlooked last time, so I'll repost it, since it involves one of the things you asked (growing trees).
Rampant Growth Rune:
(:RFlower: or )
( or :RedShroom:)
(:RFlower: or :YFlower:)
Torches are redstone torches.
Causes all saplings within a 3 block radius ( multiplied by the tier block) to instantly grow into medium-sized trees. Saplings planted too close together will still not grow if unable to however. Torches are redstone.

did that so its easier to comprehend, now, you realize you have water on the outside of your rune, and its going to spill freaking everywhere if you tried making this? ~_~

Good idea, it's probably less confusing to keep the pick runes similar. I might change ice pick too.

Fire Sword was originally supposed to be an on-hit thing, but damage didn't work back when it was added. After further research, I can't hook hits anyway because if I edited that class it'd break hMod. I do have a planned solution though. In the mean time, your suggestion sounds pretty awesome :biggrin.gif:

yeah, I actually thought of that myself. It'd require a storage array for what was replaced, but I think I can manage that.

couple questions, which will help me think of some ideas :biggrin.gif: i have a ton, and need to see what i am thinking is possible (like a previous poster).
Q #1: is it possible to heal a player directly?
Q #2: is it possible to enchant a single item, rather than every item of the same type?
Q #3: is it possible to change the effect of a rune depending on what you activate it with? like with a personal teleporter, go from casting it to storing it for later use by using a specific item?
I am having a issue were Faith is uses what ever chunk its on gets reverted when the server restarts. I save the map every 30 minutes and i type stop in console to stop server. Its not every Faith but each restart new ones seem to revert.
I actually have an idea for a rune or two. Maybe you should have a bomb rune of sorts, kinda like this:

[] [] [] []
For simplicity's sake, if you use this, the rune should extend the range of any TNT you place, which, of course, would affect a a set number of TNT blocks, depending on the tier of the center block. ( )
Just an idea. (If you need or want any more ideas, feel free to let me know. I can probably come up with a very large number of them.)
I'm not able to post in this topic for some reason. I've been trying to reply to a question a few posts back and it won't let me. If this post goes through, I'll be surprised!
Haha! It finally worked!
Anyways, I was responding to Nodom23 a few posts up.

