Rivers are widened by tributaries and their maximum width is a function of their maximum length. Right now I'm using an 8-chunk radius for generation which makes for good performance but rather short rivers; I might increase the default to 16. There will be a config parameter to further increase this if your machine is OK with the extra load.
Ok, sweet, im just really disappointed with the width of the rivers in Vanilla... i use Archimedes Ship Mod, and i want to be able to bring my ships inland damnit!

It's not a perfect fix, but if you are using 1.8, you can go to customized world gen and move the little river size slider up. The maximum setting makes some pretty decent rivers in vanilla.
For the flowing rivers, do you have any plans for magma rivers in caves and the nether?

just to let you know that the alpha release has been delayed a bit, to sometime before Christmas. It will likely be for 1.7.10, with the 1.8.x versions coming later. And yes, there will be rivers of lava in the Nether.
Now, a feature request (:-). When two streams merge, can the downstream section be made bigger -- as in the combined size of the two source streams? Yes, I'm expecting that this means very large/wide/deep rivers when it hits the ocean.
Will you be able to work with an ATG world? The rivers that ATG generate need some love.
(In regard to a mod that gives realistic animal genetics):
Would you really rather have bees that make diamonds and oil with magical genetic blocks?
... did I really ask that?

Hello Keybounce, right now if two streams of the size width merge together then this results in a wider river. This doesn't happen if say, a 2-block wide stream flows into a 6-block wide river. Getting nice wide rivers is a bit tricky right now as it involves reserving large swaths of terrain for generating each river piece which limits the length and meanderings of the resulting network. The rivers in the first release will probably be rather narrow, but this will improve.
I took a look at Alternate Terrain Generation, it's beautiful. I hope it can be supported; some custom terrain generators will work out of the box but others such as TFC need some customizing on my end. I might support TFC on initial release, and then I'll look at others like ATG.
Also I'm once again late on my release schedule. :-( This is my bad, I got tangled up in refactorings trying to minimize the problems of overlapping river systems generating on top of each other. For technical reasons it's not possible to have structures that know about the terrain elevations and also recursively about other structures of the same type. So I'm going to try and wrap this up quicker so we can have something to work and play with, even if it doesn't look super nice. Stay tuned for updates!
So around 1 minute, I see two 5-wide streams merging, into a 5-wide stream. They're tiny. They don't even have depth, and you can't boat them (as you discovered).
At 1:20, you come to an "end" -- and as the river flows into the ocean, there's an underwater stone wall. Shouldn't that be not there? Erosion and everything.
What do you do if a river reaches a savannah/plains/desert that doesn't empty into the ocean? Do you make a large lake? Or do you only work backwards from the oceans to place these?

Hi, I looked back at the video and those merging streams are actually 4- and 6-wide, so there's no widening. Still, it would feel more natural for the resulting river to be larger so I might set it to widen if neither stream is the double of the other. It's easy to implement, the difficult part is to support large maximum widths.
As for erosion, all waterfalls have a stone edge because it looks really weird for a deep V-shaped river, or a sandy-bottomed river, to form a waterfall. But there shouldn't be any falls this close to the ocean, the layout will be different in the first release.
Lastly, rivers are indeed generated backwards from oceans or large bodies of water, so they're guaranteed to terminate properly.
Edit: to respond to Mrkayjay09: I'll leave other boat types to other modders, as boats are complex enough as is. They're infamous for brittleness in calm, deep water and the problem is compounded in currents. I had to modify the boat objects so that they're actually repelled by river banks and stand a better chance of survival than they did in my intro video. Even then, they'll run into trouble around waterfalls sometimes. Rafting ain't easy.
Feature request for streams: Control over which dimensions you are active in. Either by dimension number, or chunk provider class, or the world type string.
Bonus points if you can control the river material based on something. For example, lava rivers in "ChunkProviderHell", or saying "I have found a large body of liquid, I'll use this liquid as my river material" instead of only water or lava. Err, not that I might have an ocean of black ink, or something ...

Liquid gold rivers.
You know you want to.

no 1.8 Forge yet, so no mods for 1.8...
Yeah, i know. I think I read your earlier post as "want larger rivers in vanilla, regardless of mods"..
EDIT: and Archimedes Ship MOD is a mod... um.. I'm having trouble thinking today

Can you generate in mystcraft ages? Ages don't have normal "rivers" -- the river biome basically turns into shallow oceans with no islands.
