Thanks everyone. Yeah, it would be great to get this to work on infinite maps as well. So cool!
Mangroves are implemented (there you go Towel). Note that they will only go in water shallow enough for them, so if you want trees far out to sea, make sure the height is set large enough.
Frost01: I've been testing using floating maps, everything seems to work... try re-downloading and check your settings. If it's set to "rainforest" the number of trees should be set very high.
Okay, fixed it (I think). Sorry for the bug. I also added a new feature to enable or disable the woody parts (trunk, branches, roots) in case anyone wanted to make a just-foliage forest. Also good for adding more foliage to a forest without adding trunks to get in your way.

I've contacted Notch to see if he would like to integrate these trees into the game. We'll see what he says.

If he does it will be the biggest single improvement he's added since finite fluids. I don't think I'll ever willingly play without these trees again.

I think this would be easy to implement on the finite maps of the current indev.
But on infinite maps, it would be pretty difficult I think. Notice how there's not even regular trees yet? Trees would have to generate as you walk into their zone.

From what I've gleaned from playing (take this with a grain of salt, because I won't pretend I know anything about the game's code), it would seem that trees are an entire segment of the generation progress in the current indev, along with stone, fluids, caves, soil, and flowers/mushrooms. In infdev, we already have flowers, stone, soil, and fluids generating on the fly. I don't think it will be much more difficult for Notch to shove the old trees back in, and only marginally more difficult to create a similar "megatree" script that will run at random to create some awesome trees.
On that note, I think the giant trees would fit in much better on infdev, and I think that they should be fairly rare, and only slightly less rare in forest areas. This means that it's really cool when you find a giant tree, because they wouldn't be everywhere.
In any case, this is an awesome script, and I hope Notch considers implementing a similar concept into the vanilla game.
Yeah I do agree with that, that they shouldn't be EVERYWHERE. Not every tree should be epic, and it should be an astonishing moment when you come across one (like the brick pyramid).

Yeah, I still haven't found a giant pyramid, so I think that is an acceptable rarity for giant trees as well. :b
Giant trees (~100) should be decently common in a forest, IE you should see one every three or so generated sections, with medium trees three to four per generated section, and small filling in the gaps. Shrubbery in desert and plains regions, trees in general as common in plains as medium trees in a forest, etc.
Lots of places you can go with this script.

I don't know. They're pretty damn huge. I'd still have them pretty rare, but slightly less rare, in the forest areas.
I hope Notch decides to tweak the default trees a bit, I'd love to see anything like this officially in the game and ready to deploy at the press of a button. Treehouses, dark forests... it just adds so much.
It did the same for me. I just put the script where my .mclevels were and it worked. Which would be in your Application Data folder and in .minecraft . If you save them to the default place, that is.

Yeah, mine's in there with the saves.
I've named everything correctly and double checked my settings. Everything's fine from what I can tell.
I tried to get a screen shot of the box, but it disappears way too fast.

I get an error when running. I have an EXACT picture of the error.
Error:
I haven't changed ANYTHING below the line that says so. I have only changed the preferences.
Right you are! My mistake, fixed now. The screenshot really helps!
No new features this time, just the bug fix.
No errors! Yay! Time to work on my giant leaf fortress.

I bet it's some simple **** up on my end, but does anyone know a fix?
