The Better Breeds mod changes at how you look at your animals and how they look at you! This mod adds in genders to animals. So you can't breed animals that are the same gender! Isn't that something we always wanted to see in Minecraft? It also adds in tons of textures for all the simple animals of minecraft! There are also multiple config options to customize the mod to your liking! Now with version 0.3b, the mod adds in pregnancy and the animals hunger and thirst! You must take care of your animals! You can't just throw them into a pen and hope they'll survive! They Need You As Much As You Need Them!
The animals currently switched are:
- The Chicken
- The Cow
- The Wolf
- The Sheep
- The Pig
To breed animals, there are some prerequisites:
- They have to be a male and a female. They can't be both male or both female
- They have to be in the best health. Meaning max health.
- They have to be of the same species... Obviously
- And they have to both be in love!
If the pregnancy option is enabled in the config file:
For the chicken:
To begin, you must get a male chicken, a cock, a female chicken, a hen.
Here are in-depth steps to follow.
1. The first step is to mate both the female and male together with some seeds.
2. Once they are both in love, they will begin to mate.
3. After they finish mating, you must assign the chicken to a nest. To do this you must grab a lead,
and capture the female chicken, once captured, right click on a empty nest and the chicken, will then sit in the nest.
4. You cannot have anything above the nest or else the chicken will get unhappy and break the nest. Then you won't
be able to grow the eggs.
5. Once the female chicken has a nest, it will constantly be in the nest and be outside while the egg incubates.
6. After the alloted time from the config menu, the egg will hatch with a baby chicken!
For all the other animals:
For most of the other animals, it's pretty straight forward. You must mate the male and female together.
Once they have mated together, the female will become pregnant. That is all you have to do, the animal will
then do the regular stuff it normally does until the animal is ready to give the first child. You will know it is
ready when the animal starts making a lot of noises and slowing down a lot. After that, one by one it will born
it's children, until they are all born.
NOTE: These options are customizable in the config.
How to tell an animal's gender:
Note: Every male has a deeper voice, and the female's have a lighter voice. That's also another way to tell them apart.
Chicken:
Here the animals have different parts on their head. The males have ears and a comb (Actually a mohawk)
Male- Comb and visible ears.
Female- No comb and no visible ears.
Pig:
The male pig has tusks while the female pig has visible nipples.
Male- Large Tusks on Head.
Female- Small nipples on belly.
Cow:
Again, the animal's noses are different colors. The male's nose is black but the female's is white.
Male- Black Nostrils
Female- White Nostrils
Sheep:
It's kind of obvious but one of the animal's mouth is a darker red. The male has the dark red mouth, while the female has a pinkish mouth.
Male- Dark Red Mouth
Female- Light Red Mouth
Wolf:
If you look closely, the male has dark green eyes. But the female has dark blue eyes.
Male- Dark Green Eyes
Female- Dark Blue Eyes
Taking care of your animals:
Animals need to eat, just like humans they have to eat and drink, at least once
a day. If the animals aren't fed and given water, they will die! We don't want
our cute little baby chicks to die now, do we? No! So the first thing you need
to do is create a feeding ground!
How to create a feeding ground
Majority of the animals will eat out of a trough. You have to create a long "table"
for the animals to all come and eat whenever they want. Here is what a basic feeding ground should look like:
This works well because the animals are divided, so they will get equal amounts of food, the chickens are given nests for breeding
and the food and water troughs are both filled with material.
To fill a trough with water, you must right click it with a water bucket.
A trough will also fill up with water if it's outside when it's raining.
A block of water above a trough will also fill it up with water. This gives
you a very big advantage to infinite water to your troughs, but it doesn't
always look the best, with a huge pool floating above your troughs. This can
also irritate the animals.
To fill up a trough with food, you must put actual food in there, this means
anything that is edible by humans is edible by the animals. Just right click
the trough and you will put food into it. The food will also evenly spread out
through the trough.
You can also right click on a side of a trough to stop it from connecting from that side.
This allows you to put the food and water troughs together if space is limited.
The food troughs don't have an automated way of replenishing but it shouldn't be that difficult.
What the animal will do
An animals hunger and thirst are different. They have different requirements.
An animal will most likely drink more than he will eat. Also, an animal can stay
hungry three times longer than it can stay thirsty. This is very important because
it means the water trough finishes quicker then the food one.
There are also tons of different textures for each animal. There are 10 textures for all the animals that this mod replaces! When two animals mate, there is a 50% chance (can be changed in the config) that the offspring will have the same texture as one of the parents. The only animal what wasn't textured differently was the Sheep. That couldn't get too much of a different texture because it was color-based but I will try something. Make patterns in the wool, etc.

