Documentation will be coming in the near future, but feel free to ask questions, make suggestions or just discuss recent and future plans!
Plans
The new system (as it stands in my head right now) will require you
to create a crystal growth chamber block that looks like a glass tank
with a porcelain bottom. You'll have to put an essence seed of
insert-metal-name-here into the chamber with aqua regia to grow metal
salts. The aqua regia will get used up but the essence will not.
The aqua regia will be created by dissolving metal ingots in
witchwater. This way you have to have a supply of base metals from
either a villager golem farm to produce iron or a pigman zombie farm to
produce gold to use to transmute into other metals.
The essence crystal seed itself will be created by combining a
diamond with a alchemical essence. I have not decided yet on a decent
recipe for that essence though. I think brewing it sounds like a great
idea. Maybe brew an awkward potion (water + nether wart), then mix it
with ash to get a dull alchemical essence, then a dye color to create
the actual alchemical essence.
Finally, once you've actually grown some salts of your metal of
choice, you put the salts in a barrel of lava to make an actual ore
block.
Some topics I haven't settled on a good solution for. Suggestions on these would be particularly valuable.
* How should the player obtain pumpkin, melon, cactus, sugarcane and cocoa beans? Breaking grass? (NOT sifting)
* How should the player obtain the saplings for other vanilla trees? (also NOT sifting)
* Should nether wart be a mod drop from witches? Zombie pigmen?
* How to balance crucibles better for mod packs that are not skyblock? Possibly make them crack and need repairs?
* The current recipes for sieves are: dirt to stones, gravel to flint, soul sand to nether quartz. What other recipes are there that make sense and are useful, but not overpowered?
Are we getting blaze rods with the doll in witchwater, lava, whatever?
For plant seeds may I suggest something crafted with spider eyes, apples and wheat blocks in witchwater to make something(another fluid perhaps) which is then combined with ash to make a fertilizer that gets different plants on different soils. On Dirt = Pumpkin stem, on farm = melon stem, on sand = cactus. on sand below water = reed. On jungle wood = chocolate. Fern on podzol, Some random mod product on coarse dirt.
For trees it would mutate the leaves. And if used on a lily pad it produces a second lily pad. Or is that too close to witchery and mutands.
You also need a lapis essence seed.
May I suggest that having to go to the nether unarmored is a little hard and sifting a stack of gravel to get enough metal for armor is a pain. I can see a solution. Retain rust as a low gravel drop.
Add another machine: String, Flint, pistons, and stone. It does two things: if put in the sifter frame it sifts a stack at a time with proportional results but makes iron rust from gravel at half yield; Removes part of the grind.
and if placed in a xp farm it checks of there is a air block at world height zero and doubles the valuable mob drops and turns any armor or weapon drops into rust or iron salts for iron and gold salts. You lose those weapon and armor drops.
Making the mod a useful skyblock mod but also usable in other worlds but not overpowering could be a simple process of checking for air at the bedrock layer and slowing down some processes if its not found, crucibles and witchwater formation, etc. The catch is it would then be useless on super flat and I'm already using it on a super flat. Can we detect a superflat world that is not a skyblock?
The real challenge comes with other mod compatibility you don't want 100 recipes. Adding a special mob drop that then combines with Aqua Regia or lava or Aqua regia over lava to make random ores. Then Add a disposal recipe for the ones people don't want that makes more Aqua Regia.
Or is mod compatibility someone else's job?
In the real world Aqua Regia is a mix of a 1:3 mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid a very nasty stuff.
The current recipes for sieves are: dirt to stones, gravel to flint, soul sand to nether quartz. What other recipes are there that make sense
and are useful, but not overpowered?
Once we have Quartz we have Diorite, Andesite and granite. granite is 72 % silica and 14 % alumina So there's your aluminum.
Diorite is a phase of granite with lots of feldspar. The chemical weathering of feldspars results in the formation of clay minerals.
Dust or clay direct from Diorite will not work early game but it's an idea on non skyblocks.
Tin and copper are sometimes found with iron and gold. Aqua regina over iron ore and gold ore might work for your first ore of tin and copper ore, randomly, for making a essence seed.
If your using dyes I would go for cyan or light green for copper, light blue for tin, Orange for iron, yellow for gold, White for aluminum if you're not using granite.
If you go purple for magic ores and pink for some techno mod ores and black for radioactive ores. Then add another layer of color by having them in a colored glass barrel for choices.
Note I have a lapis recipe in another post here. with Aluminum as an ingredient. And nickel with clay as an input. Nickel for clay is a real thing.
PS bacteria in the real world can be used to concentrate metals.

The new system (as it stands in my head right now) will require you to create a crystal growth chamber block that looks like a glass tank

When I first saw all the colored glass barrels I thought you were going with a metal salts in something in the barrel with the color of the barrel defining the product. Too easy? But also intuitive.
I think this is my first reply but forth comment. lol. Been doing it wrong.
I was toying with a totally different way of doing skyblock using rails. No one has done that. The catch is I cant write code to save my life, dyslexia.
This involved a cart that did semi random world gen 80 blocks out from the player and only when the player could not see it (player rotation fun). I can see how to do the code but can't write it. It would be an exploration cart doing a set block (air only): plants and saplings. It was also meant set random stone and ores under them first. Not Ex Nihilo but it's a way to get world spawn that no one has tried.
All you need is enough iron for a cart and rail. 11 ingots. We have that already. Alternatively you could use railcraft wooden rails and wooden cart, slow but a start. The recipe that I thought of was 5 wood half slabs [boat shape] around a map or glass block with the top row of furnaces. Fuel it up set it going come back later to see what's spawned. Crazy but an idea. It could do any mod world spawn. Set block air only protects the tracks and anything powering it.
Thought this might give you some ideas.Sulfur is part of that process and in minecraft Sulfur is equivalent to the gunpowder from creepers. It was called Sulfur once. Sulfur (gunpowder), + metal salt plus something fermented? maybe.
No problems but it's a hard start. I gave myself only one tree on 1 dirt. No grass is a bad idea.
My second attempt at a cobble gen created stacks of squid so I now have 3 x 64 ink. lol.
Are creepers still supposed to be dropping cactus?
Forge updated and I'm having trouble getting into my other two test world's a skyblock that I busted. Don't put a hopper on a crucible. And my dirt superflat.
I assume the new forge update is the fix for some things?
update: forge problem now fixed.
Also got my world back from the hopper crash by using MC edit but the nether was not a void. I'm either using the wrong skyblock setting or the MC edit reset the nether to normal. lol. oups.
is this thread sill alive. just an idea but could you use the different glass barrels for growing the different ores. like depending on the color you get a different crystal cluster. it would leave 8 open slots for different ores not in vanilla and ex nihilio. i look forward to the full release of this or a ported ex nihilio 1 for 1.8.9 trying to make a mod pack with as little mods as possible for a sky block server.
Slimes from skulls is a problem. I only get small slimes and they don't always drop a slime ball. It might work well if it gives several slimes over time and only becomes normal water or an empty barrel if you get a big slime.
The mod creator Erasmus_Crowley has something called a job and family which means he can't do much but bug fixes in the busy time of the working year.
The coloured barrels is a good Idea, I thought that was the plan as soon as I saw them but play balance means that a slightly more complex recipe is needed. It may also be really hard to make JEI play nice with coloured barrels.
Erasmus_Crowley seems to want this to be a balanced and useful mod outside the skyblock context. That's hard.
Insects have copper based blood. Minecraft has giant spiders. Someone in another mod has made the connection already.
A logical copper seed recipe for your first copper salts might be 4 spider eyes, 2 metal salts, 2 charcoal or charcoal blocks and a bottle of Aqua regia or your special alchemical essence.
Re alchemical essence; too many things in minecraft mods are being called essence in my opinion, it's confusing. Alchemical condensate, Perhaps. We should not make the first tier of mod ores too hard because that would make them too late in game play.
For tin I would recommend 4 magma creams, 4 Diorite, 1 bottle of Aqua regia or Alchemical thingy.
For nickel I have already suggested; 1 gravel, 3 clay blocks, 5 coal or charcoal. A real world recipe. Pig iron nickel.
For Aluminium: 4 granite, 2 metal salts, 2 redstone, 1 bottle of Aqua regia or Alchemical thingy. Red stone being representative of the fact that we use electrolysis to get it.
For zinc: 4 raw lamb, 4 raw beef, 1 fire charge. Zinc is a key enzyme component in meat.
For Silver: 4 mycelium, 4 gold ore, 1 coarse dirt. There is a fungi that extracts silver from gold deposits with trace silver in it. Aspergillus niger.
These are the tier two ores in the ore dictionary.
A bottle of aqua regia should convert aqua regia into witchwater when taken.
For tier three mod ores I would add a special block crafted with 2 copper ore, 2 tin ore, 4 Polished Andesite and your expensive Alchemical seed. This special block can be hammered to an Exotic dust that when sieved gives many mod ore drops as dust does in ex nihilo 1. This will give Direwolf20 his automation challenge.
I wanted to toss a thought out there since I'm a fan of the 1.8.9 mod. What about a tree tap? For tree sap that can be crafted into slime balls with sheared grass or leaves?
I found a small clash with MrCrayfish furniture mod the 3 x 3 stick recipe for the sieve mesh make 2 of his blinds not the sieve. A simple fix is to add a shapeless recipe Two Blinds = the wanted sieve mesh.
Is there a way to increase the chance of Ash actually promoting growth, as i find using whole stacks to no avail to be a bit too low, would love there to be a config option so i could tweak it
At the moment it is just easier to build a mob kill box and farm bones>bonemeal than burn sticks for Ash
I think there is a cool down on the grass itself. I found that first one seems to work first go and then it helps to go away and do something else and try later. It is not meant to be a bone substitute for grass as much as trees and will not work at all in low light levels, ie night.
so if i am understanding this sieving gravel sand and dust gives you nothing??? you have to go to the nether and kill pigmen for the gold then transmute that into other ingots..... hmmmm this changes things on my modpack alot. i am creating a modpack of a barren world (very similar to crash landing or regrowth) and if you need to go the nether to get ores and full blocks spawn ghasts anything that isnt a void nether will almoast certainly kill you. definatly making the game harder. as well as making my building of the modpack harder. perhaps i will have to find another way to get ores semi earlyer. i need a much faster way of getting grass for seeds though as hunger overhaul (if that is what it is still called in 1.9.4) will kill you way before you can get to the nether. if there is another means of getting seeds for plants and stuff please let me know. thank you.
Some topics I haven't settled on a good solution for. Suggestions on these would be particularly valuable.

