I'm working on a mod called Streams to bring flowing rivers, with a true current, to Minecraft. This has been a popular suggestion ever since the flat, static rivers were first added. I posted pictures of my progress on a Reddit thread, and now I'm creating this WIP thread so we can keep the discussion going until the first release.

Release plans:
The first alpha will be released before the end of January.
Meanwhile, have a look at the preview album here; I will update it periodically. Let me know what you think!

Thanks! The water blocks have a fixed current but they don't move or spread unless you remove a neighbor block. However, pre-generating chunks where rivers will flow does slow chunk loading down so there could be some lag there. I'm trying to optimize to reduce this problem.
Thanks! It will be for whichever version of Forge is current when I release, around mid-November. I originally assumed it would be 1.8, but given cpw's recent departure from Forge it's possible that we'll still be at 1.7.10.
In this mod, will the now flowing water blocks still be source blocks?
Yes, you can fill a bucket from them and they'll be replaced by their neighbor blocks. The water in the bucket won't have the magical fixed flow however, it will just be normal water.

That is very awesome and come to think of it, very much expected. Just like when you fill a bucket at a stream. The water in your bucket is no longer flowing.
are you going to make the magic water a new block? if so, then there might be some compatability issues with some mods. One mod that (I use in particular) might cause a problem is Eniromine. It would make it impossible to drink from the water as it flows, but, if you don't make it into a new block, that would just be awesome!
And, do stagnant pools of water generate? and if you dig out a channel for them, does the water begin to flow like a river? or does it act like normal water?
And if you make a channel of water, will it be still, or will it turn into flowing water?

River blocks are different from normal water blocks because they have a fixed current. A mod that checks for water as a block material should be able to interact with them; a mod that checks for specific water blocks (flowing or still) will not.
Non-river water works the same as before (decays to nothing over 7 tiles). If you dig out a block from a river bank, you'll get river water if it has 2 river neighbors, and its current will be an average of its neighbors. If your dug-out block has a single river neighbor, normal water will fill it instead.

so, river water acts like regular water, as in if there are 2 source blocks on a diagonal, they will flow together and make another river sorce? or- will two source blocks next to eachother (touching) flow out into two empty spaces and make two more source blocks of river water, or will it be vanilla flow?

River blocks check their four neighbors in cardinal directions (N, S, E, W). So the diagonal river blocks will make a new river block at their intersection. In the other scenario, if each block is the only cardinal neighbor of the newly-emptied spaces, they will fill with regular water.
This is somewhat similar to how vanilla source and flowing blocks get created from their neighbors (two source neighbors gives you a source, otherwise you get a flowing block).
it seems that you like every post that says good things about your mod or you, but remember that the constructive criticism is what helps the most.
It's true that recently I've been liking every post as a way of saying thanks, but looking back at my other mod thread I see that the more critical posts are from before I started doing that. It's a coincidence but I can see how it would send the wrong message... thanks for letting me know about this. Constructive criticism is very appreciated and drives the mods forward.
EDIT: The mod is now released! Visit http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/mapping-and-modding/minecraft-mods/2346379-streams-real-flowing-rivers and give it a try! :-)

I'm afraid not, the differences between 1.6 and 1.7 and too great to consider a backport.