The Official API for the Better Breeds mod includes tons of stuff to allow cross-mod compatibility!
The API so far adds the ability to:
- Add a new drop to the animal
- Handle the animal's death
- Change the animal's gender and type/texture at spawn
- Change the animal's pregnancy system completely
- Run custom code for every update of the animal
These are all available to you and are EXTREMELY easy for you to create!
Every class that you are allowed is in the main.betterbreeds.api package. This package contains these classes. You extend whatever class starts with Animal_____Handler. Then you register that to the mod.
Every class in that package is also commented for your convenience. You can easily see what does what there too!
NOTE: This does not work at the moment and is being developed! This API will work in the next version of Better Breeds! It's just so that everyone else can at least start working on it!

Prerequisites:
- You must have a complete mod with a working main mod file.
- You must have a flawless Forge setup for a 1.7.10 Forge version of Minecraft
THAT'S IT! Everything else is really simple!
How to include the API in your Eclipse Workspace
First of all, when you download the API itself, you will be given a .zip file, in that .zip file will be a README.txt that also explains how to do this and .jar file that will be the API itself.
Move the jar to the folder where all your other workspace folders are. Where the "main/java" and "main/resources" are. Create a new folder there called "api". Put the BetterBreeds API-[version].jar file in that folder.
It should look something like this:
You will then have to right click on your project and go to "Buildpath -> Configure Buildpath"
Like so:
From there you will be greeted with a screen that looks like this:
Click on the "Libraries" tab and click "Add JARs..."
Point to the Better Breeds API jar file in "src/main/api/BetterBreeds API-[version].jar" You are then good to go! You have then successfully included the BetterBreeds API!
If you want to go one step further and be able to read the class files, you can add the Source attachment by picking the same .jar file again!
To do so, at the Configure Buildpath Screen, click the small arrow next to the BetterBreeds API and click Source Attachment. Click edit on the right and point to the same API .jar file!

You have to start with a blank mod file. Like this.
You then have to add this line: FMLInterModComms.sendMessage("betterbreeds", "api-registry", BBAPIHandler.class.getName());
It has to be sent to "betterbreeds" and also, the key must be "api-registry". If not, it won't work or you'll get a crash.
You have to point to a new class. This class has to extend BBAPIRegistryHandler. If not, you will get a crash.
In that new class you will have to override the handleAPIRegistry method.
It will look like this.
From there it is EXTREMELY simple. You just add whatever you want to the registry by using the registry's methods.
The handler's comments and names will help you with what ever you need to do!
This is all you will need to know to successfully mod with the Better Breeds API!

I am interested in this, and will keep an eye on it. Though I'd encourage you to consider using different models for Male/Female Animals. (Well, for the Cow/Sheep anyway, horns'n'udders'n'all. Chickens are as simple as 'cockscomb' and 'waddle'. Pigs can be trickier, but you could give the male tusks or summat similar.