well one of points above "how should the player obtain the saplings for other vanilla trees"
i got few ideas:
1)spruce trees, you can get a seed that its shape is like a cone.. i know that for the cone to start grow up into a plant and then into a tree, but first there must be fire to unleash the seed into the soil.. if i recall.
2)oak tree (where apples we gathered to eat), there is seeds inside the apple as you already know. the seeds inside the apple can be used to plant a oak tree.
3)dark oak tree, i am not sure about that tree.. its the same for jungle, acacia, birch... I dont know how people plants these trees in real life.. but above 1 and 2, i know for sure.
to obatin pumpkins and melon is just fine the way vanilla minecraft is.. its same as the real one in real life, u know what i mean. and sugars.. u could look up how people obtain sugar from sugar canes. last things is coca bean and cactus, i dont have any ideas for these two..
to break a glass, how about remove the glass instead of breaking it. that way we dont have to make more glass using more sands.. by removing... i mean we could just remove the glass by disconecting it from the frame of the planks and put it in our inventory.. but my opinion of how we break glasses in minecraft is not so real.. its annoying that we have to make new glasses everytime we break glass.. especially one moment where we misplaced the glass in the wrong place or location and say "arggh shoot"...
i do not have any ideas for the other points in the quote.. so i hope my suggestion could help give you some clues and ideas on how to make your mod a better mod.

Essentially What you're doing is analogous to bioleaching

Why not add a sieve enchant for fortune and efficiency?
Efficiency makes it faster / click less for the sieve to sieve it, and fortune is obvious, gives more results

just wondering has anybody got the sieves to percentage out right and actually give you what you configured http://pastebin.com/KvvF2z5A
Erasmus_Crowley, You may now need a barrel to summon a guardian. That should not be too hard.