here is several, which use paper/books as the basis for them:
Rune of Healing: Paper - 1 use; book - 5 uses
heals 5 hearts
[]
Rune of Greater Healing: paper - 1 use; book - 5 uses
Heals 10 hearts
[]
Rune of the Bat: Paper -1 use; book -5 uses
damages target player/creature for 1 heart every 3 seconds; heals caster 1 heart every 3 seconds
duration = 3 seconds * tier
Rune of the Vampire: weapon enchant
heals player one heart whenever it strikes a monster/player
Uses = 3*tier
Rune of Caging: Paper - 1 use; book - 5 uses
Surrounds target player/monster with a cage of glass
lasts 4 seconds* tier
Rune of Drowned Sorrows: Paper - 1 use; book - 5 uses
Surrounds target player/monster with a cage of glass filled with water
lasts 4 seconds * tier
Greater Rune of Teleportation: Book- activation
a 7x7 rune which teleports players within its area to given waypoint
Some runes which probably would come to good use:
Tower Erecter/Riser - Creates a square-shaped tower of cobblestone, with a diameter of (2 * keyblock tier), and a height of (4 * ink tier).
Side view:
Top view:
[]
Nether Transformer - A permanent rune that turns the material placed in it's middle into another based on following list:
Gravel -> Slow Sand
Cobblestone -> Hell Stone
Gold Ore -> Light Stone
[] []
[]
[] []
Healing Floor Embedder - An enchantment to any non-block. Using this tool, right-clicking on a block will replace it with a special block (With block-ID equal to the keyblock.). Standing on this special block will heal you 0.5 hearts per 5 seconds. Attempting to mine the block will make it drop the block it replaced, and not itself. Uses of the tool equal to the tier of the ink.
A couple more suggestions for runes. Feel free to use them.
Fortification Rune
A rune that requires LOTS of torches, but is well worth it. The blocks can be diamond, gold, obsidian, or iron. The result? A new kind of block with increased durability, with a different increase depending on the material used.
Ghost Rune
[] [] [] []
[] []
[] []
[] [] [] []
This rune makes you semi-transparent, hence the name. Obviously, it can be quite useful for concealing yourself. While this rune is in effect, mobs cannot see you. Perfect for raiding dungeons.
Summoning Rune
[] [] [] []
[] []
[] []
[] [] [] []
Summons a specific hostile mob, based on the tier of the center block. Using a tier 1 block will get you a friendly mob. (EX: ) Using a diamond block will get you a Ghast. You can figure out what the other tiers give you from there. Zombie Pigmen cannot be summoned using this rune. (Why? Not enough tiers.)
Shelter Rune
[] []
[] []
This rune builds you a different size shelter depending on what materials you use for the blocks. Perfect for travelers who need shelter for the night.
i am experiencing a weird glitch with teleporters. i am good with teleporters, so on the server i play on, i make them for people. they have always worked fine, until i made one today. at first it worked fine, but after a bit i noticed there was something wrong. i realized there must have been something wrong with the waypoint, so i decided to delete and rebuild the waypoint; however, when i tried to delete the waypoint, the usual message that it has been deleted didn't appear. i deleted the whole thing, and filled the area with dirt, but according to the game, the waypoint is still there. in fact, the teleport linking there still works. i have tried everything i can think of, but nothing works.does anyone know what is going on? i am absolutely baffled.
I second this idea- I was going to suggest the same idea. However, I would change it from using torches so that this rune could be made underwater if necessary. It should level out all water in a tier * X radius, with the center of the rune being the center of the circle radius that it affects.

Of course there would only be 8 possible directions, NESW and the others like NE and SW, etc.

that would make it pretty cool if you ask me, and it'd make fighting stuff fun, and mage-like
now, i know this post is a bit long but one more thing, im a bit curious about what you can do with these runes...
first, do these runes have to be instant, or can you have like, a sort of multiple effect thing going on, as in something appears, then it shifts a few times to the right or left, something like that.
How is this different from the Diver's Helmet rune (which now modifies the air bar instead of spawning air)
Been meaning to do that, thanks for the reminder.
In the mean time, your suggestion sounds pretty awesome :biggrin.gif:
you are correct, I can schedule timed tasks on the rune's initial activation. :smile.gif:
yeah, I actually thought of that myself. It'd require a storage array for what was replaced, but I think I can manage that.
My Server Mods:
Runecraft SMP Server Mod - java class replacer for SMP which adds magic runes.
Llamacraft SMP Server Mod - bucket fix, lava nerf, etc.
No idea how long I've been out of the loop. Must have missed that addition.

For simplicity's sake, if you use this, the rune should extend the range of any TNT you place, which, of course, would affect a a set number of TNT blocks, depending on the tier of the center block. ( )
Just an idea. (If you need or want any more ideas, feel free to let me know. I can probably come up with a very large number of them.)

I'm not able to post in this topic for some reason. I've been trying to reply to a question a few posts back and it won't let me. If this post goes through, I'll be surprised!Haha! It finally worked!
Anyways, I was responding to Nodom23 a few posts up.

A rune that requires LOTS of torches, but is well worth it. The blocks can be diamond, gold, obsidian, or iron. The result? A new kind of block with increased durability, with a different increase depending on the material used.

This rune makes you semi-transparent, hence the name. Obviously, it can be quite useful for concealing yourself. While this rune is in effect, mobs cannot see you. Perfect for raiding dungeons.
Summoning Rune

This rune builds you a different size shelter depending on what materials you use for the blocks. Perfect for travelers who need shelter for the night.
Just a few ideas. :smile.gif:
