As of the recent update this doesn't seem to work anymore. Following the setup i've always done (following the guide) ends up with the sounds being instantly overwritten once the game starts. The game instantly ignores whatever you had and doesn't play it and just redownloads what was changed.
Just clarification: It seems to work less now than it used to now, not sure whats up.
Does your program support command line commands? I'm currenting making a texture replacer, and using your program for more functionality for the community would be awesome. If you're cool with that and have command line support, that is, as well as if notch actually allows your program to work again.

It seems to be okay now and again, and maybe its just me, but sometimes it just won't take sounds.
Everytime, yes. Start a game up? I dunno, every time I did it I just logged in and swapped. For me it used to be a 100% chance thing, always working, but after this recent revision it only rarely works, it'll either:
1) "Swap" and the sounds are just normal again instantly like I didn't do anything
2) Everything goes quiet because its redownloading
3) It actually works.
And when 3 happens nowadays I don't feel like quitting to add more stuff to whatever i'm working on because the sound will probably not switch again for a long time. I'm glad to hear it isn't just me. This is what I do:
1) Load up the Swapper program
2) Hit Disable Sound
3) Hit the Load Minecraft button
4) Logon
5) Switch the sounds
6) Go to Options and turn everything on
7) Hope to god it switches this time.
I had made a really goofy sound pack a couple weeks back me and my brother use. I replaced the pig sounds with peewee herman, zombie with tourettes guy, skeleton with bill cosby, cows with johnny bravo, and spiders with Michael jackson. Then when the juke box came out I swapped the records with some generic rap songs.
Since the update the cat song refuses to swap and the other still swaps fine. All other sounds still swap. Upon digging into the files notch seems to have swapped over to a .mus format for songs and added quite a few but the one song still plays off the .wav. From what I understand the .mus format is used by some game companies and old ps2 games for music AND it's also the extension used by some programs for MIDI. Judging by the file size it seems to be the latter. So, unfortunately, it's looking like midi only for music swaps. Don't take my word for fact but I wouldn't get your hopes up on a fix.
Do you -have- to have certain sound files? I want to replace the bow sound with a revolver sound, since friends and I reskinned the bow to a pistol - so I put the .ogg sound in as 'bow.ogg' and go to load that sound pack, I follow the read-me and everything and it still replaces the default sound. :c

That's right, I have a WIP Retexture. Check it out here! Yes! I'm a Communist! ☭
Yeah but it's a pain in the ass, firstly you have to start minecraft, turn off sound. Close minecraft. Start minecraft again, swap the sounds and then turn sound back on. This just automates the turning off the sound and swapping files without having to go through all the folders.
I kind of neglected this thread. To answer some of the questions.
1) You can replace any sound so long as it's location follows the same structure as the normal Minecraft sound set.
(+) You can omit sounds you don't swap
2) Music doesn't swap properly because of the way Minecraft handles music, thus you must swap the music AFTER turning music on. Whatever music plays first won't be swapped until the tracks change (and you must then click swap sounds again to replace the first track) don't ask why. I think it's some sort of CheckSum that is run at the start...
3) I don't know why sometimes the sounds don't swap. I've never experienced this, the program is designed to catch any errors it comes across, if it couldn't replace a file it should alert you that the sound pack failed to install. If a sound pack fails to install without alerting you, I can only assume that this is down to user error...
Most of the issues seem to stem from the music side of things. Of course, there isn't much I can do about this, it's a restriction bound by the way Minecraft handles music compared to regular sound effects. Just hit replace after at least 1 music track has played.
Is there a list of sounds and what to name them in the sound packs anywhere? I've looked in the .jar, but I see only a few sound files, and I don't know where the rest of them are... (I know I could simply download the packs of anyone else who's used TOOL to swap SFX, but I doubt that among everyone there's all files represented...)

:DDD uve GOT to share that insane awesome soundpack!!
So basically, I can replace one of the annoying zombie noises with seananners voice saying brainssss?
OR the sound of a pig dying with seananners saying bacoooooon?
Awesome.
ahahaha, i LOVE the ideas people have for this. my stomach just wants to jump (lol) with imaging pigs saying bacon when dieing and zombies saying brains while walkign toward you XD
awesome idea *thumbs up*'

I'm happy with the sounds for the most part. I only have minor issues. Music needs to play more often and the grunting your character does after taking damage/falling is not so great for people with female avatars.

Any chance of you releasing the source code any time soon? I'd like to be able to try to develop a Linux-friendly version.

Is there anyway to automate this process via key emulation or grabbing the window handle?