I think that you should use the vanilla spawners for the animals. Like the Pig spawner and Cow spawner, etc. It looks like this is Mo' Creatures error as my mod isn't shown anywhere in the error report. Thanks a lot for showing the error so nicely. Not many people even do that!
Yeah! That's what I was looking for! I'll watch this mod. Although, just like LunariusH said, I think there should be a more realistic way to tell genders, for example by changing their models. I live in a village so I see that there are some major differences between hens and cocks (cocks being bigger and having a bigger comb for example). Bulls should be unmilkable and cocks should be rarer than hens (my grandma has one cock and like fifteen hens). Hope it helped

If they both work, it would most likely be another reason. It might even be another mod and this one. Hi there I love the mod just downloaded it yesterday. I just have this mod and forge running but
it seems I can't find any horses. Cows and sheep spawn in there place.
also hoping this would work with the chocobo mod. Which oddly enough made my horses spawn for a little wile but after playing a wile Horses dissapered again...
Hmm, that's strange, to be honest, it might not be my mod. it might be another because this mod doesn't do anything to horses. Try it with only this mod on your mods folder and let me know if it's the same error. If so, I'll immediately get working on a fix for this! Thanks for letting me know! Also one more thing, what Chocobo mod are you talking about? The only one I found was one that was for Minecraft 1.1! Haha.

Thanks for the suggestions guys! They're extremely helpful! The problem lies in Hungry Animals. It seems that the mod, much like my mod, adds a whole new animal that branches from the vanilla animal. Sadly, it seems as they are incompatible. This mod really messes up the Hungry Animals AI for the animals. Sorry guys. It would just be incompatible until either I or the Hungry Animals creator come up with a fix. The other mod, Hunger Overhaul seems to be working fine with this mod. Thanks for the suggestions guys! It really helps! Keep up the great reports!

The Better Breeds mod changes at how you look at your animals and how they look at you! This mod adds in genders to animals. So you can't breed animals that are the same gender! Isn't that something we always wanted to see in Minecraft? It also adds in tons of textures for all the simple animals of minecraft! There are also multiple config options to customize the mod to your liking! Now with version 0.3b, the mod adds in pregnancy and the animals hunger and thirst! You must take care of your animals! You can't just throw them into a pen and hope they'll survive! They Need You As Much As You Need Them!
- The Chicken
- The Cow
- The Wolf
- The Sheep
- The Pig
To breed animals, there are some prerequisites:
- They have to be a male and a female. They can't be both male or both female
- They have to be in the best health. Meaning max health.
- They have to be of the same species... Obviously
- And they have to both be in love!
If the pregnancy option is enabled in the config file:
Here are in-depth steps to follow.
1. The first step is to mate both the female and male together with some seeds.
2. Once they are both in love, they will begin to mate.
3. After they finish mating, you must assign the chicken to a nest. To do this you must grab a lead,
and capture the female chicken, once captured, right click on a empty nest and the chicken, will then sit in the nest.
4. You cannot have anything above the nest or else the chicken will get unhappy and break the nest. Then you won't
be able to grow the eggs.
5. Once the female chicken has a nest, it will constantly be in the nest and be outside while the egg incubates.
6. After the alloted time from the config menu, the egg will hatch with a baby chicken!
Once they have mated together, the female will become pregnant. That is all you have to do, the animal will
then do the regular stuff it normally does until the animal is ready to give the first child. You will know it is
ready when the animal starts making a lot of noises and slowing down a lot. After that, one by one it will born
it's children, until they are all born.
NOTE: These options are customizable in the config.
How to tell an animal's gender:
Chicken:
Here the animals have different parts on their head. The males have ears and a comb (Actually a mohawk)
Male- Comb and visible ears.
Female- No comb and no visible ears.
Pig:
The male pig has tusks while the female pig has visible nipples.
Male- Large Tusks on Head.
Female- Small nipples on belly.
Cow:
Again, the animal's noses are different colors. The male's nose is black but the female's is white.
Male- Black Nostrils
Female- White Nostrils
Sheep:
It's kind of obvious but one of the animal's mouth is a darker red. The male has the dark red mouth, while the female has a pinkish mouth.
Male- Dark Red Mouth
Female- Light Red Mouth
Wolf:
If you look closely, the male has dark green eyes. But the female has dark blue eyes.
Male- Dark Green Eyes
Female- Dark Blue Eyes
Taking care of your animals:
a day. If the animals aren't fed and given water, they will die! We don't want
our cute little baby chicks to die now, do we? No! So the first thing you need
to do is create a feeding ground!
How to create a feeding ground
for the animals to all come and eat whenever they want. Here is what a basic feeding ground should look like:
This works well because the animals are divided, so they will get equal amounts of food, the chickens are given nests for breeding
and the food and water troughs are both filled with material.
To fill a trough with water, you must right click it with a water bucket.
A trough will also fill up with water if it's outside when it's raining.
A block of water above a trough will also fill it up with water. This gives
you a very big advantage to infinite water to your troughs, but it doesn't
always look the best, with a huge pool floating above your troughs. This can
also irritate the animals.
To fill up a trough with food, you must put actual food in there, this means
anything that is edible by humans is edible by the animals. Just right click
the trough and you will put food into it. The food will also evenly spread out
through the trough.
You can also right click on a side of a trough to stop it from connecting from that side.
This allows you to put the food and water troughs together if space is limited.
The food troughs don't have an automated way of replenishing but it shouldn't be that difficult.
What the animal will do
An animal will most likely drink more than he will eat. Also, an animal can stay
hungry three times longer than it can stay thirsty. This is very important because
it means the water trough finishes quicker then the food one.
There are also tons of different textures for each animal. There are 10 textures for all the animals that this mod replaces! When two animals mate, there is a 50% chance (can be changed in the config) that the offspring will have the same texture as one of the parents. The only animal what wasn't textured differently was the Sheep. That couldn't get too much of a different texture because it was color-based but I will try something. Make patterns in the wool, etc.

