I recently started learning how to mod, and for my first couple of mods I wanted to focus on my love of tabletop gaming. As you can tell from the title of this post the mod I am talking about right now is one that lets you place playing cards down in your world. I don't know if this type of mod already exists, but every time I looked for one all I found were mods that let you make throwing cards. I just want to play a nice game of poker.
I still need to add a couple of features to the mod such as a "deck" that deals at random and a "hand" to store your cards in, but it is coming along nicely.
Maybe I should fold...
I should also note that I am mostly using standard playing cards as a proof of concept. I plan on using this mod as a way to play more complex card games (akin to Magic: the Gathering) with friends in SMP.
Just a thought but to be honest if you can get this working then CCGs in a Minecraft mod would be huge. By all accounts there is already plenty of scope for blocks to look at adjacent blocks and then run the math and that is the fundamental mechanic behind all strategy card games. I would suggest, however, that you look at something like Microblocks about having these blocks scaled down to normal card size.
I have thought of that as well:
I think taking it down to microblock level might not work well with this type of game play, since you would not really be able to tell what each card is without an overlay and pixel perfect mouse placement. The only downside to keeping them at the size they are is that games with a lot of resource management (M:tG for example) will be a little tough. Maybe stacking cards will help with that though...
I could see this going in any number of directions. Throwable cards some to mind, as does any number of magical card systems.
Either way, its neat to have a basic deck of cards to use while yer waiting for stuff to cook or night to pass (or a hand of poker to decide who gets that diamond you and yer buddy just found!)
I came here because I was looking for Minecraft textures so I can make a deck of Minecraft playing cards IRL. I also love mods, though, and this is looking sweet! I can't wait to see what comes of it.
I was thinking more about being able to play the games on something the size of a 3x2 area so it doesn't look so unusual to have cards the size of doormats. Having them as 1/3 the size of a block so you could comfortably get 2 per block wouldn't be so small that you couldn't see them. Plus it wouldn't be impossible to simply right click the card to have a GUI pop up with a full-screen view of the cards' face.
There's potential to combine this mod with something like BiblioCraft, so we can have them be full size by placing them on the ground, or he can put them in a display case, on a table, or even on a shelf to have them be smaller.
EDIT: I thought of something else, too. if you did M:tG cards, you should make the cards harder to get the more they would cost IRL... (More diamonds and such for the recipe, depending on the value of the card)
Examples would be:
9 Sand for 5 Plains Land
4 Sugar Cane (or 1 Water Bucket [not consumed]) for 5 Island Land
1 Lily pad (or some seeds) for 5 Swamp Land
9 Stone, Cobblestone, Diorite, Andesite, and/or Granite for 5 Mountain Land
9 Wood for 5 Forest Land
64 Diamond Blocks, 64 Gold Blocks, 64 Iron Blocks, 64 Redstone Blocks, 64 Lapis Lazuli Blocks, 64 Obsidian, 64 Books, 64 Lily Pads, and 64 Flowers for the Black Lotus (If you make the Alpha cards) xD
I know it's an old thread and you have probably given up on this project, but I just wanted to ask on the chance that you did finish and maybe forgot to post a link? Also I am wondering if this mod might be compatible with setting up a game of Sequence. My kids like playing Minecraft. I like playing board games, especially Sequence. It's a game where there's a board with images of cards on it, and to win you draw cards and place tokens on the board according to what you have in your hand.

Curse PremiumI'm not ready to release a download yet. I need to add a couple of things, and I have had no time to tinker with it recently.
