The idea for this mod started out when I realized that there was no definitive answer as to how and why monsters existed in the world, and why they all hated humanity.
So this is a small idea with a wide variety of directions it can take. The mod will spawn 1 "mini-biome" per monster type in the world. 5 in the over world (zombie, skeleton, creeper, spider, slime), 5 in the Nether (pigman, magma slime, blaze, wither skeleton, and ghast), and 1 in the End (the mod will basically change ). In this mini-biome, a structure will be built that has adventure map-like elements to it. There's a definite path to take in each structure that will reveal my own ideas about how monsters could have come to exist.
Currently these ideas split down into different paths, which will result in two parallel but separate mods to be released. The first will be called ORIGINS and it is a direct "prequel" to the vanilla Minecraft game. With the mod installed, villages will be far more frequent, villagers will have skins similar to Steve, and no monsters will spawn to begin with. It's the player's job to explore the world and find each mini-biome. Not only will each area be free to explore at any point in the game (nether and end restricted to the obvious constraints), but there will be a way to "beat" each area. Doing so will reveal the origin of the area's monster, and then that monster will begin to spawn in high frequency in the world. Once every monster has been unleashed (including nether mobs and endermen), a secret location will be revealed that will tie in the mod's in-game lore to the vanilla game.
There's a teaser trailer for ORIGINS here! I made this all myself:
The second mod, which has to be named, will be a slightly tweaked version of this mod. I won't go into detail about its lore, as it will slightly contain spoilers from the end-game reveal in ORIGINS, but I will explain the differences in mechanics. When the player spawns, it will be dictated to them that their purpose on this world is to rid the land of evil. Villages and villagers spawn as normal, as well as monsters in the darkness. Each mini-biome will have an almost-identical path to take, however at each "complete" the player will be presented with a choice. Either A: remove the ability for the monster-type to spawn in the world (there will be a unique way for every monster) or B: to increase the spawn rate of the monster. Once every mini-biome has been explored, the player will be directed to a special area to show the outcome of their choices.

You don't need more pickaxes, but you're getting them anyways.
