Hello there! I am in the middle of development of a new mod.
Aethereal Forge is a blacksmithing mod that allows you to make armors and tools out of different materials. It uses a component and material system, where components define the shape and size of the item, and materials effects it stats. Creating components are based on real techniques used in blacksmithing, requiring a forge and anvil. And I even have a bloomery for smelting metals. Note: Smelting speed was greatly increased for this video. Without bellows, smelting takes about the same time as smelting a full stack of something in the furnace.

It is similar to Tinker's Construct in the fact that tools can be made out of multiple materials, but it operates fundamentally differently. Materials do not give special abilities to items, however they have resistances to specific enchantments, which is added by giving the items enchanted gemstones. For instance, steel is resistant to a regeneration enchantment, and gold isn't, but gold won't have as good of a protection enchant as steel would.
My ultimate plan is to have a mod where people could add in new components for armor or tools, and be able to add them in independently in resource packs. I spent the last week figuring out how to make modular armor components and the only thing left to make this possible is to figure out how to load extra files from resource packs that are selected. Note: Every helmet uses the same textures. They just use variations of color and different components enabled/disabled.
Materials are adjustable in the config, which will enable any modpack developer the ability to integrate any mod material (Copper, ruby, ect) into the mod just by defining their color and stats.

I'm very interested in the fact that because of your plans that this can branch out a bit. Making clothing is one thing I'm looking forward to. That would be great in RP servers.
