Alright guys, so as some of you may know, I am new to modding. I've always had this idea, although I have not started it yet. So, although the name may be changed later on, it's current name is the realism mod. As some of you may also know, I am a MASSIVE builder. I love building, I'm happiest while doing so, yet, there's always some things I wish were in Minecraft. Things that are in other mods, but not exactly how I would want them. So, now, I will make them myself. Enjoy.
Seasons
I've always found it quite annoying how, in order to experience different weather, you must move your home to a new biome! Another thing is that it NEVER rains in the desert. This is entirely unrealistic, it rains in deserts, just not often. With this function of the Realism Mod, when you create a new world in Minecraft, or open one where this Mod was previously not installed, the date will be set to January 1st, which is Winter. Depending on your spawning biome, you may get constant snow, or almost no rain at all (Desert). Over time, the weather you experience will change based on the season, without the requirement of you moving to a new biome. Not only that, but the time of year will effect the way animals behave. For example, sheep will grow more wool during winter, while many other animals will merely migrate to a warmer area.
Animals
Have you ever wanted to have all of the realistic mobs added in many of the more mobs mods out there, but without the insane and unrealistic mobs? This function adds many realistic animals into Minecraft, as well as their realistic behaviors, such as naturally fleeing from players based on how aggressive the player is towards them. For example, if a player has been hunting deer for a long time, it is going to get increasingly difficult for the player to find any deer, because they will all be fleeing from them.
Player Health
Have you ever wondered how certain things never happen to your player? They never get thirsty. they never get sick, no matter how high they jump from, they never break their legs, they never even get cold! Well, now your player won't be invincible. Your player will get thirsty when in high temperatures, whilst running, or after periods of hard work. If they spend too much time outside in the cold, they very well may get the cold, or even the flu! No longer can they jump off of cliffs and survive unscathed just because they are wearing diamond armor, either. If your play falls from over a certain hieght, there is a chance they will break they're leg. Also, your player will no loner have infinite energy. You MUST sleep, or risk passing out from exhaustion, but don't worry, no longer will time limits stop you from sleeping, now you can sleep whenever you want, and your player will sleep an average of 12 hours, more or less depending on the amount of sleep they have been getting recently. Also, if you decorate your walls with heads, there's a *small* chance you might go insane. All of these things can heal over time with proper care, though some may take longer than others.
*Not really, its pretty much guaranteed you'll loose it.
That's cool and all, really like the idea, but why is this Modification Development? do you need help figuring out a starting point? suggestions? how to do this?

Yes. I've just begun modding, and I'm having trouble. I attempted to follow MrCrayfish's Modding Tutorials, but it seems as if they may be outdated. I'm using eclipse to mod, and, honestly, and can't quite figure out how to do anything more that input it into the Minecraft Initialization Proccess, and make it show up under current mods. Here is what I need to know:
*How do I add an item?
*How do I apply a model made using MrCrayfish's Model Creator to that item?
*How do I name the item?
*How do I give the item an ID?
*How do I make the item a placable block.
I have already made all models and textures for the items, blocks, and gui's, but do not know how to add and/or apply them to my Mod. Please help.
If you would like a copy of the coding I have done so far, just ask.
Also, one I have done all of the listed above things, I need to figure out how to make certain interactions with an item possible. I'm pretty much starting from scratch, and understand that it may be a bit aggrivating that I have such big plans, yet almost no idea how to achieve them, but I would really appreciate any help.
Oh, one more thing. I want to add a seasonal clock, but don't know how to make it move at the same pace as the seasons. I have made no texture for this item for this reason.

What version are you working on? 1.7.10? 1.8? MrCrayfish cover both of those subjects, with 1.8 being an intermediate course.

*Create an Item variable, initialize it, register it and register renders.
*His model creator creates .json files, meaning you need to override your already existing .json file.
*In a lang file named en_US.lang or en_UK.lang or whatever language you want the item in.
*This I can't answer as I use a method that randomly generates an ID for me.
*You don't create an item for that, you create a block.
Again, MrCrayfish covers 4/5 of those subjects.

You should learn the basics before jumping onto this. Trust me, I learn't that the hard way.
Make a mini mod first that might be something stupid such as a dirt tools mod, then progress into the more harder things.
This is a common problem for new modders -- they are too ambitious. It is good to have big goals, but if you can't even create an item, how are you expecting to be able to create complex changes to the entire gameplay?
Start very simply. Learn all the basics plus the major specific things necessary in most mods: including proxies, networking packets, extended entity properties, and events.
Regarding all your suggestions for your realism mod. The one that is most difficult is the seasons part. The other stuff isn't so hard. Animals are just entities and I have tutorials on that, including tutorial on how to change the AI behavior (you can change behavior of vanilla entities pretty easily too). The player thirst, injuries, etc. would just be extended properties that you would process in the player tick event and furthermore render some information in the HUD overlay. But I wouldn't try the seasons part, it would be very difficult. (Making it rain in desert might not be hard though, you can make it rain when you want.)

I also have some tutorials you might find useful: http://jabelarminecraft.blogspot.com/
