Due to popular demand (not exactly), I present to you: Default Font for Everythingv0.0 for 1.8.4!
It's the solution for a long-standing peeve of many players from many nations: various accented and non-Latin letters set in the thin fallback font, sticking out like a sore thumb in the middle of the chat or on a button, or really, in any text.
The problem is unfortunately unsolvable using resource packs – hence the mod. It doesn't only provide a default-like appearance to many Unicode characters – it also enables the creation of Unicode font resource packs of any resolution. I also tried to make a few tweaks on the formatting in right-to-left languages, to make it less buggy.
Although even this bare-bones version may satisfy a lot of players who don't need more intricate features, as do poor Hindi here:
...this mod still has a long way to improve. For example, limited compatibility with existing resource packs. (Although, if you have a problem with exotic characters, resource pack fonts are problematic anyway.)
Support of arbitrarily sized Unicode font textures
Support of very wide characters (restrictions apply)
Support of variable spacing and glyph boundaries
Bidirectional text appears correctly even when the language is not using it
Improvements on handling of formatting codes in bidirectional text
§k (random text) now works for any supported Unicode character
§§ now displays a single section sign without any effect on formatting (it still must be pasted though)
Unifont is only forced for Chinese, Japanese and Korean languages
and, of course:
Default font is now one of the most comprehensive bitmap fonts of its size category: it fully supports every Latin-based alphabet, Greek, Cyrillic, Armenian, Georgian, Hebrew and many others; partially supports the Arabic script and Thai. Also, a ton of marks, symbols and dingbats.
Okay, okay, let me be a little proud of it, it took a very, very long time to draw all that by hand.
Character substitution, combining diacritics, ligatures, etc.
A bit of tweaking on the book and quill interface (proper text input, for one)
The Meaning of Life, the Universe, and Everything.
This is exactly what I've been looking for! Thank you so much.
Just one small question...
I read the README and it said to run the install.bat file and follow the onscreen instructions. I tried running the install.bat file, and it brought up a command prompt asking me for a directory. What directory should I put?
Never mind, I solved it by just typing 1.8.8 (the current version at the time of this post). Looks awesome!