The API so far adds the ability to:
- Add a new drop to the animal
- Handle the animal's death
- Change the animal's gender and type/texture at spawn
- Change the animal's pregnancy system completely
- Run custom code for every update of the animal
These are all available to you and are EXTREMELY easy for you to create!
Every class that you are allowed is in the main.betterbreeds.api package. This package contains these classes. You extend whatever class starts with Animal_____Handler. Then you register that to the mod.
Every class in that package is also commented for your convenience. You can easily see what does what there too!
NOTE: This does not work at the moment and is being developed! This API will work in the next version of Better Breeds! It's just so that everyone else can at least start working on it!

- You must have a complete mod with a working main mod file.
- You must have a flawless Forge setup for a 1.7.10 Forge version of Minecraft
THAT'S IT! Everything else is really simple!
How to include the API in your Eclipse Workspace
First of all, when you download the API itself, you will be given a .zip file, in that .zip file will be a README.txt that also explains how to do this and .jar file that will be the API itself.
Move the jar to the folder where all your other workspace folders are. Where the "main/java" and "main/resources" are. Create a new folder there called "api". Put the BetterBreeds API-[version].jar file in that folder.
It should look something like this:
You will then have to right click on your project and go to "Buildpath -> Configure Buildpath"
Like so:
From there you will be greeted with a screen that looks like this:
Click on the "Libraries" tab and click "Add JARs..."
Point to the Better Breeds API jar file in "src/main/api/BetterBreeds API-[version].jar" You are then good to go! You have then successfully included the BetterBreeds API!
If you want to go one step further and be able to read the class files, you can add the Source attachment by picking the same .jar file again!
To do so, at the Configure Buildpath Screen, click the small arrow next to the BetterBreeds API and click Source Attachment. Click edit on the right and point to the same API .jar file!

It has to be sent to "betterbreeds" and also, the key must be "api-registry". If not, it won't work or you'll get a crash.
You have to point to a new class. This class has to extend BBAPIRegistryHandler. If not, you will get a crash.
In that new class you will have to override the handleAPIRegistry method.

From there it is EXTREMELY simple. You just add whatever you want to the registry by using the registry's methods.
The handler's comments and names will help you with what ever you need to do!
