I really REALLY want to try this out, but i'm getting an error while running module in IDLE: "IOError: Not a gzipped file"
are the map files SUPPOSED to be gzipped?
Yes. All ".mclevel" files are gzipped by default. It's in the spec. The particular editor you are using should be doing this automatically. Be sure you are using the script on a valid level (open it in indev) before you run the script. If that doesn't work, try g-zip, and then erase the ".gz" extension.
None of it makes any sense to me so could you make a simple step by step tutorial thing :sad.gif:
Download and install Python 2.6.4. http://www.python.org/download/
Download the Forester.py script; place it in the folder containing your MC saves. Saves must be in .mclevel format. If you can open them in indev, that means they'll work with the script.
Open Forester.py with a text editor; change the values according to what you want to happen. Make sure the file names at the top are correct. The comments are pretty self-explanatory.
Open Forester.py with Python Launcher. Progress reports will tell you when it's done.
Load map in indev, and enjoy the leafy goodness!

The forester.py opens a readme thing and in rightclick theres no download
It's 'Save Link As' for me. Either way, I think you could just copy+paste the script into a .txt and rename it to .py.
Don't take my word for it, though.
I personally would love seeing this as /indev/'s default tree generator (not the huge trees, but the smaller ones). It's a shot in the dark, but maybe Notch would be willing to work with you?
Okay Snake, here's the first shot at a rain forest. The new script is uploaded, and there's a new "rainforest" setting.
I've found higher foliage and branch density works well, depending on how thick you want the canopy to be. The results are pretty nice I think. Let me know if this is what you had in mind. If you want denser underbrush, you can always make two passes with the "add" operation, one for the canopy with SHAPE = "rainforest" and then one for the forest floor with whatever other settings you'd like.
Also, I've fixed a small annoyance with the tree height, where the height was generated twice. Could cause some tree placement problems on occasion.
Unison: That would be super sweet, though I'm guessing Notch has bigger fish to fry.
I wonder if there will be some way to implement trees like this on the Infinite maps.... someone go nag Notch about it!

Can someone throw me together a 128 x 128 x 128 or smaller of a map with one huge ass tree on it. I kind of want to build a tree fort... preferably a .dat file.
lol

It's too bad that I can't test them out right now.
